Jeff Jones, the Gophers’ most highly touted recruit of the past decade, is transferring to Iowa Western Community College after falling behind academically this semester, coach Tracy Claeys told the Star Tribune on Wednesday.

“He and I talked, and I think it’s a good decision,” Claeys said.

Claeys said Jones is working through the paperwork of the transfer but plans to enroll at the junior college in January. Jones will be able to go through spring practice with the Reivers and play next fall.

Once he earns his two-year degree, he’ll be eligible to transfer back to a Division-I school.

“He’s a great kid — a great kid,” Claeys said. “He’s more than welcome to come back. He just had a tough semester academically, and it really wasn’t until this semester.”

Would that mean he'd have only one year of eligibility remaining?

Not good.

Sadly, this news is not surprising to me. Good luck to Jeff, wherever he may end up.

Our track record with highly-touted local recruits continues to amaze.

Good luck Jeff. I will never have anything bad to say about an in-state kid who could have gone to a helmet school of his choosing but chose to represent his home state university. I still remember him saying something along the lines of "it wouldn't have felt right to have the word Michigan across my chest being from Minnesota and not having those letters across my chest."

Let the meltdown commence!

It is disappointing but not terribly shocking news. He had academic issues from day 1. Tough when the most prized recruit from a class doesn't pan out though. Hopefully he gets things sorted out down in Iowa, chances are we will never see him in the maroon and gold but you never know.

More proof that if you are a 4 star and you commit to Minnesota, you will fail miserably.

this. thought exactly this.

just unreal.

someone needs to put nasa on suicide watch. dude blamed jones' lack of carries forever and thought he was literally going to be a heisman candidate

next rb turned wr turned db up!

Good luck to Jeff Jones at Iowa Western Community college. Hopefully his chance to play and being out of the spotlight will give him the opportunity to get back to the D1 level of football and get his grades and academic progress back on track. This is probably besides the concussion and migraine issues a reason he didn't play much. That and being passed on the depth chart by the other two guys that started.

How are his academics our problem. We provide the opportunities the player still has to do the work and if they don't it's not our fault but that of the players. I wouldn't exactly put this on UofM shoulders

uhh, dude, where did he put this on the u of m? no where, that's where. all he said is our track record with highly touted local recruits amazes him. most haven't panned out.

Don't tell Nasa that Joey King leads the basketball team in scoring either

we just aren't allowed to have nice things.

The situation isn't great, but with the number of recruits we have gotten from Iowa Western, I'm glad JJ is going there. Hopefully he can get his grades in order and come back.

No secret why. It's because we get the high-risk ones.

Helmet schools can afford to pass on those.

Yep. Same goes for hoops during the Tubby era and getting guys like Royce White. Not to be pessimistic but thats a big reason why we got Seth and Dredrick too. Big time programs can afford to pass on those types of talents, we can't.

Helmet schools take plenty of high risk ones, it's just that a four star recruit that doesn't make it there is just another recruit.

Not surprising academics were a problem based on his enrollment issues.

I think Seth and snelson have options.

Called it. Injuries were never the issue. Grades and better players ahead of him.

Best of luck to Jeff. Hopefully he can get his grades in line and at a minimum persevere to earn his college degree. Even if he never plays FBS football again, would love to see him graduate from college regardless. Best of luck Jeff and know you will always be a part of the Gopher sports family no matter where life ends up taking you. Ski-U-Mah!
