Inside Report

If this story is true. Makes you wonder if this was possibly NT and Shaka's plan all along? Barring some huge Tubby run, he would bring Shaka here. Could this be why Shaka turned down those other jobs? Waiting for NT to call?

Keep dreaming. Shaka is deciding between UCLA and MN? His last name is Smart right? It is like Dr. Don giving the choice of 24 ounce prterhouse or Macrib. Which one do you think he will select?

One more thing, Shaka is a young Tubby. His style will not work in MN unless he has the right people that Tubby was never able to get and it was not because he was lazy. Also, the U does not have anough money to pay Shaka. He is in high demand now.

It doesnt take long to hire someone, look at how fast Tubby went from being at Kentucky to being a Gopher. No matter who the Gophers hire I think they will want to use the national media to its fullest. To do that you wait until Thursday afternoon announce the hiring at about 3:00 pm so along with the tournament talk during the Pre-Game for Thursdays games you get the talk about Minnesota hiring (Shaka Smart) hopefully.

Can only speak for myself, but giant hot dogs and a McRib is all I need.

Why do people keep saying that? His style of play is nothing like Tubby's. He plays a really fast paced, wide open style. It's much more similar to Billy Donovan than it is Tubby. Tubby had sets and ran a pretty big lineup. Tubby's teams would be better rebounders, Shaka's teams shoot a lot more threes, press a lot more, and play a much faster and looser offensive game. They shot almost 200 more 3's this year than the Gophs. They aren't a like.

Shaka to Minnesota

I have no idea if Shaka is considering Minnesota but I know why he would.
As a coach, more important than anything...practice facilities, money, location etc etc is who your boss is. How much do you trust that he/they have your back? How much do they believe in you? Are your requests for needs met with a "lets do it" or a "no"?
Do you either get or have the feeling you are being stabbed in the back here and there? Or are you supported and broadcast as the best coach ever. That kind of thing makes all the difference in the world to your success and peace of mind.

If Shaka had that relationship with Teague and his assistant AD's now here...then Shaka might be here too. One thing was obvious to me as stated in February...Tubby was gone in February and Shaka's original bosses are at Minnesota.

His style will not work in MN unless he has the right people that Tubby was never able to get and it was not because he was lazy.

Which is why Jirsa instead of Tubby was watching Tyus' games while Mike K and Izzo watched them directly

It isn't really that black and white. The expectations at UCLA are insanely high and it isn't really the most lucrative opportunity. I'm not even putting that job in the same room as Minnesota, but the decision isn't quite a no-brainer.

Boy, some people are taking this firing REALLY badly. Somebody is going to have an all-out temper tantrum here shortly...

Well Shaka would have had to have the gophs job in the bag before the Gophs lost to Fla. So if you source is right Tubby would have been canned even if we beat Florida... So the weasel Teague was hoping for the gophs to lose in order to make canning Tubby easier

Gross. It's absolutely necessary for an AD to have a contingent plan, especially in the type of collapse we were witnessing. He isn't a weasel, he was doing his job to plan on the contingency that things didn't turn out.

You better not wear a seat belt unless you plan on getting into an accident.

Good coaches are willing to change their style to fit the talent around them. Smart at VCU probably didnt have a ton of chances to recruit a bunch of big physical kids but had plenty of oppertunties to get athletic kids between 6'4" and 6'7" so his system used it. In Minnesota maybe we see less full court pressure and more use of big guys but who knows time will only tell.

The inside scoop at Gopherhole? It's been done before. Today, for example. jmag doesn't typically steer us wrong. Huge news, I'll bite! BOOM SHAKA LAKA!

Well aren't you an angry fellow now that Tubby has been fired. We've known all along that you were a Tubby over Gophers fan, but you bashing our program is just as bad as those bashing Tubby.

I agree, UCLA may be the most attractive job on paper, but you have no idea what factors are important to Mr. Smart. Maybe he prefers the midwest over LA? Maybe who his boss is is the most important thing to him? No one has any idea. People leave/take jobs for all kinds of reasons. College coaches are no different.

What is the common manta ... people dont leave jobs, they leave bosses. I assume you could turn that around to, people to take jobs, they take bosses.

I hate to be the one to say it, but even you guys here don't sound half as fired up by Shaka as you did 6 years ago when it was Tubby coming in. You really think Norwood and Shaka (now there's an odd couple) are the answer to your prayers?

Can we change this forum name to: "Boom-Shaka-Laka Basketball Forum" yet?

We are 6 years wiser and know not to get our hopes up over the possibility of success.

You hate to say that people aren't fired up about a hiring that hasn't even happened.

If Shaka Smart does not take the Gopher BB job, then hire Gregg Marshall from Wichita State!!

Is anyone else worried about some freak snow storm coming out of nowhere and delaying the arrival of Shaka to Minnesota...only to see him pick UCLA and then win 7 consecutive NCAA titles. would be great to see MN finally get the better of UCLA.

Would you take a job at PAC12 or B1G?

I had that same thought. The proverbial turning of the worm.

I think the response will be quite different when it has been officially confirmed

Thank you. Well stated.

I want to believe you but this kind of stuff (good news) doesn't happen in MN very often. Hopefully we can all pop some champagne in a few days.
I remember saying this exact thing when we heard Tubby was coming...hope this works out better.
