I think we would all love to have him as a 25 minute 6th man type, or if we didn't have Garcia- he'd be a nice 4 man along side of Payne. He doesn't fit otherwise. I think Battle wants to put up numbers and he needs to be paired with the right guards to do so.

Why would we want to repeat last year where he chucked up forced shots and had the worst efficiency among our top 7 players? Worse than the freshmen- Henley and Carrington. He shot tons of 3s at the 31 percent clip and didn't help the other players get better.

I agree.. any you can have both these opinions at the same time..

Fuck him.. he wants out.. anyway he can.. that's fine... But you can't disagree with the stats and facts right out in front of you.. Ben's 1st year here Battle was better but he had much better guard play.. Battle is a SOLID player with a team that is built properly around him

If you actually read the post instead of immediately jumping at another lame attempt to attack me (I don't know why you keep trying; you always fail), you'll see that I acknowledged his greatness and that he led that team to great moments. The NBA finals appearance was 6 years before the trade. At that point, he no longer wanted to play for the team. They traded him midseason and they were a better team for the rest of the season (due in no small part of Andre Miller) than they were before the trade.

Maybe, but he doesn't want to play here any longer and I can understand if Johnson doesn't want to build a team around him. Garcia performed head and shoulders above Battle this year (19.3 player efficiency rating and 53.4% True Shooting percentage vs. Battle's 9.4 and 47.3%) and Payne might be an emerging star. Battle wasn't even close to "average" this year let alone "good."

Battle and last year’s team were both better without Garcia. Were the Gophers a better team this year with Garcia? Garcia has better individual stats, but it’s a team game. Nebraska had a guy (maybe not for the first time) a couple years ago who had all kinds of offensive stats, but they never won. Just throwing it out there that Garcia has had this better-without-him thing going at his previous stop.

True. He started his head coaching at an NAIA school, moved to a D2 school, then moved to NDSU which was D2 at the time but he led them when they first moved to D1.

He is not a player you build around. He adds value as a good shooter with the right players around him, where he doesn't have to create his own shot - catch and shoot; one to two dribbles and a shot. He needs to accept this role. He is a liability defensively no matter who is around him.

The basis for your inference about Garcia could just as easily be said about Payne or Cooper. I don't know why people insist on blaming others for Battle's problems this season. He just wasn't good this past season. End of story. Why waste time trying to rationalize a poor performance by a player who has made it clear that he no longer wants to play here?

Not sure if both went to Cooper or Armstrong or those feeder programs at the same time, but assume so since they were in the same district.

They didn't play Battle's natural position, however.

I'm not really trying to defend Battle in this line of discussion. My point is to remind people that it's the team that matters, not the individual statistics. I really never cared what numbers Garcia, or the freshmen, were putting up - the team sucked in both offensive and defensive efficiency. In my mind, the talent is less important than having 5 guys who actually play really well together. That's super-unpopular. Most think talent accumulation is the only thing. It's not unimportant, but they won't succeed as 5 individuals.

In my opinion, this has nothing to do with Garcia.

Battle was better without Garcia because he got to play more minutes at the 4.
The team last year was better because we had guards. Like people who could actually play guard - Willis, Loewe, Stephens, and Sutherlin.

I think Garcia started the year struggling a bit but IMO he had a good season. The team around him was so awful that it's a bit lost, but he shot the ball well, I thought he battled on defense (he wasn't great), and he was a good facilitator.

Garcia is a pretty good basketball player.

They were a better team over a longer period of time with AI than without. They traded him when injuries and age started taking a toll, just like any other NBA superstar.

The bolded sentence was never something I contested. This is one of the primary reasons I don't like you: you're a dishonest asshole.

Were you following and watching them closely at the time? I'm from Pennsylvania, grew up a Sixers fan, continued following them throughout life. He wanted to be traded. They did not perform well in the year and a half before he was traded, he was done with the team, and management wanted to move on from him.
 

It would be a douche move to go to Indiana but you can't fault the guy for wanting to play his last year in a competent system. That and the game day atmosphere at Assembly Hall is a definite upgrade.

Garcia was far more efficient than Battle and better in every single statistical area except FT%. Battle was better by 78% to 71% but even there Garcia got to the line 3 times as often as Battle. It's just no contest between the two players- Garcia is much better and much tougher to defend.

that and maybe he believes Woodson, with his NBA pedigree and connections, can help him prepare for a basketball career after college (whether Europe / Asia / G-league, or the extreme long-shot NBA)

Yes, but roster bio says he grew up in Robbinsdale (Cooper and Armstrong are the district high schools). So they easily could’ve played youth or in feeder programs with or against each other, in that area, before he went into the Catholic system.
