How's Koi doing?

What's the deal with #8 from USC after the INT? Koi was celebrating near the student section, and #8 ran up to knock the ball out of his hands. You can see this in the highlights at the :22 mark. Unfortunately, it cuts off right as the USC kid reaches for the ball.

It's USC's football since it was an interception. I'm guessing they wanted it back, Koi just wasn't done with it yet

Honestly thought that was why they threw the flags... against USC.

Someone said in this thread, he looks like an Alabama athlete. Oh yeah, that was me. Seriously the guy has IT, was all over the field once he came in, just a different looking athlete, even compared to the other MN DB’s who are very athletic.
What a great get for the program. The interception was amazing by the way.

If Kerry Brown/14 does not go down with an injury, is Koi on the field to force the fumble resulting in a TD drive and to make the INT to seal the game? One wonders......

I don't find myself wondering where or not he sees significant DB snaps from here forward.
Kerry Brown, I’d like you to meet Zach Annexstad. He will help you understand the situation.

Perich is never leaving the starting lineup until his name gets called!

Kerry Brown is a hell of a player too. He is not losing all his playing time to Koi. They will find a way to get Brown on the field (might mean less time for Gousby and Bryson).

We need to find a way to get Kerry Brown and Koi both lots of playing time. Brown is a playmaker, too, and a very aggressive tackler. He's no Annexstad.

They have three really good safeties. But Perich just might be the best. Would be good to work them all in!

He looked like the best player on the field yesterday

You could have stopped there.

Barring injury, this kid will go further than anyone else on the field that day.

And, or different alignments.

Just saw that Brown won B1G freshman on the 16th of September!

Also saw that Gousby is a Sophmore!

Here come the people saying one of these guys will bolt for big NIL$$$.

Yeah....I'm sure 8 was pissed about the situation and should have just waited for Koi to drop the ball but in the end he was just trying to get the USC football back since teams use their own balls when on offense and kicking in college football.

It is a great problem to have but it certainly could lead to someone jumping ship after the season. But no point worrying about what might or might not happen in the off season.

Just great knowing we have a bunch of really good players in our secondary and after the USC game it is safe to say the pass D is for real and not just a product of playing teams like Iowa and Michigan who struggle with the forward pass.

Perich is really some kind of athlete. I think what set Winfield, Jr., apart was his unbelievable feel for the game. Don't get me wrong, Winfield, Jr., is a very good athlete, but Perich looks like he's a level above him in that department. I see nothing but really good things ahead for Perich.

Is it pronounced "Per-ISH," or "Per-ich?" I hear both said.

The advantage Perich has over AWJR is that he is 3 inches taller. AWJR was undersized which is why he didn't get the attention he deserved as a recruit but he proved what kind of player he was once he got here and is killing it in the NFL.

Perich seems to have a nose for the ball and is a playmaker. Hopefully he can stay healthy so that we get to enjoy multiple years of him patrolling the secondary making plays. We got cheated out of a big chunk of AWJR's college career due to the season ending injuries he suffered.

I'm somewhat familiar with the various Iron Range-area ethnicities and I think it would be -ich similarly to the pronunciaton of former Minnesota Governor Rudy Perpich's name. I don't know if there is a difference between the Serbian and Croation dialects of the Serbo-Croat language, but that might be in play here because, like you, I have heard -ich names pronounced both ways and sometimes--although rarely--with an -ick.

It's the "itch" sound. Click the link below to hear Koi pronounce it. If you go to the official Gopher football roster you can click on a player's name and then there is a spot to hear the pronunciation.

When I saw Gousby and Walley in uniform pre-game, my spirits were bolstered. Throw Perich in there, our DB situation is looking real good.

The interception was highlight reel no doubt, but his run support is really f'ing good. Young man has a nose for the ball. Reminds me of Harrison Smith, but maybe even more athletic. Ceiling for him is only growing.
Dude! More athletic than Harrison Smith? A 6'2" and 215 pound future hall of famer? Described as an "ultra-athletic, big and smart safety" in his NFL draft profile and still showing it in his 13th year in the NFL at age 35? Seriously, the guy is 35 and still playing at a very high level in the league!!!! I hope Koi is lucky enough to be even close to as good as Harrison Smith and I'm sure he does too.

I think Koi looks really great, but some of you are getting a little out over your skiis don't you think? I've watched a good amount of Ohio State football and would take their kick returner over Koi. He's faster and quicker, just not as big. An absolutely dynamic athlete. Koi ran a 10.89 100m in high school. That compares to a 10.71 for Cooper Dejean (someone he's frequently compared to) and a 10.36 for the 5-star wide receiver recruit USC just got.

One great decision Koi made was joining the U of M. He can start his true freshman year and be showcased all over the field because we just don't get many high 4-star/low 5-star athletes here. Had he gone to Ohio State, he'd be sitting on the bench waiting his turn behind their two all-American safety candidates including Caleb Downs, who's only a sophomore. Not only is Koi an excellent athlete, he's also smart and strategic! OK. I agree with you, he does sound something like Harrison Smith. We/he can only hope!

NFL bound
Nothing like a little pressure for the lad. If he stays healthy and keeps tackling like he does and can read the offense, he has a shot. Nobody is NFL bound after 6 games.

I would maybe hope he stays here for at least 3 years.

I think they both get drafted. This has to be one of the better safety groups in the country. McDonald was starting at ISU and can’t get on the field here. The talent and depth is pretty special.

I think Koi's track time was junior year. I don't think he ran senior year due to injury. He is probably as fast as Dejean. I actually think Koi is faster (or will be faster by the time he's drafted) than Harrison Smith but isn't as physical. Smith also has pretty good game sense and is a violent hitter. Time will tell where Koi ends up in that area.

I believe he injured his hamstring in the state meet senior year.

Just shows how hard it is to be a punt returner and be trusted in that roll. It took us getting our 2nd highest recruit ever and a top 100 player to finally see what helmet schools get every year.
Jeff Jones #1? (Sigh) Also, didn't realize how highly recruited Carter Coughlin was. Looks like he is #3 behind Koi.

It’s not his job. They have staff for that for a reason. Bush league act.

And you know this how? Do you really think the USC player was worried about getting chewed out by the equipment manager for not coming back to the sidelines with "their" football?

I don't think anyone was caring about who owns that particular football at that time - the USC guy was just being petty.

10.87 May of 2024 for Koi as a senior. Cooper's time was also as a senior. Both of them have multiple times in the low 11's. I think they are likely comparable. Very similar size too. My eye test is that Cooper is slightly faster, but we'll see. Koi seems very quick and instinctive and seems like a very good leaper, but Cooper was that way too. Hey, if Koi turns into Cooper or, even better, Robert Smith, we'll all be very happy! Both amazing athlete's and football players.

Cooper ran mid-4.4 40's while Smith ran upper 4.5's for the NFL draft. I feel like the training for the 40 has gotten better though and times have come down. Everything is such a science nowadays. It was posted here previously on GopherHole that Koi has already run a 4.54 40. My money says he is around a 4.5 40 when he's tested for the draft in a few years. That's plenty fast enough for an NFL safety.
