How much trouble is Ryan Day in?

The simple reason is balance
Both jobs he is going to have more than enough money. Even if he takes a pay cut.
An NFL job is way easier in the offseason even if the season is a month or two longer.

I would rather be an nfl coach for 6 million than a college coach for 10

I would do either one for 800k
We are seeing guys move from college to the NFL for the reasons you mention but I think Day will stick it out until he is fired by Ohio State at which point he will take his massive buyout and will still be young enough to have a long career in the NFL if that is what he chooses to do.

Lose to Michigan and come up short repeating for the National Title in 2025 and he will probably get his chance to do something else anyway. :)

I think a national title buys him another 3-4 years without admin getting on him even if fans do. I don’t think he was ever really at risk. It was more media amplifying the fan base

I do think without the national title he probably is on a really hot seat going into next year

It would probably take 5+ losses for him to get fired next year. (Michigan game can count as 2 losses) And he has never lost more than 2 in a season.

Why would he jump to NFL? He's never even been on an NFL staff. He's not Harbaugh. He should have a comfortable deal to be at tOSU competing for titles and putting guys into the NFL.
Challenge. Something different. Etc. he’s going to 70 million with his current contract. At a certain point with guys at the top, it’s not just about money. That would be the version I could see him leaving, or if he’s tired of recruiting and someone is willing to give him an NFL HC job (not saying they would, just that’s the only circumstance and I don’t see him leaving any time soon if even ever)

It can be debated whether or not Day was in any sort of true danger of getting fired but I think you are underselling the importance of "The Game". The National Championship certainly buys him some slack but the losing streak to Michigan is a big problem for him and he needs a win over them real bad.

I mean think about the fact that he has never lost more than 2 games in a season at Ohio State and the term hot seat is even being considered in relation to his job status. That is insane. The level of success he has had there SHOULD translate to great job security.....but it doesn't.

I disagree on the taking 5 losses for him to get fired after next year. If he loses to Michigan again and they miss the playoff somehow I could totally see them making a move.

Harbaugh was able to survive an extended losing streak against Ohio State but he was also Michigan royalty.

I was just about to ask if winning the national title is better than beating Michigan in Columbus.
If you think about it, firing a coach solely for losing a rivalry game gives your rival a lot of power.

It's like saying the Michigan game means more than all the others on the schedule to the extent you would fire a guy who was 47-1 in the other Big Ten games.

It's like firing Fleck after the 2019 season because he went 11-2 but lost to iowa and wisconsin.

Disagree

I think their admin is smarter than the average online fan

Which is why they are successful

I don't disagree on the administration being less knee jerk than the fanbase but I also don't think they are maybe quite as forgiving as you do.

Either way, Day will be fine in the long run. He will either keep getting paid to win there at a high level or he will get paid a massive amount of money not to be the coach there and can go somewhere else :)

I just hope he leaves but I’m not holding my breath

What if Day lost twice to Michigan in the same season?

I hope Day leaves too, but I think if they promoted someone like Chip Kelly, I doubt they would skip a beat.

I think the crazy fringe of their fanbase may think this way. However, their admin is not that dumb. If you look back historically, OSU does not turn over coaches quickly. He just won a national championship. He is in no danger in getting fired next year unless he made an away from football mistake that was unforgivable.

Unless he goes Ed O on the bit, he should be safe. Day can come off as a tool in games and in half time/post game interviews but I think off the field due to some heartbreak loss in his family I think he does a lot of good in the mental health community. Seems like he has a good head on his shoulders about everything.

Never losing more than 2 games in a season lasts a long time

Larry Coker got 5 seasons after a national title

No one will survive the pressure.

As long as they don’t hire fickell, they’ll be fine. They’ve lost 3 games twice since 2001. Tressel was 10-3 once with losses to final poll #3 usc, #4 Texas and #8 psu.

Fickell lost 7 games. It’s the only time it’s ever happened in their history.

Fickell was put in a tough spot with Tressell resigning but his one year at the helm sticks out like a sore thumb when it is surrounded by great seasons on either side.
