Coach Jerry Kill – despite being disappointed with the bowl loss to Missouri – sounded upbeat about the current team, recruiting, and the future of the program.
The first questions were asked by Dave Mona.

1) Dave asked Coach Kill for his thoughts on the loss to Missouri: Kill replied, “It’s been tough . . . one of the toughest losses (in Kill’s long career) . . . Game decided by five to six situations . . . (Missouri) out executed (us).”

On a positive note, Kill said: “Kids played hard (in bowl game) . . . Great run with the seniors – they’ve accomplished a lot.”

2) Dave cited a comment about Mitch Leidner’s leadership that was given by Isaac Fruechte, “First player at practice:” Kill sounding positive and upbeat regarding Leidner’s ability and his future at quarterback: “Our kids understand how good Mitch will be.” In the loss to Missouri, (Mitch) “Threw the ball effectively.”

Kill spoke highly of the Tigers defensive ends. According to Kill, he hasn’t seen a team with two outstanding defensive ends on the field at the same time, as Missouri had in the Citrus Bowl: “Best defensive ends since I’ve been coaching.” As a result, Mitch had a ball stripped that led to a fumble and another when he was "hit hard."

3) Dave brought up Missouri’s successful onside kick to open the second half: “Reminds me of what we did to Iowa,” replied Kill, “perfect execution.”

4) Sid asked if Kill was surprised that Maxx Williams decided to forego another year with Gophers and opted to put his name in the upcoming NFL Draft: Kill quickly answered: “Nah . . . I visited with the family . . . Gave all the information that we can (assessing his chances at the next level) . . . Realistically, you plan for those things (players leaving early) . . . Excited for him and his family.”

Kill also acknowledged that when a player does well and leaves school early for the NFL, it (perception) benefits the program in recruiting.

5) Sid asked what the tight end position will look like next year: “Feel very good,” said Kill. He then cited three players that will be vying for the starting position. He sounded excited with two players in particular: “Jerry Gibson – 6’4 235 and can run, (can play) receiver, tight end and H-back . . . Duke Anyanwu will be a great player.” He also mentioned Nate Wozniak at tight end.

He finished optimistically, “Plus we’ll have some very good wide outs.” He was referring to redshirt receivers that he has been trumpeting on recent shows.

6) Sid asked if Leidner had been recruited as a tight end: Kill said he was recruited as a quarterback, a position he played in high school. He also said Duke Anyanwu was recruited as a quarterback; however, he’s now a tight end.

He closed the question saying they recruit the best players they can and develop them and build them up in the weight room.

7) Talking about redshirt prospects for the squad in 2015, other than the three wide receivers mentioned earlier, Kill cited Jerry Gibson, running backs, Rodney Smith, Jeff Jones, Berkley Edwards and Roderick Williams. He sounded excited when he mentioned the running backs and Jerry Gibson.

He also referenced the fact that a lot of freshmen saw the field on the defensive side of the ball, and he closed, “Excited. We’ll be a better team next year.”

8) Dave asked how many recruits will sign this year: “We’ll have 25 scholarships,” replied Kill. He also said they plan to sign another athletic tight end and that they’re looking at two potential recruits.

9) Dave brought up the topic of recruiting, the high school all-star games in Florida, and the benefit of playing in Florida and in a January 1 bowl game: “No question,” said Kill, (high school) head coach coaches came to the practices . . . (National attention) Gives us a chance to add good players.”

10) Sid asked if the coaches plan to add another player that could be available for spring drills: Kill told Sid that they need to be in school (second semester) in order to be able to practice in the spring. He also said he doesn’t expect to sign another recruit that could enter school in January.

11) Dave asked about Cody Poock’s availability at linebacker next season: Kill said Poock has three years of eligibility and has been practicing for a long time, and he would’ve helped the team in Orlando.
Kill’s final comment in answering Mona’s query: “Defensively, lose three good players . . . got some back (that) were injured . . . Our future is very good!”

12) Sid brought up the topic of next year’s schedule: Kill responded, “TCU may be ranked one or two, will be in the top four.” He added, “This year was challenging down the stretch . . . We’ve gained some respect because who we beat.”

13) Dave asked about the Michigan hire, Jim Harbaugh: Kill didn’t have much to say about the hire, except, “Know his dad very well.” He knows Jim’s father who was coaching at Western Kentucky when Kill was the head coach at Southern Illinois University.”

14) Coach Kill was asked, again, about next year’s squad: “We’ll be better next year . . . gained confidence . . . talent wise we’ll have a ton back . . . Mitch, a year older,” said Kill with confidence.

15) Sid asked about the center position next year: Kill said several players gained experience this year, including Alex Mayes and Brian Bobek, and Jon Christenson is back from surgery. Christenson played in the Citrus Bowl. He also sounded positive about a recruit (no name given) that will be coming in.

Go Gophers!!

Yeoman's work again, DL65, much appreciated.

Hope we get a surprise or two in recruiting...looking forward to spring ball too.

Great work as usual!

#15 should read Connor Mayes and the unnamed recruit is Tyler Moore. Tyler Moore said a while back that he was recruited as the center of the future.

As usual I appreciate what you do.

Addendum:

Dave Mona raised the topic of transfers. Coach Kill said he didn't know of any transfer requests or pending requests at this time. He said announcements of player(s) transfer(s) to other schools usually occurs a few days after the bowl season.

Go Gophers!!

This is why we lost. Not the nonsense any of you gopherholers were posting.

While that's true, if Kill really didn't take any responsibility for the loss, remember that next year after every win, because it's all about execution and coaching has nothing to do with it.

Hard to believe that Kill didn't take some responsibility. He always does and maybe he will at the Press Conference or Jerry Kill Show if there are ones scheduled for this week. Not hard to believe that many posters next year will be willing to give him the credit for all wins and give Limegrover and the players blame for every loss.

Bet many the posters on Gopherhole who are "complaining about the complainers" will eagerly give Kill and Company the majority of the credit. The same way Mitch's fumbles were all on him and the passing numbers were meaningless.

I think next years squad will be better than this years squad. I believe again we will be in the hunt for the division title. We lose a game to a very good Missouri and people act like the Gopher program is in shambles. I wish the season was starting tomorrow already.

You are so right. Remember when we lost to TCU and folks were saying we wouldn't win a B1G game? Remember when we lost to IL and folks were saying we wouldn't win another game? The overreaction and swings on a view of coach, player, or team from one week to the next, based on a single game, good or bad, on this site is so irrational.

Not to mention last year after the Iowa and Michigan losses they said we wouldn't win another game and Kill needed to go.

dear lord!! why do some people use so much hyperbole to prove a point??? find me one person that said this program is in shambles! just one, let alone "people" which would assume multiple people saying we're in shambles. people are frustrated that we were a bit sloppy against missouri. people were emotional after the loss, but yes we will hopefully be better next year. that's the goal, year over year improvement and we've had it every year under kill.

but don't resort to so much hyperbole. you are better than that.

who are "they?!" a few people? most "they" absolutely didn't say that.

Of course you do. We all do. But in fact, we have to wait another year for a chance to win a bowl game. We didn't just lose to a very good Missouri team. This was our 7th consecutive bowl game loss. Some of us are a little discouraged at that. We also lost to our most hated rival, Wisconsin, in the game before. Now, I'm still on board with Jerry Kill given that we took home a couple of important tophies. But it's not like there isn't reason for some glum faces on this board. We're all getting older. Some of us can't keep waiting another decade before we are relevant. We've already lost a couple generations of fans to the grave since the last team we were in the national conversation. Forgive our impatience.

Hard to see that with the losses we have to graduation and the NFL - both Michigan and Nebraska will be better and we play Ohio State in Columbus. Colorado State could be trouble, too.

We are in the same boat as the teams you listed except they all have new coaches.

Yeah and all the people who were saying after the Penn State victory last year that the Gophers wouldn't win another game? Uh, bad example. How about all the people who were saying that the 2014 Gophers were the best team in the last 30 plus years and they were going do many things that no Gopher team in 50 years had done?

They hammered the Hawkeyes. Lost to tOSU but put out a great effort so they would surely get the Axe back for the first time in 10 years wouldn't they? Nope. They'd surely beat a Missouri team though. It wasn't Alabama or Auburn or Georgia was it? They'd finally break the damn Bowl streaks and Kill's damn personal post season streak and win 9 games. NINE you hear me?

Nah, that didn't happen either, but we can still keep whining about it or pretending can't we?

It was a good year and through the Iowa game maybe it was a great year.

Wish it would have ended-up a great one though.

Being a Gopher fan is hard.

You know what else is hard? Getting up at 5:30 everyday to workout when you play for a team that just went 3-9 and lost 58-0 to Michigan. Doing this because your coaches told you that if you do, you'll be able to beat them. Believing this even though their guys were all America while you were just all state, their guys played in the Under Armor game while you played in a state high school all star game.

People need to lighten up. This team has gotten better and accomplished more each year under this staff. Celebrate the accomplishments of the seniors who put in the work to make it happen. Look forward to next year. Each year won't always be better than the last.

We have improved our either our Big Ten record, overall record or both every year since Kill has been here. Not much more you can ask at this point in time IMO.

Not sure if I've seen anyone say "Kill is the reason we won today". Almost everyone gives the players the most credit after a win.

But I have seen multiple times people say "Kill is the reason we lost today" or "This loss is 100% on Kill and the coaches."

It's almost never one or the other, and almost always a combination of the players and coaches regardless of the outcome.

Both Michigan and Nebraska will be at home next year and I don't know how you figure the huskers will be better. While I do think Michigan will be better, I still see them being about a 7 games and being about the same level as Iowa or Maryland this year. Especially if Morris is at QB. As we have said before CSU loses nearly 5,000 yards of offense next year plus there head coach and we weren't suppose to have a chance with OSU this year anyways so I don't know how much it matters that it is at the shoe next year either.

There was a very significant chunk of posters here that did not believe we would win another conference game after going 0-2. More than a few. And maybe not on
gopherhole but just from reading other teams boards, articles, comment secants etc. I would say that the national majority believed that It would be in Kill and the school's interest to step down after the leave of absence.

Harbaugh isn't an overnight quick fix guy, or hasn't been, but he'll have a lot of talent if they can find a qb. It will be a very tough schedule, but we can improve our record again if the team is better. Still all about the Oline to me.

Blah, blah, blah..... There is so much over simplification and over reaction from both sides.

Of course the team is getting better and most of the hard work is paying off. Yes, the plan is to put in the offense in the fourth year and we need to be patient, etc...

But, it is just very tough to take a loss to a team that was getting the sh!t kicked out of them by the U. Mizzou was running scared and had to resort to gimmick plays in order to stay with us in the first half. The frustration comes from the feeling that the coaches didn't lay it all out to win. Yes, there were execution errors like on the first long TD run, our LB ran out of his lane and left the hole wide open for the RB to take it to the house, etc... But those things can happen and it didn't seem like the coaches opened it up as much as they could have to win.

Now we have to listen to all the BS about how the U isn't any good yet, or that Mizzou was so much better of a team, etc...

I think a lot of the post-game reaction comes down to people being upset with a loss, and looking for someone to blame. Kill is the head coach, so he's the obvious target. Just to put this in perspective, I was at a HS BB game Saturday night, and stopped to talk to a fan I know - an older woman (in her 70's or 80's - don't know her exact age.) We talked about the Gopher game, and she said "that fumble on the punt return turned the whole game around." If Jones fields that punt cleanly, and the Gophers go down and score, would we be having multi-page threads dissecting Kill's too-conservative approach? I think not.

So glad Sid asked the hard hitting questions again. I especially am glad he asked Kill about stalling out the end of the lst half. Your journalism degree paid off there Sid.
