Jeff Goodman: "I think Tubby Smith is gonna be Gone"

We finished as the 9th seed in the conference. Why beat this to death? I know you like to "keep it real" Dpoll, but sometimes it can go on too long.

Dpo needs at least one long winded argument per week or he gets constipated.

I'm with him 100%.

Some people want to say they finished 9th to add another nail to Tubby's coffin. What I've been saying, along with Dpo is that you can have your opinion on what the future should be for Tubby, but the immutable fact is they finished tied for 7th in the conference and were the 9th seed in the B10 tourney.

Period.

Yep. And that sucks. Tubby has been the one pounding nails. Failing to land a decent point guard who could stay eligible or on the team are exhibits 1, 1A, 1B and 1C-1Z. We are just pointing it out. Don't kill the messenger(s). :)

HEY! Maybe next year we will tie for 12th place with 6 other teams, get the #7 seed and we can reverse this!!!!

And very few disagree with that.

no matter how much some of you want to bash him. The facts are that he's gotten you to the NCAA tournament 3 out of 6 years. The ONLY TIME IT'S BEEN DONE IN THE HISTORY OF YOUR PROGRAM WAS WHEN YOU CHEATED!!!!! I would say Tubby has by far exceeded expectations but you idiots can't appreciate building your program up. Yes it could go higher but Tubby has certainly elevated the program. You'd be an idiot not to recongnize that.

I think an idiot is someone who posts on message boards of teams he/she is not interested in. I think a bigger idiot is one who does such a thing under the moniker nota___fan, advertising his/her lack of allegiance.

Further, I think idiots simplify things in ways that are nearly irrelevant. There are 68 teams in the field now. There have only been 64 since 1985, so when talking history of the program, you are really only comparing Tubby to Clem and Dan Monson when using this factoid. Even before the cheating, Clem had far more tournament success than Tubby. And there is a chance even Monson would have had three trips to the tourney if there were 68 teams ten years ago (02, 03, 05).

The point is their success hasn't been all that different and can be looked at in many different ways. A Gopher fan that follows the program understands the big picture and can see beyond one simple bit of trivia. Tubby has not delivered what he was hired to deliver. I am positive even he would agree with that.

Gopher fans don't need lectures from people named notagopherfan. I don't even know why you'd care. You almost have to be related to Tubby. If not, I can't imagine a bigger waste of one's time than your time on here.

Everyone that defends Tubby is either Saul or they're "settling for mediocrity."

It's not over for Tubby here, but if this year is it, then I will look at his tenure here as a missed opportunity. We brought in Tubby to bring things to a whole different level and he had the name recognition, history and credibility to do so. It appears to me that through a combination of stubborness, poor communication and lack of passion that he failed to do what he could have done here. Has he improved our standing as a basketball program? At the very surface- yes he has in terms of getting into the NCAAs. However, if you look deeper (again if this is the end) he has actually hurt the program somewhat. Here is this great HOF coach who could not win at Minnesota (this ain't winning). That leaves the stigma on the program that "Tubby Smith couldn't even win there" -so it's not a place you can win at from a national viewpoint. That's a shame, because a fully engaged Tubby Smith could have won here.

Is that a Tubby problem, or an administration problem? I'll keep saying it a university who will build a women's ice rink and a rowing facility before taking care of the football and men's basketball teams has some serious issues at the top

There certainly are administrative issues as well. Or were at least.

Are we playing in a play in game tonight? I had no idea we were one of the last 4 teams in and wouldn't have made the tournament this year had the tournament not been expanded to 68 teams!!!

Good reading! The point is that "history" here is irrelevant because it is ever changing, and it is easier to get in now. I was addressing his defense. That's it. I was giving it context. We could have potentially been saying the same thing about Monson. It wouldn't have made him a success here. But thanks for picking one thing out of that and being sarcastic.

I should be clear, I'm not talking about Norwood I feel that the powers that be that Kaler and Teague have to answer too are behind in the times and don't understand the importance of winning revenue sports. After all this a school that wanted to get rid of it's football program in the 50's when the gophers were still a respected football power. The practice facility should be done, shouldn't be too hard to raise 15 million in a metropolitan area with this many fortune 500 companies and alumni.

To be fair, in some ways it is easier, but in others it's not. Clem was fortunate to coach when the Big Ten was very weak in the mid 90's. Despite that, Clem's first 6 seasons with his own recruits we had 2 NCAA appearances and 1 NCAA Tournament win. I was at a lot of games in the mid 90's and many of the same people who are complaining about Tubby now were complaining about Clem back then. If Clem's Gophers hadn't won that overtime game against UTEP in 1990, his legacy would be totally different.

I have no problem if they get rid of Tubby after this year, but it should have been a decision that was made after the year. "Fans" of the Gophers have made this situation toxic, to the point that a change might have to be made. And quite honestly, I think it has effected the teams play. It's part of being a Minnesotan for some people I guess.
