My thoughts on the tournament:
-First off, a big thanks to the Minnesota Sports Broadcast Network for allowing me to clog up their broadcast bandwidth with my opinions.
-Yeah, we probably got a bit biased during Brainerd-Apple Valley, with everyone on our crew being small-town outstate guys (Osakis, Lake Park-Audubon, and St. Michael-Albertville before the population boom got to the school systems). However, some of the bias was understandable, given that they gave AV all they wanted for ¾ of the game.
-I’ve ragged on Eden Prairie and Lakeville North plenty in this spot over the years for being schools that need reminding that the winter sports season doesn’t end when their hockey team is knocked out of the playoffs. I’m going to continue doing so until their students actually show up for the state tournament. Also, you can add Edina to that list. Their student “support” was pathetic.
-The Thursday session of the Class A state tournament at Williams Arena is always an interesting blend of people. During the course of the day, I saw letter jackets and sports gear from all four corners of the state (Cook County, Kittson Central, Hills-Beaver Creek, and Caledonia).
-Park Center-Edina was equal parts PC being the real deal and Edina laying a stinker for the ages. Seriously? Twenty (20) percent from the field? No one on press row can remember that rancid of a performance this late in the tournament.
-If the MSHSL can use a multiplier down when it comes to free and reduced lunches, they can use a multiplier up when it comes to private schools. After review, Cretin-Derham Hall is the only metro private school that’s in 4A. Holy Family, Totino-Grace, Blake, Breck, Hill-Murray, Holy Angels, Benilde-St. Margaret’s, DeLaSalle, and St. Thomas Academy are all 3A and would do just fine in 4A. Both of the combatants in the 1A title game would have no problem in 2A. Minnehaha Academy, Providence Academy, Rochester Lourdes, St. Cloud Cathedral, and Winona Cotter are 3A schools and should be placed accordingly. I’ll also give credit to Southwest Minnesota Christian for having their fans come out in force for all three of their games.
-We suspected that between star power (Reid Travis, the Acey cousins, and Tyus Jones) and title game droughts (Apple Valley and PC had never been there, and Austin hasn’t won a title since 1958), we were going to get a big crowd for the night session on Saturday. We were not disappointed. 13,855 was the attendance, the largest such crowd since the four-class split.
- After 23 state tournaments and 10 title games, Jim Weinzeirl from Park Rapids is retiring from working the state tournament. His sons, Scott and Ryan, have worked multiple tournaments and title games themselves. A while ago, after Jim told the powers that be that this would be his last tournament, they offered to put him and the boys on a final. I thought that this was a very nice move. I’ve ragged on the MSHSL a lot, but I also give credit where it’s due, and it’s certainly due here. So when you saw Jim Weinzeirl, Scott Weinzeirl, and Ryan Weinzeirl on your screen, it was not a typo.
-For those of you advocating for a shot clock, what good will that do in high school? The only team that got to a big lead by running, then effectively switched to a full stall is DeLaSalle in the title game. I’ve seen that move backfire far more often than I’ve seen it work.
-The fact that Prep45 does not stream the basketball quarterfinals works well for us at MSBN, but it seems that they’re stealing money from the League. You would think this would come up in the contract negotiations.
-Also, the Target Center has to get a neutral floor for these events. Way too many players were spotting up for 3-pointers from the wrong line.
Another season of high school basketball in the books. Are we ever going to get to spring sports?
