J.D. Spielman commits to Nebraska

Riley coached guys like James Rodgers. He does well with small fast guys who can get touches in multiple ways. In that way it is a good fit.
Brandin Cooks would be another good comp.

Do any of you remember the falling out between the two of them via twitter? I wonder if that played any role in his decision.

None. Carter sent tweets for him to commit ! When man heard he was going to Nebraska they offered the Marshall kid

What if Leidner tears his ACL in week 1?

I'd hope they go with one of the qbs they've been developing over true freshman at this stage

If croft plays things have gone south

I disagree. Read between the lines. Kill is toying with Strev at WR and it isn't because he is in love with Chris as a QB or because he is confident in Rhoda or 4th stringer Perra. By reading the practice reports and Kill's words - Demry is the real deal. For sure, no doubt, Plan A is ML7 followed by CS5, but if ML7 goes down early (i.e. ML7 tears an ACL in week 1 as asked here), Kill wouldn't hesitate to play Croft if he felt he gave us a better chance of winning then Strev - and I think reading between the lines you may already be able to see things starting to move in that direction. We have too much talent on this team to not play the best QB if that situation arises. Let's hope we don't have to find out.

it might have been only if Spielman didn't take it

Nope. DH had been sitting on his offer. It was all about getting clearance to play both FB and baseball. He committed as soon as he got the go ahead. JD should do pretty well in that system, but DH is much better in ours. I have hopes that JD will never beat a Gopher team. I have no doubt that Jerry would have taken both. They are different players. This class of Minnesota kids is pretty awesome.

Obviously injury changes, but I still believe croft won't be option #2 this year.

I don't think Croft is the #2 QB and I know the staff wants to RS him. I just think it is a different question if ML7 was injured week 1 vs week 10. I do think Croft may already be (or is close to being) the 2nd best option on this team.

I have no idea if Croft is ready for a backup role. If the coaches felt comfortable with the trio of Perra, Rhoda and Croft, I wish they'd tinker with Steveler at safety. Coach Claeys made mention that our team is thin at that spot. Streveler is fast and sure doesn't seem to shy away from contact. Wide receiver, wide reshmeever. :)

Croft being #2 reduces the size of the playbook which the staff has worked hard to expand. Talent wise it looks like he may be #2. He has only been around a couple of weeks. Only time will tell. Streveler is a competent backup for us but has too much talent to sit on the bench.
