Jack Wilson commits

The Gophers need some muscle inside and hope Wilson can provide that. TT is a 7’ perimeter player, not someone effective inside. I’ll take he muscle for this team. 10-15 minutes per game, 4 pts, 4 rebounds, 5 fouls.
He has gone through 4 fouls in 6 minutes in one game and 4 in 8 minutes in another and did 4 in 10. No 5 in 10 that I can find.

When he was in Idaho, if he played 10 minutes in a game, it would cost the team around 5 points. The team was that much worse with him on the court. I'm sure he'll get better in the Big 10 after 2 years of playing football and working at GNC.

Avoids one or two fouls on Payne while he gets needed rest and stops a few guys driving to the lane for lay ups. Erases a couple more lay ups when guys just decide not to go there.
See, i think the idea is to defend WITHOUT fouling. Silly me.

"Give 5 fouls in 10 minutes" does nothing positive. Nothing. It just means lots and lots of free throws for the other guys. It's an idiotic thing to list as a positive.

Its the kind of moronic stretch people resort to when they put themselves in the position of defending the indefensible.

No, not silly, just not deep.

We have one good defensive post player. He can't play 40 minutes. The nature of interior defense is a lot of fouls are called. That's aside from the fact the guy who plays the hardest and most aggressively needs a rest, even if he's not in foul trouble.

So if he averages 25 minutes a game, then what? My guess is at least 10 of those minutes are played by guy's not suited well for post defense. Fox is first if he is able. After that we're looking at giving up a lot of layups and putbacks.

For a few minutes a half they might use Wilson. He is bulky and strong so he can protect the space around the basket. Doubt if he's quick or a leaper so he is going to foul. In that case, his job is to keep them from scoring layups. If he takes a foul the guy driving the lane should feel it. Maybe he'll hold back next time.

Wilson was a horrible defensive post player in the Big Sky. He didn't fix that problem.

How are there Jack Wilson defensive stat specialists on this board? How much Jack Wilson game film and advanced stats have you sucked in? I looked him up and I can see that he averaged a little over 3 boards in 15 minutes a game the one year he go significant minutes (18 games) - almost 4 years ago.

Let's agree that he is a huge guy with pretty good athleticism who hasn't put that much emphasis on basketball. He's a wild card bench player. I'll wait and see. He might be fun!

Because it's really easy information to find (basketball reference or sports reference). His advanced stats are available with one click of a button. I've soaked them all in, it took 2 minutes.

He had a negative win/share (which is terrible)
He had a BPM of -13 (which is horrific)
He was a worse rebounder than Thompson by quite a bit.
The team was worse on the defensive end with him in the game.
He shot under 40 percent from the field (despite everything being near the basket).

I was not a Jack Wilson stat specialist before we signed him. I googled and was shocked we offered someone with such terrible stats. It took under 2 minutes.

Let’s wait until he gets on the floor. Enough negative stuff

Great. He's a huge athletic guy who hasn't concentrated on basketball. Scholarship #13 on the roster- not a huge risk in this transitory age. I would rather have him defending an opposing post than Thompson any day.

Yeah, at the end of the day it's just another year and another complete waste of a scholarship. In a vacuum, it's just 1 scholarship. In totality, it's about 25% of Ben's scholarships in his short tenure.

As far as preferring him over Thompson, that's fine to have that sort of leap of faith. So far, he's just been statistically way worse on defense than Thompson. Could that be a small sample size? Of course, it's possible. We'll see.

The bigger question is that if Ben survives this year and he wastes another scholarship next year, is that concern still going to be dismissed? This is the same crap people said about Ogele, Ramberg, Samuels, etc.

He doesn’t look athletic. I don’t know what screams athletic about him. He just look like a strong guy who can’t jump much.

I'm not the best at math, so can you help a guy out and explain how this one player counts as "about 25% of Ben's scholarships in his short tenure"?

Can't tell much from the clips but I thought he moves well for a guy of that size. He's not a complete stiff, I can see him helping out on defense in the middle against guys like Edey (if he comes back) or Crowl.

In basketball shape, say 280, he will be athletic enough to contribute. I wonder if he is aggressive enough. That will be coaching. We will need 10 minutes a game from him.

The fun factor is indeed possible. The terrible player factor is almost guaranteed.
