USC is releasing offensive tackle recruit Seantrel Henderson from his national letter of intent, coach Lane Kiffin said Tuesday.

Henderson, an incoming freshman and one of the nation's top recruits, signed with USC after initially delaying past national signing day over concerns that the program might face NCAA sanctions. That has since happened.

Henderson also strongly considered Miami, Ohio State and Minnesota during the recruiting process.

Kiffin could have kept Henderson bound to his national letter, requiring him to either report or enroll elsewhere and pay his own way for a year before being eligible in 2011. Instead, Kiffin and USC are essentially allowing Henderson to enroll at any school immediately and be eligible to play as early as this season.

USC is still hopeful that Henderson will decide to enroll at USC.

"We are releasing Seantrel Henderson out of his national letter of intent with zero penalties and no restrictions. Seantrel has been great through the whole process and we wish him the best of luck with his decision," Kiffin said.

USC could have limited the other schools Henderson could pursue, such as eliminating schools within the Pac-10 or schools USC will face in the next few seasons. Instead, Kiffin took the approach that he wanted players on campus who know they want to be Trojans.

Henderson, who is listed at 6-foot-7 and 295 pounds, played for Cretin-Derham High School in Minnesota. Henderson was ranked by ESPN's Scouts Inc. as the top offensive tackle in the nation and the No. 8 player in the ESPNU 150.

Kiffin landed 15 four- and five-star recruits, for the seventh-best class in the nation according to ESPN's Scouts Inc. Joe Schad is a college football reporter for ESPN.

Alright, so I'd like to see him come to Minnesota, but realistically, I don't want to have my heart broken again so let's just say for argument's sake, the Gophers are out.

Everyone is saying Miami is the kid's pick. For real?

If I'm Seantrel after this mess, I'm probably looking to Ohio State and Jim Tressel. OSU runs a clean program and Tressel is just about as much the opposite of Lane Kiffin as you can find in the NCAA.

Randy Shannon runs an extremely clean program as well down in Coral Gables as well.

Being that you have "made your mind up" based on unsubstaniated and unvarified/unconfirmed information it appears you have proven my initial point. My man, you give far to much credit to those that write, post and blog. I can not tell you how many times I have spoke to the media and they have twisted or misrepresented what I said.

Do you honestly believe it wasn't in Kiffin's best interest to guild the lilly when telling SH what the probable outcome would be in regard to the NCAA's investigation? Not that it has been cofirmed anywhere that Sean (his dad) actually said this but could you please tell me what is wrong with wanting your son to be a star and a brand name? We are early, very early, way too early but what would be wrong with his father serving as his agent?

Alright, here's something I've never really understood. Does every school have the same academic standards or are some schools easier to get into than others...I remember reading stuff on how gopher recruits ended up backing out here and going elsewhere because they couldn't academically make it here...

Interesting question, USC and Miami are both private. I wonder if that isn't somehow impacting Henderson's choices.

I'm sure that's true, but why do MN fans have a favorable impression of you despite the misrepresentations? I have eyes, I've seen all that's public, and it makes the writers, posters and bloggers seem accurate. Totally? Not close, but the impression and the rumors match.

Nothing is wrong with wanting your kid to be a star, perfectly common. Using your son to maybe secure a music career? That would not be ok (i have no idea if that's true). As to serving as his agent. How is that acting in your son's best interests? What does Sean know about being an agent? Does he have a college degree? Any legal knowledge? Give me one positive to his being involved to that level in his son's career? Give me a few examples of parents managing their kids careers that have turned out well?

Two things:

1. How do you know he has no experience?
2. How do you become an agent if according to you one must have experience first?

Note: Plenty of agents (most) open their own shop without ever having had a client.

Be it good or bad folks impression of me is based on considerably more information than Sean and Sentrel. I have thousands of posts all over the internet. People can read my own words and make their mind up for themselves.

What does Sean know? The real question is what do YOU know about Sean to decide what he can or can not do or what is in the best interest for his son? Further more you are assuming that all agents have a college degree (they don't, it has only been a requirement the last 20 years I think) or legal knowledge (helpful but not required).

Positive to being involved? He would look after his son's best interest (okay stop laughing).

Eamples of parents successfully managing their childrens career? Too many to name but here are a few. Ted Ginns father is his agent. Brandy from Mohesha and her brother Ray from Kim Kardashian (I would have worked the video camra also), Brittney Spears, Joe Jackson and the Jackson Five (Michael was black when Joe was his manager)......okay never mind but that doesn't mean there can't be a first!

No Miami play have been arrested since Randy Shannon has taken over the program.

1) Educated guess. If you can provide data contrary to that I will accept I am wrong.
2) I will take your word for this but it seems odd to me.
 

Way too many distractions in south beach to derail him, Ohio St seems like the better pick IMO.
 

I am all for Miami. If you can't go to my #1 school then I am happy with him going to my #2 favorite football program. Besides, there is going to be distractions wherever you go, its how you handle it that matters.

I'm not pretending to be a close, personal friend of the Henderson's (or a friend at all)- but what I can say is I've interviewed Seantrel for the past 3 years, his Dad a few times in the past year, and I actually used to work with his Mom (by work with, she was a customer, and I was a sales rep, so I wasn't a co-worker) almost 10 years ago. What I can say, is in none of my interactions with them, have any of them tried to turn their son into a star in my eyes. I can also tell you - those people were getting 50+ calls a days from people trying to interview them (I was one of them) - not once, did they ever call me or try to command attention. I'm guessing this whole manipulation of the media you claim...is really them just responding to a few of the many requests they were getting...I doubt they were making out calls.

Honestly, I don't get this hatred for Seantrel - yeah, it sucks he didn't like the U, and man, would I have loved him to come here. However, he never led MN on, he was very elusive when talking about schools. When I spoke to him, he tried to be very political, but I picked up on his love for USC - which is why I said from day one, I thought he'd go there. I also sensed a lot of interest for OSU - and unfortunately, I never got to talk to him after his Miami visit.

So you can have your mind made up - I know that no one will be able to change that, but I have my mind made up as well. And unlike many on this board, I think the kid is a beast - and he will certainly amount to something if he stays healthy and works hard.

Would be nice if he came here, but ESPN reported he was in Miami last weekend and they have a full ride waiting for him...
 

good post...i wouldn't say he didn't like the U, since i saw him multiples times in dinkytown having fun...it's just that he's set on the league and that's "easier" at a big time program

Have to disagree with this point, I understand you have had more contact with the situation than most, but if he truly didn't lead the U on, there could have been a quick, no thanks, not going to happen, please stop recruiting me. Brewster can move on and spend time on other prospects. This could have been done 3 years ago, it was quite obvious he not only lead on the U, but the local fans in order to quell any bad feelings locally. BS. Be a man.

A complete mess of a situation has been made of his life due to his parents involvement.
Honestly he would have been better off letting Coach Scanlon from Cretin handle his recruitment, or even some trusted family freind. Anyone outside of influence, then the decision could have been his and his alone. His father's agenda is quite clear: Ride the kid to the NFL and get paid so I can start rapping at age 40.:rolleyes:

Hatred for Seantrel? Where are you getting that in my posts? I'm bummed like any fan he didn't pick the hometown, but I never thought he was coming here, and I don't think he owes it to anyone to do anything but whatever he feels is in his best interests. I only have a dislike of the dad, spawned when I saw the local piece on Fox 9 where the dad was standing in the front row shouting "great block!" after every play with a Seantrel sweatshirt on (complete embarrassment), and reinforced with every rumor I see. It's probably not fair to believe in rumors, but man this guy has MORE than his fair share. It's hard to believe that ALL of them are untrue and he's just a good father doing what's best for his son. I agree that Seantrel is a beast, but beasts can bust too, and all the other stuff this kid is having to deal with are not helping his career.

How do you know when he made his decision not to go to Minnesota? Maybe the Gophers were always in the running until late in the process. You're only speculating and saying it as fact.
 

speculation: Academic concerns at SC kept him from SC summer classes and Fall 10 enrollment. This may have 0 to do with the coach.

Agree 100%. Remember, he also visited Iowa [throws up in mouth a little] back in November. Was that just subterfuge also?

Seantrel had stated many times that one of the big things in his decision was his relationship with the position coach, and he had nothing but great things to say about Coach Davis.

And to Section2: "Hatred for Seantrel? Where are you getting that in my posts?" I have reread the post by GopherLady a couple of times and can't figure out why you think that post had anything to do with you specifically.

I would still welcome him here with open arms.

We certainly weren't in the top 3, the article about his trip to NY to announce with Lemming made it clear the kid wanted nothing to do with Minnesota. Fine then, say it up front and be strong about your decision is all I'm asking.

I'm not even blaming the kid, and I don't hate him. I do hate the way he allowed himself to be controlled and influenced and the way his recruitment was handled. Example A1 of how not to handle the recruitment process.
