How much trouble is Ryan Day in?

I think Ryan Day is very much in the hot seat, mostly due to being 1-4 vs Michigan, but also because of the following:

2019 post season: Close loss to Clemson in CFP Semifinal.
2020: Blowout loss in CFP final to Alabama.
2021: Missed CFP due to losing to Michigan and dropping out of the top 4 right at the end of the season. Missed B1G Championship game as well.
2022: Close loss to Georgia in CFP semi-final. Missed B1G championship game due to loss to Michigan.
2023: Missed CFP due to losing to Michigan and dropping out of the top 4 right at the end of the season. Missed B1G Championship game as well.
2024: Missed B1G Championship due to loss to Michigan.

They'll make the expanded playoff for sure, but won't get a 1st round bye because they dropped out of the top 5 due to their loss to Michigan. Depending on where they rank, they might not even get to be the host of their 1st round game.

If they are able to survive to the semi-finals or the finals that might be enough to prevent them from firing Ryan Day, but if OSU exits in the first round or the quarter finals I don't know that Ryan Day remains HC.

It's the double edged sword of high expectations. If PJ Fleck had the Gophers playing at the level of OSU we wouldn't even think of firing him, but OSU fans expect the team to be a national title contender every year, and expect to beat Michigan every year as well.

The risk of firing him, though, is the risk of this being somewhat of a Bo Pelini moment (obviously he was fired mostly for reasons unrelated to his performance as HC, but the point still stands) where you fire a successful coach and then go into a multi-year tailspin where the person you hire to replace them doesn't perform.

I agree. He has a history of losing to teams with equal talent. He finally beat two top 5 teams this year in Penn State and Indiana, but they don't have equal talent. Is he a great recruiter, but just a mediocre coach especially on game day? I don't think that's enough to stay at Ohio State. These playoffs are huge for him!

In contrast, did you see Kirby Smart from Georgia going nuts, running and jumping around, during the overtimes at Georgia Tech? I couldn't believe how much energy he had after such a long game. He was coaching his butt off. To have that level of fight left after such a long game was impressive to me. That rubs off on your players. I think to some degree he demoralized the other coach who seemed to just run out of gas. I was worn out and I was just watching. These high level coaches are just different kinds of human beings!

I think sometimes offensive geniuses have trouble being leaders of the whole team when the going gets tough. The same is probably true from defensive geniuses. Not sure that’s the case here…but when there is the fight going on and he is just standing there watching it’s like….are you the head coach of the program, or are you the offensive coordinator

I think he sees that too and it’s why he brought in an offensive play caller this year
