How serious of a canidate will Glen Mason be for OSU?

Don't lecture me on being a Gopher fan. I'm not pissed off about anything. Just am sick of those who are satisifed with a 32-48 record. Pathetic. I'll never be happy with that. Never.

minngg,

1. Who stated they were satisified with a 32-48 record?

2. You seem to just look at a statistic and draw the conclusion that somebody must be fired. You seem unwilling to explore the possibility that there are deeper underlying reasons for this record.

I will stipulate to the following:

Glen Mason is a better coach than Tim Brewster.

The Gopher FB program definitely had some good teams and big wins under Mason.

Mason's record stacks up well in comparison to most Gopher coaches since Warmath.

But, I will also stipulate to the following facts:

Under Glen Mason - No big 10 titles, No New Year's day Bowl games. This is FACT - it cannot be argued away.

The ultimate question - what is your wish, your hope, your goal for the Gopher FB program?

Do you want to see the Gophers play for a Big 10 title, or a New Year's Day Bowl Game?

Yes, I do.

Did they get there under Mason? NO they did not.

Will they get there under Kill? I don't know.

When you change coaches, 3 things may happen. You can stay the same, you can get worse, or you can get better. Under Brewster, the Gophs got worse. So, they have changed coaches again. I hope they get better.

But, endlessly rehashing the past, and endlessly guoting stats about BIG TEN WINS accomplish nothing. NOTHING. (see, I can use all caps, too.)

If Iowa, Wisconsin, Northwestern and Illinois can play in the Rose Bowl, there's no reason why the Gophers can't play in the Rose Bowl. They did NOT get there under Mason. That is a FACT.
That may be good enough for some. I hope for more.

short, nasty tempered norsky: Now we get to the ULTIMATE TRUTH moment...

WHY in heck is badger joel macturi STILL the ad? After the mess he created with Mason that cost the U of M millions and millions of dollars...WHY is he still the ad? After the replacement that he hired for Mason who he extended and then 7 games into the next seasons he had to fire and buy out, WHY is he still the ad? After he had to hire pr specialist Dave Mona to basically hire the next football coach, why is he still the ad? Why not Mona IF Mona was necessary to get bjm through tne next hire? Based upon the condition of the Men's revenue sports...why the H is bjm still the ad?????

Fire the stinking ad when you fire the football coach when the stinking ad just keeps running the men's revenue sports into the ground?????

At some point in time, you HAVE to ask the question: what is the athletic director doing WRONG here??????????

I hope Coach Kill has a fantastic LONG LASTING career here as the Gopher's Football Coach. I hope Tubby can finally turn around the sinking ship in the Men's Hoops Program. I hope Lucia can rejuvinate his program somehow. But why on God's Great Green Earth is badger joel macturi still drawing a pay check???????????

You can blame the coach all you want short, nasty tempered norsky: at what time does the lightbulb go on for you wondering just what the hey the athletic director is doing wrong over there????????? The men's revenue sports basically pay for EVERYTHING in the athletic department. This incapable and incompetent ad...has been emporlyed at the U since the summer of 2002. He has directed the men's revenue sports program steadily DOWN HILL. Now, with Coach Kill just being a new coach, I am sure he will be here at least four more years...much longer, I hope. Yet, already bjm has been allowed to potentially impact the football program out until the year 2015. IF Coach Kill manages to improve the program back to the Mason level during the next five seasons, I am sure he will be due a raise and an extension long before the 2015 season. Yet, at 3.2 wins per season, that would be 16 more BT wins and 4.8 BT losses per season for a projected 42 BT wins vs. 70 BT losses. Would you be happy with that norsky????? badger joel macturi has totally FAILED the football program...

But, you say you are tired of hearing about Big Ten wins???????????????? Well norsky: The Gophers are a member of the Big Ten Conference in football AND the number of Big Ten wins vs. the number of Big Ten losses is INCREDIBLY important to the well-being, health and condition of the Gopher Football Program.

My new statistic will be the total number of Big Ten Football wins badger joel macturi has overseen since his arrival. ; 0 ) So, the 2002 season would be where we start. Well norsky, I'll be darned: badger joel macturi has overseen 26 Big Ten wins and 46 Big Ten losses in football. That's a MISERABLE .3611 winning percentage. Damn...Mason was even better than THAT. He hasn't given us a Big Ten Championship in 9 stinking seasons. What the hell is badger joel macturi doing still collecting a pay check from the lamest of lame duck prexys...prexy b????? Why has prexy b been trying to extend him kind of the way prexys of the United States grant pardons to all kinds of crooks and criminals on their way out of office?????

IF you didn't like Mason's record, HOW on earth could you possibly like bjm's record enough to justify his continued mismanagement of the men's revenue sports. And just LOOK at that ugly situation with Women's Hoops. bjm MUST be thrown under the bus NOW...

I have a few thoughts on this topic.

Why on earth is Joel Maturi STILL the Athletic Director?

There is a very simple answer to this question. Maturi's bosses at the U like the way he has performed his job. And they are the only people who get to decide how long he keeps it. In their view the Athletics Department has never been in better shape. The budget is balanced, the athletes are doing better in school, and there have not been any major NCAA violations. It goes without saying that winning Big 10 Championships is nowhere near as important to the people who run the U as it is to their fans.

Really... can the repeatedly banned Wren not be banned again?

I've been asking that on a weekly basis (at least) for months now and have received no response. I don't know if Wayne purchased GopherHole or what, but the board is virtually unreadable.

Maybe if some of you former Brewster die hards would stop bashing Glen Mason every time his name is mentioned, Wren would calm down.

If the board is so unreadable to, ignore him. His posts may be repetitive and long, but he correctly calls a number of you out on the silly positions so many of you took months and years ago, and were very reluctant to abandon as the evidence on your hero Brewster piled up.

Denial and revisionist history at its worst! Admit it, you were on the wrong side of the issue, is it that hard to just admit it instead of attacking Wren?

What the f*(% are you talking about? I'm not a Brewster diehard, or a Mason diehard, a Weber diehard, or a Gray diehard. I'm a Gopher diehard. I'm for whatever is best for my University and its football program. The #1 problem with this message board is that everything has to degenerate into "my coach vs. your coach, my QB vs. your QB." I don't have a horse in any race, other than that which is best for the school and the football team. Wayne is the worst hypocrite of them all, because all he does is bash the administration and Brewster, and yet any criticism of Mason or Weber is off-limits. Have your pet biases, but don't expect anyone to take you seriously when you hijack every...single...thread with your position, which is well-known and driven into the ground by now. For example, your fixation with the marching band going down University. We're all well aware - leave it alone. You and Wayne both.

I'm not on the wrong side of any issue. I supported Mason until it was obvious he was no longer interested in putting forth his best effort as Gopher coach, which was around the end of 2004 or so. To be paid millions of dollars to work your job from September-December and phone it in (both literally and figuratively) the rest of the year is a far worse offense than anything Brewster ever did. I then supported Brewster from the moment he was hired until the second he was fired, because it was obvious to anyone that was paying attention that he poured his heart and soul into his job. Do I wish he would've done a lot of things differently? Yes, absolutely. But I'm never going to attack someone when they're genuinely doing the best they can.

It is Time

Really... can the repeatedly banned Wren not be banned again?

Great question. I am certainly tired on him proselytizing his agenda on us with his long babbling triads. Who do we contact at GopherHole to discuss this?

Since Brewster was fired there has not been one thread started by anyone to defend Brewster and bash Mason. Not one. Every post criticizing Mason has been in response to a Mason supporter trying to convince us what a good coach Mason was and why he should have never been fired. The Mason diehards in GopherHole have never gotten over his firing and have never stopped boring the hell out of us about it.

The hiring of Brewster was a mistake. Nobody can deny that. But to demonize Brewster who probably spent most of his life dreaming about being a Big 10 coach and who then spent every waking moment when he got the opportunity to turn the Gophers into a consistent winner is beyond pathetic. Anyone who does it is a first rate jerk - plain and simple. You are obviously not capable of showing empathy for anyone who tries their hardest at something, but fails.

Brewster supporters have all moved on since he was fired. It is high time Mason supporters do the same. Your obsession about him is bordering on mental illness. You really might need help to deal with it.

Go4Broke, you are the one with mental health issues.

You started bashing Glen Mason in the third post on this thread long before anyone suggested that he never should have been fired.

You comments on my Mason positon are way off. I can accept the fact firing Mason in 2006 was an acceptable option, if they had hired Bo Pelini or someone like Harbaugh.

The fact is, Maturi F'ed up the biggest decision he ever made with the hirinig of Brewster, and should not be let off the hook. You blind Koolaid drinkers were all made to look like the fools you are.

DP68:

1. You have all sorts of biases and were way over to one side on a number of issues with a tendency to attack anyone who does/did not agree with you.

2. Now you are the one who decides on whether one is "taken seriously" on this board. What a burden that must be!

get over yourself

3. The concept of the Band/University Ave. was promoted for years in an effort to build up support of the radical concept of an on campus stadium. It was the old bait and switch.

I am not the only one who was irritated by this deception and the poor pre-game atmosphere around the stadium. You cannot seem to get over my reasonable position, so try harder to stop obsessing on it.

Even the OSU band was able to march from the Alumni Center plaza, down the street, then around the stadium; a more appealing pre-game plan than our band is allowed to have.

I started bashing Mason in the third post because the whole premise of this thread was about trying to defend and rehabilitate him. The idea that Ohio State would hire Mason after they already passed on him and he has been out of football for four years is beyond ridiculous.

My point is this (and I have been making it for years). If Mason diehards quit starting threads like this then they will never hear from the Mason haters (like me). In football years, Mason is ancient history. The only time I ever think about him is in GopherHole because his supporters refuse to let him go. They need to get over him. Their lives will be better if they do.
