How much trouble is Ryan Day in?

I think Ryan Day is very much in the hot seat, mostly due to being 1-4 vs Michigan, but also because of the following:

2019 post season: Close loss to Clemson in CFP Semifinal.
2020: Blowout loss in CFP final to Alabama.
2021: Missed CFP due to losing to Michigan and dropping out of the top 4 right at the end of the season. Missed B1G Championship game as well.
2022: Close loss to Georgia in CFP semi-final. Missed B1G championship game due to loss to Michigan.
2023: Missed CFP due to losing to Michigan and dropping out of the top 4 right at the end of the season. Missed B1G Championship game as well.
2024: Missed B1G Championship due to loss to Michigan.

They'll make the expanded playoff for sure, but won't get a 1st round bye because they dropped out of the top 5 due to their loss to Michigan. Depending on where they rank, they might not even get to be the host of their 1st round game.

If they are able to survive to the semi-finals or the finals that might be enough to prevent them from firing Ryan Day, but if OSU exits in the first round or the quarter finals I don't know that Ryan Day remains HC.

It's the double edged sword of high expectations. If PJ Fleck had the Gophers playing at the level of OSU we wouldn't even think of firing him, but OSU fans expect the team to be a national title contender every year, and expect to beat Michigan every year as well.

The risk of firing him, though, is the risk of this being somewhat of a Bo Pelini moment (obviously he was fired mostly for reasons unrelated to his performance as HC, but the point still stands) where you fire a successful coach and then go into a multi-year tailspin where the person you hire to replace them doesn't perform.

I agree. He has a history of losing to teams with equal talent. He finally beat two top 5 teams this year in Penn State and Indiana, but they don't have equal talent. Is he a great recruiter, but just a mediocre coach especially on game day? I don't think that's enough to stay at Ohio State. These playoffs are huge for him!

In contrast, did you see Kirby Smart from Georgia going nuts, running and jumping around, during the overtimes at Georgia Tech? I couldn't believe how much energy he had after such a long game. He was coaching his butt off. To have that level of fight left after such a long game was impressive to me. That rubs off on your players. I think to some degree he demoralized the other coach who seemed to just run out of gas. I was worn out and I was just watching. These high level coaches are just different kinds of human beings!

I think sometimes offensive geniuses have trouble being leaders of the whole team when the going gets tough. The same is probably true from defensive geniuses. Not sure that’s the case here…but when there is the fight going on and he is just standing there watching it’s like….are you the head coach of the program, or are you the offensive coordinator

I think he sees that too and it’s why he brought in an offensive play caller this year

Freeman just signed a 4 year extension with the ☘️, so he apparently wouldn’t be the first 📞 , if Day is sent packing. Amazing how certitude isn’t 100% infallible🥴

Marcus Freeman is staying in South Bend and getting a raise.

After leading Notre Dame to an 11-1 regular season and a berth in this year’s College Football Playoff, the former Ohio State linebacker signed a four-year contract extension with the Fighting Irish on Sunday.

That means nothing. We all know Notre Dame is likely to lose to Indiana and then everyone will call for his head. Which then OSU won't hire him.

Indiana is a-7 road 🐶🥴

ND doesn’t roll that way last time I checked.

Let me know if you wanna make a vacation board bet, two weeks?

Since you’re apparently a fan of certitude as well, you don’t need 7, but I’ll give you 5 points.

He has a contract through 2028... I bet gets a new one / extension / rework.

Not sure the NFL will offer that much.
I just have to think at this point, the NFL is far less of a headache than NCAA/Ohio St.

If he failed in the NFL he could always scoop up another prime gig back in the collegiate ranks.

I think the hours are better in the NFL....

I don't think his skill set means he's good in the NFL, and I'm not sure anyone would assume it.

Meanwhile he is now proven in CFB land, and the recruiting advantage in CFB is something you don't get in the NFL.

I'm not even sure the NFL provides the kinda guaranteed money CFB provides.

agree probably not in terms of the term/length of contract and the resultant insane buyouts. Kirby Smart would slot as #4 in the NFL in terms of AAV. There are more NCAA guys making 9mil or more/year than there are in the NFL.

If I'm Day, think it more depends on if he enjoys recruiting/year round work you get in the NCAA. NFL you are still doing that in terms of scouting, discussing draft boards, etc., but you're not hosting recruits and flying to their games/camps all year. Agree that I don't think anyone is giving Day an NFL contract as a HC at this point. No way he's jumping ship to be a coordinator given that would be a massive pay cut with far less a guarantee than what he's now earned at OSU

He makes $10M a year. He's not going anywhere and has no leverage. (Average NFL Coach make $7M) No NFL team is going to pay him what he makes now. Ohio State should feel lucky to have him.

I think it would be the ultimate eff-U to the Buckeye nation fanbase for him to walk away now after the National Title, when they overwhelmingly wanted him out 6 weeks ago (probably even still before NYD).

Nothing else to prove at Ohio St.

The dough is nice though, so there is that.

Any job Day leaves for at some point will be a "Retirement" job. He will never make more than what he is making in Columbus and there will be considerably less pressure. Gets a 1 year reprieve on potentially losing the Michigan game again.

It’s more fun to panic when there’s no discernible reason to 🤷‍♂️, in my experience, especially if one finds themselves in a discotheque

OSU fans always used to say "if we win every game of the season and win the title but lost to Michigan it's a failed season".

Now we can at least say those people are full of crap.

i mean he's 45. i would envision he plans on coaching for quite awhile yet unless winning one kills his desire. Could absolutely see him jumping for the NFL/new challenge at some point in the future, similar to what we've seen with multiple high profile college coaches and I don't think he'd view that as a retirement job but rather as an I'm bored and want something new or he doesn't want to recruit any longer.

That’s insane - really is just blasphemous.

There are never any true adults on the room when shiny toys are involved.

The longer I live, the more I’m convinced, 👽 want nothing to do with our low level species.

Humans, heck no!

Why would he jump to NFL? He's never even been on an NFL staff. He's not Harbaugh. He should have a comfortable deal to be at tOSU competing for titles and putting guys into the NFL.

Mo when all the pro players say their schools, they’ll say -

The National Champion, The OSU.

I figure the school will attempt to shoehorn it into everything and anything, as they are classic insecure narcissists.

Except it isn't crap because for as thrilled as their fans will be about the National Title the loss and losing streak to Michigan will still eat at them.

To a lesser degree think of our 11 win season in 2019. That was an awesome season but for some it still falls short because it doesn't include wins over our main rivals.

Day is off the hotseat but at a place like Ohio State his seat will still be warm until he beats Michigan. Most places a National title would have you in completely safe job territory but that isn't the case there and if Ohio State goes to Ann Arbor and loses next year the calls for Day's job will be back in full force again.

The simple reason is balance
Both jobs he is going to have more than enough money. Even if he takes a pay cut.
An NFL job is way easier in the offseason even if the season is a month or two longer.

I would rather be an nfl coach for 6 million than a college coach for 10

I would do either one for 800k

All the Michigan fans simply look at the Ohio State fans and say "You're Welcome" for motivating the players after Michigan beat them in November.
It's interesting that OSU wouldn't have made the field of 4 with their record of 2 losses, but in the field of 12 they got in. Good for the Big10 in winning the last two championships as it deflates the SEC bragging a little bit.
