It's Official: Central Michigan vs. Minnesota in Quick Lane Bowl

Don't have any ill will to the team for accepting since they were invited under the system and turning it down would be foolish from a financial standpoint, but if this is the way to qualify for bowl games in the B1G the athletic department needs to stop touting it as an accomplishment and selling point. No more "'X' consecutive bowl game appearances" as a way to show progress and success, it's not an accomplishment to be simply in a bowl game. Of course when the team has lost 7 bowl game appearances in a row marketing has to fall back on something.

After December 28th, we will have made 4 consecutive bowl game appearances. Which part of that statement is inaccurate?

I may have misread his post but I didn't see the part where he said any part of that statement is inaccurate. So why do you ask?

I can understand the "in my day" perspective, but I honestly like an additional 40 games. Better than talking with my family over the holidays.

And as for the "they used to mean something" comment: Can you really not differentiate in your mind the difference between the Cotton Bowl and the Quick Lane Bowl?

The ONLY good reason stated thus far for playing this game.

It's an accurate statement as a sterile fact, but the context has changed. Simply making it to a bowl game is not an accomplishment, it is not impressive, and it should not be used as an indication of the value of the product.

That's sad...and true I guess. I remember the days when there were only like 10-12 bowl games each year and it really meant something to be in one. Oh well....time to finalize our destruction of Western Michigan recruiting for 2016.

I am with you. Deep in my mind 'bowl team' still is an indication you are really good, but that's just not how it works anymore. Here are the realizations people like us need to accept.

- You don't have to be good to be a in a bowl.
- If we don't sell any tickets, that is more than ok because the TV revenue is where it's at.
- Having an in-tact coaching staff is not a requirement
- Location doesn't matter, just as long as get to go.
- Winning these lower-level games is great, but not a deal breaker.

If you can accept all this as today's reality, then our going becomes more palatable.

The Gophers earned this game, not by the traditional way (winning 6 games) but by winning 5 and being in the top 3 of APR of the 5 win teams.

Minnesota has a longer bowl game streak than Iowa, Ohio State, Purdue, Illinois, Indiana, Penn State, Maryland and Rutgers.

Any word on ticket sales gopher lady?

They earned it alright. This video of Illinois’ reaction to being left out and the U getting in is priceless.

I said it in another thread and I will say it here as well: If the coaches think the extra game and practices will help the program in any way, then they wouldn't be doing their job in my opinion if they turned the game down.

This doesn't change the fact that we went 5-7 in the regular season. It's not the team's fault there are so many bowl games. If you think it stinks that they get to play in this game, then don't watch it.

I'm going to be in Michigan during that time. If any buddies of mine want to go and if I can get free tickets I'll go.

Given the outrageous airfare from MSP to DTW, the price isn't bad for two people. But staying at the airport hotel is a bummer - you'd certainly have to find your own way back if you want to have some postgame fun.

There is a chance the winner of the NFC East will finish below .500. It is embarrassing that a mediocre team gets to go to the playoffs. I think the team should say no thanks and withdraw from the playoffs if this happens. If some people think the Gophers should not play a meaningless game because it is embarrassing, then they certainly think the same thing should happen in the NFL in a very meaningful game.

Simple solution for the people who are upset about 5-7 teams making bowl games. DON"T F’ING WATCH THEM!

Are there too many bowl games? Probably. But, my thirst for college football knows no bounds, so I can watch the Flavorite Spicy Ketchup Bowl with a clear conscious.

I happen to like bowl games. The way things are is simply the way things are right now. If they're gonna sponsor this many bowl games, my suggestion
to the NCAA would be to move up more teams into the FBS. I have no doubt that there is very little competitive difference, with a few extra schollies,
between the Sun Belt and MAC than with the CAA, Southland, or MVC (or even the Ivies, which iopt out of postseason play). If they did this, there would be
winning teams in almost all slots.

I can see both sides of the argument. I'm 60 years old. I can remember when there were just a handful of bowl games, and the "Big 4" on New Year's day were the Rose, Cotton, Sugar and Orange. Then, a couple of minor bowls like the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl. To make a bowl game, you pretty much had to win your conference, or be named "Notre Dame."

yes, going to a bowl game then was more prestigious, and making a bowl game was a huge accomplishment. But - at the same time - a lot of good (if not great) teams did not have the opportunity to play in a bowl game. The Gophers had several decent teams that couldn't go to bowls in that era.

I am fine with having more bowl games, and giving more teams the opportunity to enjoy the bowl game experience. Now, has the pendulum swung too far? probably. But, if sponsors are willing to shell out the money to have 40 bowl games, then they need 80 teams to fill out the bowls, and the Gophers qualified under the new rules.

I would never presume to tell a team they don't "deserve" to be in a bowl game, or call playing in a bowl game an "embarrassment." Time change - rules change. you can adapt, or you can complain. your choice.

Which channel will the game be on?

Good post. For me, the changing nature of bowl games is a lot like technology. I will piss and moan about new technology but will reluctantly go along with it because the alternative means living in a cave.
