JD Pride follows family tradition, and commits to the Gophers

I dunno. How many current Gophers under 200 pounds can bench 275?

Serious question.

Can Eric Decker run a 4.52? I bet not. A legit 4.52 puts him top ten on the Gophers.
If the numbers are real, they are pretty good.

kid ran an electronically timed 4.7

Difference here, is the kids you are hearing about on TV etc etc were highly recruited athletes we failed to keep instate. Binns (Iowa), Anderson(WI), Gilreath(WI), Eubanks(IOWA), and even Klug(IOWA) were all considered very, very nice players while they were being recruited. Pride reminds me a lot of Nance who has transferred to St. Thomas. Was a great athlete in high school but he won't translate to Division one very well. However, it is always nice to have good student athletes joining the mix as he seems like a very nice young man.

Thankfully, Brewster has been keeping a lot of our talent in state in recent years.

Anyone see Mr. Anderson's performance today at the shoe? Oops... Lots of big drops

A 4.7 indicates hand timed and a 4.52 indicates electronically timed. Rivals is reporting the 4.52, so I'm going with that until there's another electronically timed score.

I'm totally for giving JD a chance but the argument that Decker, Barber etc weren't sought after recruits so we should take him doesn't really hold water.

No one is saying that because he isn't a sought after recruit that we shouldn't take him. People are just saying that his not being a sought after recruit doesn't necessarily mean we shouldn't take him.

I rarely see his name in the stats for Grace. The article says he's a junior. That's wrong, I assume.

By the way, I'll take him over Weber right now, sight unseen

Check the link, look at QB 40 times. These are official numbers and electronically timed, Kid ran a 4.77 which is about equivalent to a 4.62 hand timed. Believe what you want but that is not a good time for a DB recruit without great size.

I can't believe you guys are actually Minnesotans and gopher fans. I'm incredibly embarassed to be associated with you guys right now.

What a bunch of *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#ed up *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#.

go suck yourselves.

What's Wrong w/ you?

I know I'm a terrible person for saying this about a local kid who seems like a nice enough guy, but the scholarship should have been used elsewhere. Pride isn't a BCS athlete, I'm not even sure he's a D1 athlete. I remember him saying a while back that he wants to play quarterback in college, he couldn't even get the starting spot at Cretin. He weighs 190 pounds, runs a 4.52, and his max bench is 275. You want to tell me where exactly we need that?

I know it's harsh, but this is nepotism at its worst. I could care less if his relatives were good players.

That said, if he gets Seantrel, by all means.;)

Why would you say anything like this? People like you are the people that make our program crap. This kid is 18, and you're throwing him under the bus? What gives? Get off this website!

4.7 is recognized everywhere as a handheld time. 4.77 is recognized as electronically timed. You can tell them apart because the electronically timed event has the extra decimal place. You also didn't give any reference or link to where the 4.7 time came from, so as far as I knew it was hearsay, especially when you said a 4.7 was electronically timed.

Because I want the Gophers to give scholarships to kids that are more likely to make an impact I make our program crap? Go on...

As for this website..I was asked to do recruiting work for it..what exactly gives you any authority to make such determinations as to who should speak and who shouldn't?

This program is "crap" because we don't win enough games. Comments made on a message board have nothing to do with it.

It's ridiculous the degree to which people are unable to say anything even remotely against the standard line without being attacked on here. Someone mentioned John Nance earlier. That is exactly who I was thinking of, except Pride shows even less promise.

You're a complete prick. This is the worst excuse I've ever seen from somebody pretending to be a fan of this team. There is only one appropriate response to this post and that is welcome to the gophers.

Go look in the mirror and when you see a great big ugly puss of a face looking back at you do us all a favor and punch it as hard as you can.

You are a D-Bag.

I like how you responded to my post with a well thought out explanation of your points. I'm very hurt by you calling me names over the internet. Well done.

I'm not making excuses. We shouldn't give people scholarships because of anything other than their ability to produce for the team. i could care less if that bothers some of you.

My point is he's made a commitment to the gophers after being invited to join. You are pissing on him and the coaching staff who chose to invite him. I've never seen such poor behavior in the name of being a fan. You couldn't suck anymore as a fan than you do right now.

You can be a dick all you want, I can't stop you. But just because you insist on being one doesn't mean you're not. You are. There is only one out, an apology to the kid, and a meaningful one at that.

You could care less? Then why don't you?

You're an effing professor. At my effing school. It's COULDN'T care less.

Jeebus....

Right.

JD was very smart to take the scholarship. He wasn't going to get one from anyone else and he probably should have taken it immediately when it was offered. Thankfully it was still there when nobody else wanted him. The fact that he tried to sell himself to anyone that would listen and couldn't get a single offer from anyone else probably gave him a hint. Good for him for capitalizing on it before it was too late.

I've never quite understood why being a fan meant never questioning anything. I never will. If that makes me a dick, super. Again, I come on here to talk rational objective analysis concerning the team, not support every decision that's made in the sake of blind loyalty. Some people agree with me, those that don't find the need to rail out.

Does this lack of criticism apply to everyone? Because oddly enough people find a lot of time to bitch about almost everything concerning the program on here. Maybe we should only make posts about how awesome everything is going.

Make your own thread. this is his welcoming thread. Much like a grad party or a wedding reception. There are thoughts you should keep to yourself at those events just as in this thread. And you should do it in a timely manner apart from this event, and preferably in more general terms.

This is a welcome thread. He's ours. He deserves a warm welcome as a future gopher regardless of what you think of him or his abilities. You on the other hand deserve something entirely different.

I think some of y'all could stand to switch to decaf.

The internet is so serious.

This is sober and uncaffinated. Believe it or not. I just take great offense when adults attack kids in a public forum, especially when we should be welcoming them and posturing ourselves as a part of his new community. I'm pretty sure we just became the enemy to him and his family thanks to a couple of shortsighted and inconsiderate few.

I doubt we became the enemy to this kid and his family because one guy in a generally positive thread they'll almost certainly never read thinks he may not be the best use of a scholarship. Even if he did see it I think he realizes that fair or no part of being an athlete at a BCS school is subjecting yourself to scrutiny. I'm sure he'll just brush it off or use it as motivation, but I can't see a few words written by a faceless person on the internet turning him on the program or its fans.

e: I don't mean to come off as condescending, I'm just saying it's probably not a big deal. :)

The thread was not that positive. And it wasn't just the prof, I'm mostly dissapointed in him as he was most vocal and I thought he would show more class than that, and some of the others have no credibility anyway. I'm very happy to have Mr. Pride. I knew we couldn't grab more than a couple more Minn kids because of impending numbers, but he was one I hoped we would get. He makes the program better even if he never takes a snap as a QB or finds the field in a game. We're lucky to have him.

You can bet, because the kid knew he had been interviewed he came to see how it turned out. I only hope he didn't read the crap in this thread.

Plain and simple, kid is going to be a leader for this program. He may be a superstar, he may not. But his work ethic, from my understanding, is second to none. If his biggest contribution is on scout team or in the weightroom as a spotter, so be it. We need more guys like JD Pride in this program.

Sometimes, guys, it's more about leaders than athletes. I'd much rather have a developmental leader who's a two star than a selfish, me-only three star.

Prof, you started off with a bunch of good recruiting info, then have been kind of a pessimist ever since, what gives??? Recruits and players read this stuff, I'm sure we all realize this, so when people write the kind of stuff they do on there it tells me they aren't really behind the program, because in reality you are sabotaging it with your comments and who they are reaching. I know you like the Gophs, so I'm not calling you out.....

Now back to the thread. I think it is great to take chances on guys like JD. Playing for the U goes beyond the field for him, we will get something extra out of him, the kind of play you see out of the 2*s that Iowa takes and who give the Hawks a greater sense of pride and will (that definitely shows up on the field). It wouldn't surprise me one bit if JD turns himself into a nice DB after 3 years of hard work in the program. It helps he comes from a football family, football IQ can decrease about .5 from you're 40 time. Think about all the walk-on safeties that have contributed for the Badgers recently, just sconny kids that play like they are possessed because they got the chance to wear the red (I can think of one that scored a TD for Wisco yesterday, and one thats in the NFL right now).

Who would have thought J.D prides' recruitment threat would be almost 60 posts long.....:D

how is 6'1 190 not good size for a DB? that is better size than every safety we have on the roster.
