Inside Report

So, another completely unverifiable rumor. I heard from someone that his friend works security at the airport and saw Shaka Smart at MSP this morning. If true, doesn't necessarily mean that he's taking the job, just interviewing for it.

Shaka won't have to interview. He will be offered and he will take it or he will turn it down. IF and this a major IF he was in town it would have to be to take the job. The one thing to look for is denial. I don't believe he has come out yet and said he is not interested in the Minnesota job but I could have missed it.

But didn't Teague essentially deny that they already have their guy at the press conference today? Or was that just AD-speak?

My money was on that being a bluff. Who fires Tubby Smith without knowing who your replacement is? Especially Minnesota. This was a balsy enough move as it is. I don't think Norwood would do it if he didn't know the replacement.

I think it was AD speak. If he said today he had his guy, that would be distasteful to do the same day you can a head coach.
You need to make it seem like you just started the search today and are starting to make calls after you let coach go.
Looks bad if you're lining up a new coach and the current coach hasn't been told he's been let go yet.

I could see Joel Maturi doing something like this, but Im hoping Norwood is far more savy about this type of stuff.

Norwood said that he hasn't talked to anyone yet. Which means that Ellis could have done all the talking to Shaka and that Norwood's first discussion with Shaka about the position would come right after the press conference.

Nadine said that her source told her earlier this morning that the new coach had already gave verbal confirmation that they're coming, it's NOT Flip! Put two and two together people!

*Ellis & Teague both have strong ties to Smart and he's out of the tourney.
*They fired Tubby the day after the loss meaning they had to move fast to secure Smart
*Guaranteed Teague wouldn't have made this move unless it was for certain.
*My guy told me that it is 90% a done deal that he is our guy (again a FB donor) but very accurate. 8 of the 10% coming from not having the signed contract or details ironed out yet and he said 2% chance of cold feet on his end.

BOOK IT: We will be hearing that SHAKA (EFFING) SMART is our NEW B-Ball coach at the latest Wednesday at noon but I would bet by tomorrow afternoon.

Time to get Excited!!!!:cool::cool::cool:

Unless Teague is a dodo head. If it's Shaka, why wait to announce?

No doubt. Firing a future hall of fame coach as a 1st year AD would be a career death wish if it didn't work out.

Teague knows what's at stake.

Maybe all the specifics on the contract aren't figured out yet. Also, it might be out of respect for Tubby.

Agreed it would be very low to do it same day, today was Teague's day to explain reasoning and take questions.

MODS..,,anyway to combine and clean up all these threads?

It was mentioned before but there may be some University policies in regards to job openings they have to take into account as well. I am pretty sure at the U a job has to be posted for a certain number of days even if you already know who you are going to hire. It is a formality but it might delay an announcement even if a deal is in place already.

Also how is it there are still people who believe a word any AD or coach says during a coaching search? NT will be vauge and any coach that they are going after may deny their interest multiple times before the deal gets done. Just shocking to me that there are some that take what is said as fact when clearly we won't get 90% of the details and will just skim tidbits of info about the search off the top.

Most HR rules cover all jobs at the U of MN. But Athletics is given a lot of leeway (more than any other department) to make hires fast without the normal search requirements.

Interesting to see it from the other side of the fence. When all the dust settles one side is going to be disappointed when the Shaka rumors are put to rest. Here is the link to a VCU thread.

They seem to be pretty confident that Shaka isn't going anywhere this year. Good for them. Hope they don't take it too hard when he's standing next to Norwood tomorrow afternoon.
