Gophers need to name football coach soon, Tracy Claeys says

Tracy C. doesn't have an agent, says he won't need one.
UM has ALL the leverage now. Claeys (again w/out an agent) isn't
going to get any offers near HC of UM.
UM, however, could wait to see what interest there is in the position,
and "trade up".

I'll guarantee you that if the offer is extended to Claeys, he'll have people advising him in contract negotiations.

There have been such highly regarded coaches just knocking on the door waiting to get here. Have you not seen who we have tried to hire? Hoke? Edsal(sp)?

Tracy is by far the best candidate that happens to be right in front of our nose and the longer we wait the more inept our administration looks.

Not saying we give him a 8 year deal but shoot 3 years with a University buy out option would be acceptable

We could follow your line of thinking and then maybe we'll be back in another 40 years?

Or, we may never get back, period.

I get it. Claeys is stable and safe and is probably going to get the job. But don't pretend this coaching staff is setting the world on fire. They're not.

No says they are. Many of us want to see this play out. It wasn't long ago I saw gophers get shredded by coyotes. I want to get to rose bowl in my life but I realize it's a process. Starting over every 3-4 years won't get it done

Trust me, there are more than a few in this thread alone.

I hope one of the conditions if he gets the job is Limegrover is sent packing...2nd and 9 and 3rd and 7 are his favorite down and distances

Here is my two cents:

1. Claey's has no better option, so there is no need rush into hiring ...because of that.
2. The U is going to lose recruits regardless because of Kill retirement...again no need rush.
3. No potential coach worth hiring is going to take this job without a AD in place...(Claey being the exception)....no need to rush or hire until AD is hired.
4. There is nobody on staff at the U qualified to hire a football coach.
5. A good AD candidate will want to hire the football coach...not be saddled with one.
6. With all that being said, I would hire Claey now with a non painful two year buyout. Why? This staff and their families don't deserve to be uprooted. They have earned an opportunity (albeit short one) to prove they can complete the job.

Even Limegrover and his 0.9yards per play on 1st down doesn't deserve to be uprooted?

Exactly!
This is spot on. I love where we've come, but the AD with or without Kill is the decision maker period.

Seems like the only reason people want Claeys is to keep the recruits.
Well if the recruits want to leave on account of what has happened, and interim coach isn't good enough for them, that we don't need them.
Either you want to come to the U or you don't. If East Carolina is a better option, good luck to you. Someone else will be happy to take your scholarship.

This AD angle is way over-rated. AD's also come and go. They inherit football coaches and see how it's working and not demand that they be able to send the coach packing or refuse to consider accepting. You don't think well qualified people will refuse the bucks, power, and prestige of being an AD at a BIG school? A narrative gets established and is taken for gospel without some people taking a step back. Besides, if Mega-Tongue was still around, things would be dandy because you could certainly trust his judgement.

Look at it from a potential coaches perspective, the best candidates have multiple job offers. Why would you take a job when you have no idea who your boss will be.? When your boss is hired he will not be held responsible for your failure, therefore he will not be hesitant to fire you....especially if a candidate becomes available that he likes better.

Many Gopher fans seem to be forgetting TC is credited with putting together a pretty successful defense that has slowed down some high-powered offenses on a national stage (TCU in consecutive years, among others). Don't be surprised if Illinois enters the fray, since the new interim AD Kowalczyk has a significant and historical relationship with the Gopher staff. Whether Illinois is a better option is certainly debatable, but it may at least give them options to consider.

Great point; the gophers secondary coach is the guy I would be concerned about losing.

Not sure about that. No way would a sitting AD who had hired Tubby fired him after he won a Tournament game over UCLA. But Mega-Tongue (and most ADs) want to make a signature hire. Mega-Tongue and Ellis fancied themselves as basketball gurus and jumped at the chance to send Tubby packing. A new AD could see Pitino as vulnerable heading into Season 4 with the likelihood of no Tournaments yet, so that could be a position to target, but I agree with Sportsfan, that most desirable head coaches (sans Claeys since he's here and knows the lay of the land) will be very hesitant to come here without a permanent AD. That being said, I fully expect Claeys to get the full time job very soon.

Go Gophers!!

I think many people think he can get the job done. The issue for some is if they dick around for months and then end up hiring him anyways. Why not get it done now? If they feel he is the right man for the job, then no reason to wait.

The negotiations with Claeys should be simple. This is the best option that he will have to be a head coach in a major conference. He's been a big part of implementing the system that's had some success. He wants to be here. He has enough of a resume to merit a standard coaching contract, but he doesn't deserve the same money that Kill was making. He's unlikely to find a job where he'd be able to keep the current staff together at their current salaries. I'm guessing that's important to him.

Claeys is the best option the U has at this juncture. There is no permanent AD and there won't be one anytime soon. There is no one in the athletic department with the knowledge or experience to make hiring a new coach anything more than a crap shoot. Each side has some leverage, but really not too much.

So he signs on for 4-5 years at a significant bump in pay and the assistants all stick around at whatever they are making now, plus a small bump. Sawvel gets a bigger bump as he's promoted to D Coordinator. The buyout for Claeys will be relatively modest, but not inappropriately so given his lack of experience as a head coach. The money saved on salaries can be used to go after a higher profile AD who will then have a year or two to evaluate the staff and the progress made.

Not sure but you might be agreeing with me (but then again, I am easily confused since I have have grey hair and don't stand the whole damn game). A head coach is most critical now. You have a candidate right now that has done an admirable audition. Waiting until everything is settled so you can try to hire a great AD seems stupid. One, my point with Mega-Tongue is there is no guarantee you're going to get a great AD. You get one and by that time a lot of the base has been eroded with the football program because of the recruiting angle. That will make it that much harder to hire the right football coach. Those "desirable" coaches are also going to have choices. It's a crap shoot with them also. Look at how many coaches Notre Dame, Michigan, Texas, Nebraska, and USC have missed on in the last decade. They supposedly have the right AD, the reputation, and the resources. Not a great situation the U is in but it is what it is.

Yep, I think we're on the same page.

Very good take on the situation and could easily see it playing out this way.

ADs are the power players in collegiate athletics.

I'm so irritated at this point I'm kind of hoping he beats Iowa and Illinois then turns the Gophers down and takes the whole staff to Illinois. It would serve Kaler right.

We know nothing about what is going on. For all we know it is pretty much a done deal, just ironing out the details.
