GopherHole's Sports Huddle Summary: Coach Jerry Kill - 1/04/15

I think a lot of the post-game reaction comes down to people being upset with a loss, and looking for someone to blame. Kill is the head coach, so he's the obvious target. Just to put this in perspective, I was at a HS BB game Saturday night, and stopped to talk to a fan I know - an older woman (in her 70's or 80's - don't know her exact age.) We talked about the Gopher game, and she said "that fumble on the punt return turned the whole game around." If Jones fields that punt cleanly, and the Gophers go down and score, would we be having multi-page threads dissecting Kill's too-conservative approach? I think not.

Probably not. Wonder what would have happened if Missouri would have scored a TD rather Boddy-Calhoun intercepting in the End Zone? Or even Wells picking that one off on the first drive. Would there be a multi-page thread exist dissecting Kill's "too-conservative approach" then. With people questioning what happened and people telling them to shut-up and just be happy about how things are?

Uh huh.

Football fans are never satisfied. It wasn't that long ago Kill would say after a loss that it was his fault. "I did not coach well enough." It didn't take long before those fans to got tired of that. Now when he doesn't say that it was his fault, they are upset at him for not taking the blame. Nothing a good public thrashing wouldn't cure! Lighten up people!

I am NOT telling people to "just be happy about how things are." I am just suggesting that, after a loss, you can point to any number of factors and situations that led to the loss. If the Gophs would have gotten a FG at halftime, would that have prevented Missouri from running for two long TD's in the second half? You can't pull one play, or even one sequence out of a game, and proclaim that "this is what cost us the game."

So you missed the meltdown huh? It wasn't pretty. Mobs never are.

Killjoy is right. This board was a dumpster fire after both TCU and IL. Overreaction - just as there is now. However, thinking back I wonder if it was the same situation back then that it is now - a handful of posters spewing the same crap over and over on each and every thread out there, whether or not the thread was originally on that, a related, or unrelated topic.

Oh - and thanks DL for posting the recap. Your contribution to GH is very much appreciated.

it's not only negative overreactions. just as many overreactions on the positive side. Those just aren't acknowledged.

1.)Not sure if I've seen anyone say "Kill is the reason we won today". Almost everyone gives the players the most credit after a win.

2.) But I have seen multiple times people say "Kill is the reason we lost today" or "This loss is 100% on Kill and the coaches."

It's almost never one or the other, and 3.)almost always a combination of the players and coaches regardless of the outcome.[/QUOTE]

We disagree on 1 and 2. You've never seen or remember any "Kill is why we're winning" posts. I don't remember any "This loss is a 100% on Kill" posts without a shot on Leidner in there somewhere.

We agree on 3 but Kill's share around here is always larger with the wins and smaller with the losses. He always takes his share of the blame after a loss. Here any question about him being responsible provokes an avalanche of "He is not!" posts.

Wonder why they never call him a liar.

Now look at Kill's record after 50 plus games. Take away 3 or 4 his teams ALWAYS wins when they are ahead or tied and NEVER wins when they are behind. That is not a small sample size. Taking that into account why does the very act of questioning his decisions bother people so much? Sure it gives the haters a chance to vent but interestingly enough nobody who whines about the complainers offers anything to refute it besides "he was afraid of falling further behind" ?

Me? I think they can hold a lead in the 2nd Half if they get it. The Mason "no defense" days are gone. The games they lose often come down to the Defense always having to be on the field. Others seem more worried about a potential margin of defeat then trying to win.

It's okay that they won't come right out and say it.

This was just posted a few days ago and it certainly isn't the only time someone has said it is 100% on Kill or the coaches.

Players make mistakes. I don't blame them. The coaches played this game not to lose, and they lost. This is 100% on Kill in my opinion. I'll never blame Mitch for physical mistakes. Kill got absolutely owned today. Owned. He should be embarrassed.

The difference is, Kill and Limegrover have been coaching for 20+ years. They shouldn't be making JV mistakes. This is why people are up in arms. They are paid a lot of money because we expect them to be close to perfect at what they do and they clearly were not that day.

On the other hand, 18-21 yr old players are expected to make some mistakes because they are not professionals. When players continually make mistakes, eg Marcus Jones inability to judge punts, it is on the coaches to either fix the problem or sit them for someone else. Is it a dogs fault it's a dog?
