High school state tournament

I am trying to watch the game but it seems like a time warp and I am watching on my parent's TV in the 70's. High definition it ain't.

It doesn't matter the quality of the picture if the quality of the play-by-play man is dreadful.

Was that Tom Izzo that was displayed on the scoreboard screen towards the end of the Apple Valley game.

Yup - sitting next to Flip Saunders.

I watched all or part of all 4 championship games today. It's clear that Travis and Jones are D-1 players. Hooker, I'm not sure. He might be a tweener at D-1: not quite quick enough to be a true PG, and not quite big enough to guard a SG.

I will say that I thought the officials allowed the 4A title game to become way too physical. Last time I read the rule book, chest-bumping the ball handler is supposed to be a foul. I hate it when people say "They're letting them play." Imagine if officials took that approach in other sports - like football. "Hey, that was a hold - OH, they're just letting them play."

MSHSL needs a shot clock too.

What exactly would a shot clock accomplish in high school?

I'll have my full thoughts on the tournament in a short while.

When private schools play, announce the cities they come from during introductions... Have a private school tourney by themselves...

My thoughts on the tournament:

-First off, a big thanks to the Minnesota Sports Broadcast Network for allowing me to clog up their broadcast bandwidth with my opinions.

-Yeah, we probably got a bit biased during Brainerd-Apple Valley, with everyone on our crew being small-town outstate guys (Osakis, Lake Park-Audubon, and St. Michael-Albertville before the population boom got to the school systems). However, some of the bias was understandable, given that they gave AV all they wanted for ¾ of the game.

-I’ve ragged on Eden Prairie and Lakeville North plenty in this spot over the years for being schools that need reminding that the winter sports season doesn’t end when their hockey team is knocked out of the playoffs. I’m going to continue doing so until their students actually show up for the state tournament. Also, you can add Edina to that list. Their student “support” was pathetic.

-The Thursday session of the Class A state tournament at Williams Arena is always an interesting blend of people. During the course of the day, I saw letter jackets and sports gear from all four corners of the state (Cook County, Kittson Central, Hills-Beaver Creek, and Caledonia).

-Park Center-Edina was equal parts PC being the real deal and Edina laying a stinker for the ages. Seriously? Twenty (20) percent from the field? No one on press row can remember that rancid of a performance this late in the tournament.

-If the MSHSL can use a multiplier down when it comes to free and reduced lunches, they can use a multiplier up when it comes to private schools. After review, Cretin-Derham Hall is the only metro private school that’s in 4A. Holy Family, Totino-Grace, Blake, Breck, Hill-Murray, Holy Angels, Benilde-St. Margaret’s, DeLaSalle, and St. Thomas Academy are all 3A and would do just fine in 4A. Both of the combatants in the 1A title game would have no problem in 2A. Minnehaha Academy, Providence Academy, Rochester Lourdes, St. Cloud Cathedral, and Winona Cotter are 3A schools and should be placed accordingly. I’ll also give credit to Southwest Minnesota Christian for having their fans come out in force for all three of their games.

-We suspected that between star power (Reid Travis, the Acey cousins, and Tyus Jones) and title game droughts (Apple Valley and PC had never been there, and Austin hasn’t won a title since 1958), we were going to get a big crowd for the night session on Saturday. We were not disappointed. 13,855 was the attendance, the largest such crowd since the four-class split.

- After 23 state tournaments and 10 title games, Jim Weinzeirl from Park Rapids is retiring from working the state tournament. His sons, Scott and Ryan, have worked multiple tournaments and title games themselves. A while ago, after Jim told the powers that be that this would be his last tournament, they offered to put him and the boys on a final. I thought that this was a very nice move. I’ve ragged on the MSHSL a lot, but I also give credit where it’s due, and it’s certainly due here. So when you saw Jim Weinzeirl, Scott Weinzeirl, and Ryan Weinzeirl on your screen, it was not a typo.

-For those of you advocating for a shot clock, what good will that do in high school? The only team that got to a big lead by running, then effectively switched to a full stall is DeLaSalle in the title game. I’ve seen that move backfire far more often than I’ve seen it work.

-The fact that Prep45 does not stream the basketball quarterfinals works well for us at MSBN, but it seems that they’re stealing money from the League. You would think this would come up in the contract negotiations.

-Also, the Target Center has to get a neutral floor for these events. Way too many players were spotting up for 3-pointers from the wrong line.

Another season of high school basketball in the books. Are we ever going to get to spring sports?

No wonder Izzo wins the recruiting battles, he coaches his team to the sweet sixteen at Auburn Hills and three hours later he is watching a recruit at the target center, relentless.

I think it depends on where the bumping is happening, if it is in the post let it go, hand checking, body checks out on the floor should be called, that's where B1G officiating really breaks down, Michigan State and Wisconsin get away with murder

With regards to private schools. They should have one of the sections/regions have ALL the private schools. So you would have 7 public school regions and one private school region. Not sure about b-ball, but this would be awesome in hockey, as far as I'm concerned.

And I'm sure Tubby would have been there as well had his team played Saturday instead of Sunday.

Austin fans chanting "daddy's money" at DLS?

Way to make yourself look super ignorant hahaha.

Travis would be a great pickup for the maroon and gold.

The response from the DLS fans was pretty humorous. I believe they came back with "We're your daddy".

Reid is a really nice prospect, I will be very interested to see where he ends up. He does have some reasonable perimeter skills, but I still see him as more of a 4 than a 3. He had some trouble staying in front of #24 last night (I believe that's one of the Aase boys), where he got beat pretty badly on the perimeter.

That chant doesn't even make sense to me. So they're making fun of people who have money? Since when is that a bad thing?

It doesn't help the 4A quarterfinal attendance for the games to be held at 10:00AM on a Wednesday. --See Reusse's blog on the subject here http://www.startribune.com/sports/blogs/199552111.html If you don't make the 4A games a primetime event, like the hockey games are, don't expect the students to treat the two as equal. The student sections at the target center are 100 feet from the court. It's ridiculous.

-I'd give a lot of credit for Edina's poor shooting performance to the Park Center's D', and maybe partial credit to the refs for allowing the physical D, yet calling weak fouls on Lynch.

-Who cares about the small school class championships? Austin, DeLaSalle and Marshall should be ashamed that they don't opt up to play for the state championship when they are clearly capable of playing on the highest level.

-The stall works, it's just not always enough to win games for inferior teams.

-The real solution is to not have the games at the Target Center. 13,500 people in Williams arena yesterday would have been awesome.

Since it was stated that it's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven. So...for a while now.

Shot clock is necessary because stalling and bs Princeton offenses bastardize the game, and puts player development in the backseat to winning. We should be encouraging measures that would make Minnesota prep basketball better and more compelling, not fighting them.

Unfortunately my second suggestion would never happen, but they should go down to 3 classes in basketball. Make Class A 1-399, AA 400-850, and AAA 851+. 4 classes for a state our size is too many. With these numbers you would have ~93 schools in the top class, which with opt ups added in would be a good number.

Reusse is full of crap. The 4A semifinals are already a primetime event. If the 4A quarters are put in the evening, no one shows up. The only way that many of the students in said 4A schools even bother to show up (here's looking at you Hopkins) is if they get out of school for it. Edina's quarterfinal was at 4 PM, and their semifinal at 8 PM. No one showed up for them.

Also, Reusse has no credibility when it comes to any of the winter state tournaments. I haven't seen him at either the hockey or BB tournament since I started going in 2009.

As for The Barn, I completely agree. However, if the League is serious about a long stay at Target Center (and based on their schedule scrambling for the next two years, they are), the TC or the League needs to spend the money on a true neutral floor.

You're listing the wrong schools that should be opting up to 4A. All of the metro privates I listed in my first post should be opting up to 4A, not Austin and Marshall.
