Take it easy on HS kids .. Campbell is a student athlete

Hi All,
I guess it's true you guys on these web forums are really tough and judgmental on HS kids. Unlike you all I am going to be upfront with my agenda. I have intimate knowledge of his achievements and his curriculum.

Although this young man's ACT score is low -do you know he took his ACT his sophomore year the morning of a 7 on 7 tournament? (He had yet another standout performance that day.) If you are being pragmatic and you now have offers from Stanford and Vanderbilt would you take the ACT again?

Here is a little more info before you downplay and belittle a HS junior's academic record. Do you know the HS the kid attends is a very prestigious prepatory school in Philadelphia. Do you know the school ranks high in academics annually in the entire state of PA? Did you know the kid only gets A's in math and science and he takes all AP level classes? Did you know the kid takes Honors spanish?

You guys should spend a little less time judging and applaud the fact that a HS junior wants to be a student athlete and has a goal right now to play Div 1 football.

Finally his older brother attends cornell and his other brother attended georgetown.
You all should be happy that he is considering your fine state school of Minnesota.

Keep in mind that the posters criticizing Campbell's future goals and/or academic preparation were a very small minority of posters on this board. If you read through all the comments, you will see that the vast majority of Gopher fans found those comments out of line and classless. Without knowing what type of player this kid is, he seems to have solid future goals and is looking at football as an avenue to lead a fulfilling life, and those type of student-athletes are too few in D-1 sports. I imagine the Gophers would be quite fortunate to have a young man of this character grace our campus and football team. Don't let the negativity of a few anonymous posters sway your opinion of our fine university and state.

Thank you DUMBGOPHERS. Always good to have more information. I didn't realize he had taken the ACT as a sophomore. I thought it may have been as a junior, which still should have given him some measure of slack in this room. Sounds like a great kid who would be a real asset to the University of Minnesota on the field and in the classroom.

Thanks for posting. Some of the responses in this thread were among the worst I've ever seen on this board.

I find it interesting that advocates of higher education, or education at any level, would criticize anyone for aspiring to learn more. I welcome this student-athlete to the U of M, hope he attends school here, and helps to raise the quality of students and learning here.

Since you have called me out by name, I will address your statements point-by-point.

dpodoll68 sir this seems to be much bigger than football for you as you have used this forum to illustrate your educational prowess, and not once seemed like a fan of the Gophers.
I find it humorous to think that someone who not only took the time to seek out, but frequently posts on and has been reading for years, a website devoted specifically to Gopher athletics could not be seen as a fan. Not to mention the fact that I am an alumnus, have been a season ticket holder for several years, and have attended multiple games every year since 1998. Well played.
yet someone who was bullied by the jocks in your youth, and your means of getting back was to show them up in the classroom.
I guess maybe my school just wasn't as cliquish as yours, but we didn't have "jocks" and "nerds" and "geeks" and "motorheads" and whatever other label you want to place on people. I am certainly no athlete, but I was a 4-year letterwinner in football, 3-year in basketball, 2-year in track & field, and played Legion baseball (as there was no HS baseball in SD when I was in school). 0-for-2.
Now that someone possesses not only athletic superiority, but a high level of intelligence threatens to potentially invade your world
Now intelligence is certainly subjective, but a 22 does not constitute "high level" in my book. 0-for-3.
you feel the need to harp on one issue that you clearly have done NO research to support.
Actually, if you will refer to my previous posts, I mentioned that his score was below average for his own state...not exactly something to go around bragging about. Not to mention that there is a high correlation between ACT and MCAT scores, indicating that without substantial improvement, the likelihood is that he will not have the credentials to be accepted into med school. 0-for-4.
What are you defending... Med School, or the idea that the athletes, which you seem to despise, may perform highly on all cylinders minimizing your accomplishments.
I'm not trying to "defend" anything, merely suggesting that the kid get better advisors if he thinks that the type of work that garnered a 22 will get him into med school. 0-for-5.
Get over yourself... Bush was the President of the United States, and with your arrogance, Im certain you voted for him
I'm not entirely sure what this has to do with the price of rice in China, but if you must know, I absolutely despise Bush and everything he for which he stands. I think he's the worst president in the history of our great country, and has had everything in his life handed to him on a silver platter because of who his father and grandfather are/were. You can tell quite easily that I'm an advocate of meritocracy, and Bush is about as polar opposite as one can get from that ideology. 0-for-6.
so there goes your argument that someone with limited education and test scores can persevere and overcome the educational and STANDARDIZED odds that you so adamantly believe in...
If Campbell's looking for a role model, I can suggest literally thousands better than Dubya. But I guess that's your business. 0-for-7. Thanks for playing.

Well people I happen to know this kid personally, and am very close to his situation. Consider me his handler if you will. He took the ACTs at the end of his sophomore year, and is prepared to take them again in what is currently his Junior campaign at a prestigious school here in Philly in CHA. Not only is he a dedicated and amazing athlete, he is a very conscientious student and very active in his school and community. His older brother, Rashad is currently a freshman at Cornell University, and received substantial playing time this last season, and will have a shot at the starting spot as a sophomore. He is receiving alot of attention from major programs as he has fielded offer from Vanderbilt, Stanford, and Syracuse as of late. Yes he is a minority, and is proud of his background and culture, and is an inspiration to alot of young African American children as well as athletes wanting to make the most out of life and sport. dpodoll68 sir this seems to be much bigger than football for you as you have used this forum to illustrate your educational prowess, and not once seemed like a fan of the Gophers, yet someone who was bullied by the jocks in your youth, and your means of getting back was to show them up in the classroom. Geesh, he's a kid.

BRAVO SIR!
