I'm done with PA

KFAN, other than Barriero, is a joke. I listened to PA for about a week while on the road and that was enough. Self promoting shill who thinks he knows everything. "Common Man" is even worse...he is all of the same, but doesn't even pretend to know anything. Major league radio hack. KSTP is so much more informative...

One word:

Benefits

It's cheaper to pay overtime than have another full-timer with health, dental, 401K match, etc.

You may be right, but if star was full-time and meatball was (2 days a week) - now meat is full-time and Leber comes in two days a week + OT for the other fill in guys.

I don't see how the morning show saved much $, to me they wanted to shake it up.

Sludge sucks.

You seem to be operating under an assumption that one full-time radio guy makes the same as another full-time radio guy. And, that isn't even close to the case.

They are saving money because Morris was making A LOT of jack. Meat Sauce is making A LOT less than that. Therefore, big money saved.

I'm no fan of Kfan, but making such personal-life jabs against PA seems really wrong.

I assumed that Meat was making less the Morris. I don't know what a guy like Morris would make babbleing for a few hours a day. I can't imagine much.

Was Morris making $45k? Now Meatball $28k? Leber 12k? OT 5k?

Difference is that PA is himself on the air. Common Man is a bit.

I know I shouldn't ask this on the Gopher bball board but if anyone knows... what's the deal with Carl Gerb*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#....do we know who that voice/bit is? I have only heard him a couple times but know he has been on for awhile.

It's Kevin Seifert.

You can easily tell if you listen to Barreiro and Seifert talking. When Dan asks Kevin a question that makes him think, he occasionally accidentally shifts into the Gerby-esque voice while he's coming up with an answer.

I'm sure Morris was making closer to 90,000, especially considering all over the voice work (Cowboy Jacks, etc).

I know Blandon decently and I have no idea what he makes now, but I know that when he JUST started with Common he was making enough to live. I mean, he was broke but it was his only job and he didn't like moonlight by working at a gas station. So I'd guess he was at around $35,000 back then. Morris was making more than $45,000.

As far as the OP, I'm not a fan of PA at all. I think he's unlistenable since Dubay left. However, he is what he is. You can't expect a lot of college sports info from the guy when he knows nothing about college sports (he admits it). I can see being annoyed with PA for some football take or if he proclaimed to know a lot about college sports, but the guy is more or less forced to fake interest in college athletics for the sake of his job. If you were a fan of his before Wednesday, I don't think that should have changed anything for you.

As far as the Barrero (spelling?) interview with Dakich, that was pretty good. I think he is a good interviewer, I thought his takes Wednesday about Gopher basketball were absolute garbage and annoyed me more than anything PA could have said. The guy makes a living out of arguing strawmans and he does it for such a LONG period of time that you forget that he's arguing a strawman.

He was yapping about (for probably 20 minutes) about how the barn is not the loudest arena he has ever been inside. This was in response to people talking about the amazing atmosphere inside the barn on Tuesday. We get it, you went to Indiana. We get it, there are louder arenas, but that doesn't change the fact that the Barn was rocking on Tuesday. His strawman about their being louder arenas? OK, so?

Excellent post. PA also felt he had to fake interest in hockey as some sort of tribute to his former co-host and the original show's content, and now he continues to do that even though I'd guess he'd rather not. For most sports he's woefully under-informed. For pro football he knows just enough so that he doesn't identify with the average fan but not enough that he could be an insightful analyst or commentator. Thank God for Pete Bercich on that game broadcast.

Yeah. I will say this though, I've worked in radio a tiny bit and part of me thinks that it might be Dan Cole still. I hear them cut away sometimes when it's Common Man, Gerbschmidt and Barrero. There is a quick cutaway. It's not as obvious as when Dave Ryan does War of the Roses when he cuts in his voice, but I've heard it a couple times.

That might just be some editing but yeah.

Morris was way, way, way more than 45K.

Morning drive lead hosts in a Top 20 market are fairly well paid.

The he should have been canned long ago. I figured four idiots laughing over their lame jokes and hitting stupid sounder buttons couldn't be making much ching for a few hours of work.

If Sludge and Chis are making 70k+/- that is ridiculous, Chad Abbot should be fired.

In a market this size, I have heard that Tom Bernard, Dave Lee, Dave Ryan, Dan Barreiro, and others make excellent money for a "few hours of work" on a drive time show.

I can see Barreiro and Bernard making BIG bucks. Comparing them to the PowerTrip guys is like putting Opera and Ricky Lake on the same level.

But Ricki Lake was great in "Hairspray" (the original John Waters version with Divine).

Going back to whether PA is divorced or not (I have not info on that), but I was just thinking it would have to be damn near impossible to keep a healthy marriage going when you are working in that industry and expected to work and prepare during the day, and then watch every single sports game at night so you are prepared for discussions the next day. How many spouses would put up with that?

Gerbschmidt isn't Seifert, but I can see where people would draw that conclusion.

Evidence?

Please tell me that you don't think that because you heard the Barreiro show that had both Seifert and Gerby on at the same time...

Many average people do that all the time. People have regular jobs and then watch a game or two many days. It's not like he would have to watch every game on every night. But you would think he'd at least watch a few minutes of the local sports teams and read a few articles about the players/team once in awhile. That wouldn't be much of a commitment. You're not talking about 4 hours worth every single day.

It just blows my mind when someone's job is to talk local sports and they have no clue when it comes to a bunch of it. It should be your job to at least be somewhat informed.

I think the horse racing announcing probably has more of an impact on his life than the football...but the two together, plus the show, plus the Vikings evening show...probably a lot of time away from home.

For every hour PA is on the air, he dedicates roughly 1 hour of prep time.

The Carl Gerbschmidt character is intriguing. He claims to work for the Wisconsin DOT and frequently collaborates with his counterparts in MnDOT. The way he throws around terminology when talking about his work, it's got a ring of authenticity to it. He's either a well-drawn character with a back story and depth whose actor is well schooled on the back story, or...

I thought Gerby is a producer for one of their other stations, 102.1?

One other thing that impresses me with 1500 is they invest in sending their hosts to events. Judd was at Twins Spring Training, Phil is there now, Sandell went to the Gophers bowl game, etc. That gives them a tremendous advantage on interviews and analysis.

Go Gophers!!

1500 is essentially trying to become a third sports section in the Twin Cities and getting the most out of them having them do radio, too. I don't get the paper at home anymore, so I get my news online. I read as many (or more) of the articles from the 1500 guys as the local papers.

And you're right: it absolutely gives them a great deal of insight -- more than the typical sports radio host in this market. Except for the morning, when there's nothing local, I listen to 1500 most of the time now. That AM signal is killing them, though.
