I wouldn't call myself a "loyal" listener...but over the last 10 years when I've been in the car between 9am and noon and in the mood for sports talk, I've turned to KFAN.

No more.

I tuned in at 9am yesterday hoping to get some focus on the victory over Indiana. The show kicked of with an expected 2-minute montage of Santana's "I'm Winning" with various bits of play-by-play from the Gopher and Wild games from the previous night.

Immediately after that, he mentioned that they would be talking both Gophers and Wild on the show today, but "...first, let's bring on Cory Chavous from DraftNasty.com!!"

Really? Arguably the biggest Gopher victory in 25 years and you kick off the show with a regular Corey Chavous bit? You can't push Corey back into the 2nd hour to devote a little time to the biggest story?

So I turned over to 1500 and was treated to the rest of my drive listening to passionate, intelligent analysis of the Gopher victory, how it happened and what it meant.

Goodbye, PA.

By comparison for the same station (KFAN), I turned on Barreiro at 3. First 45 MINUTES of his show were focused on the Gopher game. Great interview with Dakich.

PA is brutal and his knowledge of college basketball is embarrassing for a major market radio show host. He cares more about his schtick than anything else. I hope like heck that Judd and Dubay can grab some of his market share.

Was beating Indiana the other night really the biggest win in 25 years?

While I will agree that beating the Hoosiers was a nice win for MN and likely a season saver, but the Gophers were only 5 point underdogs playing at home.

A significant win, yes, but it wasn't exactly David vs. Goliath.

I would have to imagine there was a bigger win in 1996-1997 when the Gophers made the Final Four even though that season "never happened".

I did get to catch this - and was really impressed that they spent so much time on Gopher stuff. Took some callers, and really talked about the win, the implications, etc. I actually had finished driving and even used my I Heart Radio app from the car to my house so I wouldn't miss any of it!

It may be argued (used to qualify the statement of an opinion or belief): "she is arguably the greatest woman tennis player of all time".

Definitely not during the regular season. The conference was way down that year. The only team the Gophers played that ended up being in the final AP Top 25 was Illinois who were rated #19.

The win over UCLA to get to the Final 4 is the biggest win as far as I am concerned, but this one certainly ranks way up there.

PA has gotten worse and worse, now he thinks he is becoming a hockey expert. His gopher guest, Amelia is great in print, hard to listen to on the radio.

1500 needs a 7-9 show to crush those meat-heads on KFAN in the morning.

All games from that season are disqualified for the reason you stated (except remove the sarcastic "air quotes".)

She needs to be on video.

Content-wise, Judd & Dubay are kicking PA's butt. I don't even bother with KFAN in that slot, except sometimes when there's a guest host. Allen used to be entertaining and insightful when he had a co-host, but he's a complete and utter mess now. Virtually un-listenable.

Now that's spot on

it took me 3 days of listening to PA 10 years ago to have heard enough. He makes it all about him too much for me- cuz it should be all about me.

When PA has Nadine on she runs circles around Amelia with GL's ability to give a great interview and inject personality on the show.

I believe 1500 is contractually obligated to have Mike & Mike on per their agreement with ESPN. It really hurts them not having that local morning show.

You can't take PA seriously, it's all schitck and a 'Love Covenant' - which basically means he'll suck up to anyone and everyone he can to further ingratiate himself with anyone with even modest celebrity. I don't think PA could handle it if any one of importance actually told him that they didn't like him.

Be smart enough to not go there for Gopher coverage. If you want year around Vikes talk he can do that. I don't go to Dairy Queen when I want steak. Amelia really is a horrible interview. This Bigfoot crap...c'mon.

I should add. The first dagger was a few months ago when he asked Kevin Lynch what it was like to have Bobby Jackson running the point.

2 problems with that question...

Agree.

I dislike when a waitress calls me 'honey', I about throw-up when he calls his guests honey, including men... He even calls Chavous that. "Honey, listen... honey, here me out"

That's unfortunate if true.

Only "sort of". They were trying to go from "Talk Radio" to become a "Sports Talk" station after they acquired the Twins broadcast rights. The ESPN rights and all the programing that came with it, network shows, overnight programs, national baseball/basketball/football broadcasts etc. were a good trade-off for losing 2/3 hours in the morning. Wonder how much they're rethinking the strategy after losing the Twins?

Saw Nadine on Channel 11 (?) recently. She'll do fine if P.A. spirals so far out of control that he has to be replaced.

The only one I like on KFAN is Barriero. I get tired of some of his "schtick's" but I find his knowledge of most topics to be very good, he asks intelligent questions and is able to get great guests on. I also like when he steers OT a bit into non-sports items as they are usually topics I find interesting. That being said, the rest of the KFAN line-up is brutal and I can't listen to any of it.

On the flip side, I am really intrigued with what 1500 is trying to do. They are catering to the hard core sports fan with in-depth analysis, straight sports and no "schticks." Clearly they can't figure out their line-up and having hosts on different shows overlap for an hour here and there throughout the day takes away from continuity of the shows. So Pat is on with Garage Logic for an hour (Pat's first of the day) is he supposed to give all of his thoughts on the Gopher game and then do it again when he is joined by Phil an hour later? Makes no sense. I also find it interesting that 1500 is willing to invest in full time writers for their site (which they promote a TON on their station in attempt to drive traffic to the site). I like the extra coverage, but you can see that the articles don't generate much traffic so I wonder how sustainable that is to have a Vikes, Gophers, etc. writer.

All that being said, I am surprised that 1500 didn't try anything new in the market with their recent line-up change. While Dubay is an interesting story and a good addition back in the local lineup, I'm surprised that 1500 hasn't tried to add a former player/coach and pair him up with a professional journalist. Otherwise all we get is guys like Judd, Souhan, Reusse, Mackey, Dubay, etc. that are professional journalists and just sports fans. I LOVE when guys like Flip, Nanne, Mason, etc. are on extended amounts of time and talk about different sports outside of their specific area of expertise. I also really enjoy the national radio shows where guys like Rob Dibble, Rodney Harrison, etc. are talking about sports they didn't play, interviewing other athletes, etc.

So why not pair Judd up with a former Twin or Viking that live in town? There are plenty of them in town, retired players/coaches, some struggling to find a new career path. Mike Morris is the only one that they've tried that with and he was brutal. But I think the opportunity is there to create a personality like that on the radio that would differentiate the station than just a bunch of professional journalists.

Go Gophers!!

Pretty much agree Bleed but I can't stand Dubay. Happy for the guy to make a comeback but the guy is annoying as hell. Raspy voice, stutters, interrupts guests and co-hosts and arguing for the sake of arguing.

I miss having Reusse at noon. I know most people can't stand him and I often disagree with him, but at least he talks in an adult and normal voice, is well versed and has some historical perspective.

Dpo, you should like the historical perspective part.

Having said all that, I would have to guess there must be a market for Dubay's shtick or he wouldn't be on.

The amount of Packer love would be hard to take though.

I don't think Morris was that bad, he was just paired up with three idiots. When he and Rosen talked it was somewhat enjoyable. Ben Leber is pretty good overall, but awful on the morning show due to the other clowns.

Morris could have been their go to gophers football guy, but not only did not go to games he didn't even watch most of them & then tried to talk about the game with Justin Con-z-me-something.

PA is a total d-bag. Still likes chasing the ladies even though married with kids. Some pretty good stories about him and the Viking snowmobile gigs on Milacs. Total pig. I'm surprised Mrs. Allen hasn't dumped him. A total Viking whore.

Morris is a congenial guy and a good dude, but he was just an incessant babbling buffoon on the air.

I thought maybe there was no more Mrs. Allen....
