It's time for this year's GopherHole Survey.

I want to thank the GopherHole Admins/Staff for allowing me to conduct this survey annually. I also want to credit Anderson8284, BleedGopher, GoAUpher, and GoldInDirt for the questions at the end of the survey. To keep the survey manageable, I had to omit a couple suggestions.

I hope you find the survey informative and fun as well as instructive for the Admins. The first part is demographic-related. The second part focuses on your thoughts about the GopherHole site. Third section questions are about your experiences and wishes as they relate to Gopher football and basketball.

My responses to the survey are as follows:

I. Demographics.

Age: 63. Gender: Male. # of years as a Gopher fan: 55. Minnesota Native: Yes.
Hometown: Detroit Lakes. Current Address: Knoxville, Iowa.
Post Secondary schools and degrees: Moorhead State College, BA, 1969.
Attend at least one Gopher football and/or basketball game per year: Yes, football.

II. GopherHole Site (Please be specific):

1. What do you like about the GopherHole site? The insights, humor, passion, diverse opinions and the lively discussions of its posters. I also enjoy the in-depth reports by GopherLady, cduff, parkinglotgopher, etc. I especially enjoyed the Where Are They Now segments last summer. I also like the many links that BleedGopher and other posters provide in their threads.

2. What do you dislike about GopherHole? The hijacking of threads, which often leads to petty bickering and negativity. Trolls are a problem at times (which can happen on a free message board).

3. What improvements or changes would you like to see implemented? More in-depth articles with the coaching staffs, players and former players. Also, features related to the upcoming opponents would be interesting. Lastly, I would like to see the many lurkers join the fun and several of the veteran posters that seemed to have taken a hiatus from the GopherHole forums rejoin us.

III. Fun Questions.

1. Your favorite football and/or basketball game that you attended: The Indiana football game in 1967. Minnesota bounced back from a big loss to Purdue the previous week (41-12) and defeated the Hoosiers in Memorial Stadium, 33-7. Most of Minnesota's points came in the second half and the straight pulls of Peppermint Schnapps after each successful play by the Gophers put a new perspective on the game. Indiana upset the Boilermakers the next week and the Gophers beat Wisconsin. Minnesota, Indiana, and Purdue shared the conference title. Alas, it was Minnesota's last conference championship.

2. Where have you attended Gopher football and/or basketball on the Road? Ames, Iowa and Iowa City for Gopher football and Iowa City for basketball.

3. Who do you attend Gopher games with (spouse, parent, child, friend(s), alone, etc.)? I've attended a lot of games with my wife, daughters and several times alone.

4. If possible, what non-conference opponent would you like to have on the Gopher schedule annually (football and/or basketball)? I'd like to see the Iowa State Cyclones on the football schedule. It would pit Big 10 against Big 12, four hour drive for the two schools which would be good for fans and reduced travel expenses for the athletic department.

3. What improvements or changes would you like to see implemented? See more general articles concerning gopher athletics. As a fan of all gopher sports, it would be nice to see an article or two pertaining to the lesser publicized sports.

1. Your favorite football and/or basketball game that you attended: Iowa at the dome, 2006. With a bowl game on the line, the Gophers beat the collapsing Hawkeyes and Drew Tate's last Big Ten game, 34-24.

1. What do you like about the GopherHole site? Gopher-centric reporting which you obviously won't find on ESPN or the other local media networks (KFAN). The banter, the updates you probably wouldn't get if you didn't read the forum, the recruiting talk, etc.

2. What do you dislike about GopherHole? The inevitable negativity that comes with mediocrity.

3. What improvements or changes would you like to see implemented? Can't think of any.

III. Fun Questions.

1. Your favorite football and/or basketball game that you attended: Football: Gophers vs. Air Force and Gophers vs. Michigan state this past year (I've only attended Gopher games the last two seasons). Basketball: Gophers vs. Wisconsin last year.

2. Where have you attended Gopher football and/or basketball on the Road? Football: @ Penn State last year. Basketball: None yet.

3. Who do you attend Gopher games with (spouse, parent, child, friend(s), alone, etc.)? Football--The band. Basketball-The group of people that always wait in line for 2 hours before doors open.

4. If possible, what non-conference opponent would you like to have on the Gopher schedule annually (football and/or basketball)? We're moving in that direction already, but the big name schools that allow us to score a national upset at some point in time. I'd like to see a Minnesota-Boise State matchup.

1. What do you like about the GopherHole site? Recruiting insights from some posters, articles and interviews, the sense of humor of most posters.

2. What do you dislike about GopherHole? When threads spin out of control into name-calling and off-topic arguments.

3. What improvements or changes would you like to see implemented? Keep up the good work.

1. Your favorite football and/or basketball game that you attended: First game at Williams Arena (vs. WI and the Hughes twins, '73?) to see Saunders as a frosh and Schaeffer (sp?) - boy could shoot. McHale's last home NIT game (the crowd wouldn't let Dutch sit him down, I think he came in for two or three brief stints but the crowd kept screaming "we want McHale!"; the Michael Bauer 3 to beat Georgia; any game that will be the next one :0).
No great football memories (bad timing or weak opponents on the wins and too many embarrassing losses)

2. Where have you attended Gopher football and/or basketball on the Road? Ames, Iowa for hoops when I was there for grad school.

3. Who do you attend Gopher games with (spouse, parent, child, friend(s), alone, etc.)? Brothers and my dad, spouse, good friends.

4. If possible, what non-conference opponent would you like to have on the Gopher schedule annually (football and/or basketball)? Iowa State, might work for BB but it would be tough for them to play two BigTen teams in non-con (since they'll never give up the Hawkeye game).

3. What improvements or changes would you like to see implemented? I love reading the articles that the Gopherhole staff put together. Would like to see more of those.

1. Your favorite football and/or basketball game that you attended: Opener against Air Force. Not to many memorable games during college that were positive.

2. Where have you attended Gopher football and/or basketball on the Road? Iowa City for football. 2006 Insight Bowl.

1. What do you like about the GopherHole site? Hands down the best place for gopher news, either player/coach interviews, GL's photos before the bank opened, recruiting rumors. I probably check this site, daily - too many times.

2. What do you dislike about GopherHole? I do wish there was less negativity on the board. Not that I disagree with it all the time, I watch the same games as everyone else and it can be disappointing and frustrating but posting about it ad nauseum doesn't do any good.

3. What improvements or changes would you like to see implemented? I really liked the recruit Q&A's. I can't remember many from this year but they were really fun to read them in the past.

1. Your favorite football and/or basketball game that you attended: Air Force opener.

2. Where have you attended Gopher football and/or basketball on the Road? Haven't been able to yet. Hopefully soon though.

3. Who do you attend Gopher games with (spouse, parent, child, friend(s), alone, etc.)? I had to sit alone this year at the bank but I'm hoping to get more tickets for some friends and my little cousins in 2010.

3. What improvements or changes would you like to see implemented? Somehow promote more traffic to the other sports and off topic boards.

1. Your favorite football and/or basketball game that you attended: 2006 Iowa @ dome. Took my Dad, great game, great company. Runner up is 2005 Mich game at the Big House.

2. Where have you attended Gopher football and/or basketball on the Road? Yes, Ann Arbor
3. Who do you attend Gopher games with (spouse, parent, child, friend(s), alone, etc.)? Wife and In-laws mostly. Occasionally friend or other family.

4. If possible, what non-conference opponent would you like to have on the Gopher schedule annually (football and/or basketball)? Any of the service acadamies. I have a ton of respect for those athletes and patriots.

1. What do you like about the GopherHole site? I'm hooked on this site and particularly like the inside information, discussions, and in depth research that some members provide (even if it can be a bit biased to support their argument). I too like the links that BleedGopher and other posters provide in their threads. I like fans from other schools that enhance the discussion on the board, such as the gentleman from Arkansas (sorry his moniker escapes me at the moment.)

2. What do you dislike about GopherHole? The hijacking of threads, which often leads to petty bickering and negativity. Its frustrating to read a thread that disintegrates quickly into the whole endless Brewster good/bad debate and ends up having nothing to do with the OP. I also hate fans from other teams that post negative posts and tell us how stupid we are - I really could care less what they think.

3. What improvements or changes would you like to see implemented? If possible, more insight into future starters and stars of the team.

III. Fun Questions.

1. Your favorite football and/or basketball game that you attended: Unfortunately, I've only attended a handful of games and most have been painful. I went to the Michigan football game in 2003. I was too disgusted after the Ohio State game in 2006 and haven't attended one since. My favorite game was the 1977 win over then #1 Michigan. I listened to Ray Christianson call the game with my uncle when we were supposed to be duck hunting. I've been a fan ever since.

2. Where have you attended Gopher football and/or basketball on the Road? Haven't attended a game on the road.

3. Who do you attend Gopher games with (spouse, parent, child, friend(s), alone, etc.)? In the past it has been with my kids and my Dad.

4. If possible, what non-conference opponent would you like to have on the Gopher schedule annually (football and/or basketball)? Nebraska. Despite the thumping the Cornhuskers put on the Gophers in the 80's, I'd like to see them back on the schedule and I think it would be more competitive now. We've played 51 games against Nebraska dating all the way back to 1900. As I like to tell my Nebraska friends, Minnesota has a winning record against Nebraska.

1. What do you like about the GopherHole site? Recruiting news and discussion. News in general. The dry humor of Gopher fandom.

2. What do you dislike about GopherHole? Badger fans mostly

3. What improvements or changes would you like to see implemented?

1. Your favorite football and/or basketball game that you attended: The Cal game, the energy in the stadium was electric and Eric Decker was incredible.

2. Where have you attended Gopher football and/or basketball on the Road? Haven't had the chance, I avoid Columbus at all costs.

3. Who do you attend Gopher games with (spouse, parent, child, friend(s), alone, etc.)? My dad and my Great Uncle who still has newspaper clippings from the 1940 Gophers team.

4. If possible, what non-conference opponent would you like to have on the Gopher schedule annually (football and/or basketball)? Selfishly I'd like to see them play Cincinatti so I could drive down for the game but I think a game with Texas A+M or Texas Tech would help with recruiting since Brew is down in Texas for a lot of kids anyway, may as well play a game down there( I know the Gophers will be playing Texas but it would be cool to play an annual game against a team they would have a shot at beating.)

1. What do you like about the GopherHole site? The information. There are so many insider posters where we have the ability to get any Gopher information 1st (in most cases). I also love the friendships - I've made some of my best friends from this site, met incredible Gopher fans, and have loved the stories that all of them have shared. It really is a community/family.

2. What do you dislike about GopherHole? Bad posters. I am all about differing opinions, but can't stand when they're expressed in a childish way - or as a broken record.

3. What improvements or changes would you like to see implemented? Would love the site to have a new, modern, look. Would also like more lurkers to post - our board is getting better and better the more discussion we have, would love for someday there to be more registered members than people online.


III. Fun Questions.

1. Your favorite football and/or basketball game that you attended: I think I have a new one, the road game at the Kohl Center for bball last year. It was a game, no one really thought we'd ever win - as only a single digit amount of teams have won there since Bo Ryan was coach. It appeared that we'd lose, and then came Bostick and Westbrook. I was sitting in media in my neutral colors, but couldn't help but scream by the end of it. I think I was on a high for the next month, best feeling I've ever had leaving the game. They almost had to kick me out of there I didn't want to leave!

2. Where have you attended Gopher football and/or basketball on the Road? Purdue, MSU, MI, IA, WI, NU, IL, OSU...I think all but PSU and IU.

3. Who do you attend Gopher games with (spouse, parent, child, friend(s), alone, etc.)? Always with friends, except the Badger bball game last year at the Kohl center, went on my own because I couldn't get anyone else to go. That's actually the case often, I think I will be a loner/loser and go to more games on my own. It wasn't so bad - better than missing it!

4. If possible, what non-conference opponent would you like to have on the Gopher schedule annually (football and/or basketball)? I'd like Iowa State to be a regular - it just makes sense, closest D1 opponent. Would love to have a Marquette match-up in bball. KU would be fantastic too...anything close by that's a decent opponent!

1. Your favorite football and/or basketball game that you attended: Football vs. Air Force was very fun and an amazing night, other than that, the win at Michigan in 2005. For basketball, the game against Georgia Tech back in '02 was probably the most fun one I've been to.

2. Where have you attended Gopher football and/or basketball on the Road? Been everywhere in the Big Ten for football except Indiana, with multiple trips to Iowa, Penn State and Northwestern. One trip to Colorado State, bowl games in El Paso (2) , Miami, and Nashville (2). Only the Barn for basketball so far, though I've been in Welsh-Ryan Arena and the Bryce Jordan Center.

This being the foremost place to get timely Gopher sports info but more importantly the strong friendships I've developed with some of the people who frequent GopherHole. Studwell's dry sense of humor and Detlef's annual postings the week before the Badger football game.

- Mike Hohensee being mentioned for any Gopher FB offensive coach opening.
- One trick posters who try to push their agenda with each post whether it be they don't like the coach, the offensive scheme, the type of student/athletes recruited or the fact that University wanted to only serve alcohol in the premium seating areas of TCF Bank Stadium but was handtied by the Legislature into not allowing any alcohol in the stadium.... :mad:

Been to Kohl Center for a basketball game.

Since we don't have an already established rivalry with any non-conference opponents it will never come to fruition that a schedule could be worked out with the same team year after year in today's scheduling world but if I had a choice it would probably be Nebraska on a yearly basis. I do like trend of scheduling one major BCS school per year for the upcoming years.

3. What improvements or changes would you like to see implemented? I like the earlier-mentioned idea of a poster-rating system. The outside perspective from respectful fans of opposing schools is nice to have, but we must get rid of the trolls whose sole purpose is incendiary finger-poking of the Gopher fan base.

2. What do you dislike about GopherHole? The bickering and lack of respect among some. You don't need to call someone an idiot just because they have a different opinion.

3. What improvements or changes would you like to see implemented? I like the interviews -- more would be nice. I hate the trolls -- a quicker trigger to ban them would help. This doesn't have to be Homerville, but it is a Gopher fan site, after all. If they are ruining the fun too often, they should be banned.
