It's Official: Central Michigan vs. Minnesota in Quick Lane Bowl

Doesn't get my chili even remotely hot, but hey, it's more football I guess.
Not worth wasting chili... I am making a vegetable stew, which is luke warm.

I see this as more of a reward than most of you. Sure, our play on the field was mediocre this year. But bowl games are going to take 5-7 teams some years, by virtue of there being 40 bowl games. The true reward for this game is in how the team is doing academically. By my count there were 14 5-7 teams this year, and we were tied for third on that list in APR. The team is being rewarded for their continued emphasis on maturity and priorities.

If I had told you 5 years ago that the Gophers would make a bowl game based on their character and scholarship would you have believed me?

If you want to support the program find a way to get to Detroit. Busses are an option.

Yes this season was disappointing, but was I the only one who watched the Iowa/Michigan State game and thought it was amazing that we put up more points at Iowa against Iowa than Michigan State did? We got a bowl game that allows us to practice another 6 weeks with coaches. That's all that matters. Get better, get ready for the off season, keep improving. I'm still all in for next year. We have the soft schedule next year that Iowa had this year. Pick yourselves up and realize there isn't that much distance between us and the top teams.

Smile. The unexpected Bowl game is good news. Unlike what will come out tomorrow...yikes!

I've had two road trips already this year, and I don't have the time off from work to spare, but have fun on the trip.

I'm having trouble with "walloped". Not so sure about "padded" either.

Was thinking the same thing. Definitely didn't wallop either of the MAC teams on our schedule but I don't know how anyone could say we padded our non-conf schedule either since it featured a top 5 (at the time) team and 3 other teams from smaller but respectable conferences. To me the non-conf schedule this past season was just about perfect, 1 tough opponent and 3 you should beat.

The problem I have with this game is that the Gophers are facing a Top 20 defense (according to BTN), the gophers have offensive issues, and defensive issues as well. Plus, the extra weeks still sound like it will not help when it comes to injuries. So, I just don't feel excited about the game itself.

Coach Claeys has said they'll likely have Myrick and Richardson back and possibly 2-3 others. Myrick and Richardson will go a long way towards solidifying the defense. If we can score on Iowa we can score on Central Michigan.

The big one being back would be Poock.

Was listening to Childers and Neuheisel this morning and calls out the playoff were coming in. Then some guy from Michigan calls and says that he is going to the Quick Lane Bowl. I was not sure that the hosts would have any interest, but Neuheisel knew who was playing and said that its a big game for the CMU QB and Claeys. He said it might give the Gophers some recruiting momentum. Anyway, we are where we are, so let's make the best of it. Go Gophers!

Excellent points - and we should be grateful the Gophers have a bowl bid and get the extra practice, TV time, etc.

Neuheisel was on the Dan Patrick Show this morning. He was complimentary of the Big Ten, noting how far the league has come in three years, while also noting how B1G and SEC money controls everything, saying "Nebraska and Minnesota, don't worry about getting to six wins because you get to go bowling, too."

My boys are young, and their only memories of Gopher football so far are that they go to a bowl game every year.

I'm happy this continues.

I like this.
My son was born in August 2012, so every year of his life the Gophers have gone bowling.
Gophers only went bowling twice in my childhood years, 1985/1999. deeeepressing

I really don't care either way but this just seems like another "participation" trophy. We didn't earn the right to go to a bowl game this year and I'm not sure what we learn from being rewarded for failure. Maybe the extra practices will help the younger guys. If I were the AD, I'd take a stand and so "no thanks" but it I am proud of the fact that our academics have improved dramatically. I'm actually more shocked that Nebraska accepted the bowl offer.

40 bowl games. 80 teams. The Gophers earned it.

We were selected for a bowl game by the selection procedures established, just like every other team in a bowl. We "earned" it just as much as any of them did.

That's sad...and true I guess. I remember the days when there were only like 10-12 bowl games each year and it really meant something to be in one. Oh well....time to finalize our destruction of Western Michigan recruiting for 2016.

By today's standards you would have had a few more bowl trips in there. In addition to 1985 and 86 you would also have gotten 1987, 1989, 1990, and maybe 1998 (below .500 but might have been needed) before Mason's run of bowls started in 1999. Nothing can really be done for the Wacker years though even with the number of games there are now those teams were not going to qualify.

I guess our definition of "earned" will have to differ. You can argue semantics all you like but this team didn't "earn" the right to play in a bowl game with their performance on the field this season. Injuries and Jerry's resignation certainly didn't help the cause but at least the kids knocked it out in the classroom.

It's not semantics. They earned it. Period. It's not as though they received some special exemption. They won 5 games and were selected the same as any other bowl team. You can feel free to think that there should be less bowls, but you don't get to make up your own definitions for words.

Of course the truth has always been needing 6 wins to qualify for bowl status in the past but exceptions were made this season to accommodate greed and the lack of qualifying teams. Feel free to continue feeling superior than anyone else with a different opinion than you though, champ.

I can understand the "in my day" perspective, but I honestly like an additional 40 games. Better than talking with my family over the holidays.

And as for the "they used to mean something" comment: Can you really not differentiate in your mind the difference between the Cotton Bowl and the Quick Lane Bowl?

You are entitled to your own opinions, but not entitled to your own facts. Your first sentence shows exactly how the Gophers earned a spot this season. It's not the Gophers fault that not enough teams qualified under the old rules.
