Trying to distract myself from watching election coverage for awhile. . .

I think The Rolling Stones have become an underrated band through the years. They haven’t put out a decent record for years and because their tours became a greatest hits revue for the boomer set, it seems their greatness (Sticky Fingers, Let it Bleed, Exile on Main Street, Beggars Banquet was an incredible run, I would argue never matched by another band-and yes, I know I have them out of order) is forgotten by some. Unlike their contemporaries and against all odds (looking at you Keith Richards), they maintained their primary lineup after Brian Jones died, which happened early enough in the band’s history so as not to end the band’s run.

Laugh about the rest of the song, yes, but the guitar licks in La Vida Loca are genuinely hot.

I could argue that the 5 best Billy Joel songs are better than the 5 best Bowie songs. But the 25 best David Bowie songs are definitely better than the 25 best Billy Joel songs. Not that I agree, but I could make that argument.

"Better" is always a tricky word. But as a Billy Joel fan (and David Bowie fan, too, mind you), I know how deep the catalogue is. The last show of his that I attended, he did a deep dive into his first three albums. The crowd was like, what?, and I was in hog heaven.

It's the variety of music that puts Minneapolis over the top for me. Boston is rock (and ska?), Seattle is grunge/alt, Nashville is country, Memphis is blues. Mpls has a wide range of great homegrown music. Prince, obviously, and bands like The Replacements & Semisonic. There's also the hip hop scene. My cousin lives in SoCal and is really into underground hip hop, and even he says Mpls has the best underground scene in the nation. And then there's bands like Trampled By Turtles. How many bluegrass bands have played Letterman? So anyway, yeah it's that variety sells me on this hot take.

this is not necessarily a "hot take," but I am almost completely out-of-touch with whatever 'modern' music is these days. Most of the stuff I listen to is at least 30 or 40 years old. the only "new" music I buy is when people like Dylan or Springsteen put out a new album. (Dylan's new album is excellent).

Most of what I buy for music is back-catalog stuff - or getting CD versions of things I had on vinyl or cassette. I do not download.

for example, I recently re-discovered Pink Floyd, so I went out and got "Dark Side of the Moon" and "Wish You Were Here" on CD. David Gilmour's guitar work on "Shine On, You Crazy Diamond" is freakin' brilliant.

the thing is, when I was in HS, I followed the top 40 religiously. I always knew what the #1 song was that week. Now, I don't know and don't care.

I honestly can’t recall what swept these type of bands from the mainstream-MTV’s shift away from videos perhaps? ITunes arrival and the focus on singles? Whatever the case, the music deserves attention.

I love Everclear. I think of them as one of the best bands of the 90's. They actually are still around and have even have some good new music in the 2010's. Mid 90's was me college era, so I agree 100%. That time for music was awesome.

Nothing too innovative or risky, just a bunch of solid pop songs. They're like the Imagine Dragons of a decade earlier.
