Interim head football coach Tracy Claeys said Thursday that the University of Minnesota needs to pick a permanent head coach soon if the Gophers don't want recruits to start looking elsewhere.

"If it gets past the middle of November, I think you are going to start to see some problems," Claeys said on KFXN-FM.

Claeys said the next few weeks is when recruits schedule visits to schools and coaches prep for on-the-road recruiting in December.

Claeys replaced Jerry Kill as the Gophers' coach on Oct. 28 when Kill stepped down for health reasons. Claeys wants the job after being Kill's defensive coordinator the past 21 seasons, including four-plus years at Minnesota.

Claeys insisted that he wasn't trying to put pressure on University President Eric Kaler and interim athletics director Beth Goetz.

"If it was something that they put off and said, 'We will really address it when we get closer to the end of November,' then I think it will be tough on everybody," Claeys said. "I've been assured it's moving forward and they are going to make that decision as soon as they can."

Go Gophers!!

yes, we already have a recruit who is taking an OV somewhere else because of the transition. Many more will follow if this isn't shored up asap. Not to mention that we have a great shot of landing every recruit that visited on Saturday if/when we name Claeys the HC.

What he says is true but it comes across as self promotion given his public statements of wanting to be the next head coach. He should have others making these kind of statements.

Like one of the other leaders in the athletic dept?

Who is the recruit?

No one else is talking, so he is the one being asked the questions. Media has to ask, but all he can really say is the truth. "I want the job and the longer it takes, there will be consequences."

This. The headline should read, "When asked..."

Tell Prexy K to get off the pot...quit the delay...and hire TC and his STAFFERS by midnight tonight. What are you Prexy K? You have got investigations going on all around you Step up to the plate and get this Coaching thing and the AD thing put to bed NOW, before the regents decide they have to put you on a paid administrative leave while they sort out all of this Title IX stuff...the former new nowood mess and how could you even THINK about sending my Gopher Football Program into Columbus without a head coach under contract? You are looking awfully weak Prexy K. Man up...man.

well said. and concise.

Claeys was not DC during his 6-year stint at Saginaw Valley, but facts aren't really that important, I guess. As far as whether or not he should be saying it, or if it's "self promoting," shouldn't someone who is knowledgeable about the subject be speaking? It sounds like this administration could use all the help they can get to make the best decision.

Tracy Claeys talking about time is really precious. You needed to SNAP THE BALL sooner Tracy. I honestly can't believe we have posters who can't see through this. Odds are very strong that no available job will be filled by the middle of November. Essentially this is Tracy Claeys saying hire me while there are no other available candidates. I have very little doubt that Tracy Claeys will be named the coach going forward because of the AD situation and a general lack of faith in all decision makers at the U until someone gives me a reason to believe in them. It's amazing to me that someone who just botched their job in epic fashion and is currently part of a staff that is 1-6 in it's last 7 games against fellow power 5 schools thinks he's in position to pressure anyone to give him anything.

That said, give him a 1 year deal disguised as a 5 year deal (as soon as possible depending on job posting requirements and such) and get on to the business of hiring an AD.

This post is precious.

Ok, I think we're pretty clear on where you stand. You're glad Kill is gone and if you had your way Claeys and the rest would be gone, too. They just can't perform to your standards. Hiring an AD is what we need most of all. Interesting perspective, backed up by some understandable reasons. I hope you're not disappointed when this staff leads the Gophers to the B1G title next year.

I agree with him 100%.

Give him a 22 year deal if you need to, as long as it's really only a one year deal.

Let's go game by game and have a GH poll to decide if he gets another. One-year deals affect recruiting, too. What part of this don't you comprehend? If you want a different coach, I'm ok with that. But, the whole brick-by-brick philosophy is a total, long-term transformation of this program. If I understand the history correctly, it's been several decades spent mostly as a B1G patsy. Meanwhile, at least in my lifetime, Michigan and OSU have been perennial contenders. I have a theory that if you've wallowed in ineptitude for decades, it takes a long run of contention to change the perception and culture.

Claeys made a comment last year that I took to mean we were physically more talented than Michigan. Did the hiring of Harbaugh totally change their personnel? Michigan's remarkable turnaround is partly due, IMO, to the tradition the program has built over the last five decades. The RichRod & Hoke experiments didn't work, but it's still Michigan. If Minnesota wants to stop moving the mountain with a teaspoon, committing to this staff seems the most prudent strategy.

He may appear unpolished, but you have to admire his candor. Jerry Kill has already said that Tracy Claeys should be made the permanent coach publicly.

"I've asked Tubby Smith if he wanted to coach football, but he's declined," Maturi quipped. "But we're out here to find a Tubby Smith. We're out here to find somebody that people can recognize, people have confidence in, and people are going to bring instant credibility and notoriety to the football program."

Yes let's go find Tubby Smith instead of TC

Perfect. TC, players, and recruits will never notice or know the difference. Brilliant! Maybe a $0 buyout. TC won't know what hit him.

why did he have to say this in public? He may think it and talk internally about it but advertising in the public is bush league. No other teams looking for coaches will even come close to naming one my mid DEc to Jan 1st. There is no guarantee he will keep the commits we have anyway.

The lawyers on both sides have to get together and iron out a contract. Too bad they just can't get together with a hand shake.

What can't we see through? I can see through someone conveniently combining parts of two different seasons to help prove their point. It's an easy way to ignore that this staff was 5-3 in conference play last year. I think all the big ten teams qualify as power 5. Maybe Claeys shouldn't get the job because he's 0-1 all time against power 5 schools?

Correction...he actually has wins against power 5 as interim coach, to better suit your argument we should say he's 0-1 in his last 1 game.

So obvious, wonder if there aren't legal issues doing this without a search.

Christ almighty I missed you Wrenny. All I had to read was Prexy K and I knew who it was. If sorb would just come back and comment, my day would be complete.

Don't they usually just start with a memorandum of understanding and then in the following months the lawyers hammer out the details of the contract? In any case I don;t believe that there is a correct template to follow in hiring a coach. UNLV has tried the successful elder statesman coach (John Robinson), the hot assistant (Mike Sanford), the hot young head coach (Bobby Hauck), and have now tried the super successful high school coach (Tony Sanchez). The first 3 failed and we shall see about the 4th. There are obvious differences between UNLV and the U and what each needs right now. That being said I think that Claeys is as good of choice as any.

Jerry Kill reiterated his wish that the university hire Tracy Claeys as permanent head coach on KSTP TV tonight. "Why change" (all the good things that have come to the football program so far)?
