Gopher Women's Hockey 2022-23 Season

Looking forward to having the kids at tonight's game. Wisconsin is down a little this year (still strong), we really need to take care of business and sweep, otherwise we are going to be needing help from other teams to come out on top in the WCHA.

Heard outside the arena in a passing car: "Go Badgers! Badgers!"

It is border battle night!

Great to see so many kids and young adults here.

This ticket is a great value. Fast action on the ice for $10.

Gophers had several excellent attacks in 1st quarter. Excellent hockey. Only got 1 goal off those good shots.

Gophers goaltender Skylar Vetter came out moving well, probably could have stopped that goal, and then some vrear saves. Gophers will need strong goaltending down the stretch she almost always gives.

SOLD OUT!

Lots of "oh!" and "OH!" From the crowd tonight from great attacks. Great, smart hockey by the Gophers. Only 1 goal has gone in.

Wisconsin this period put more pressure on the Gophers end and leads in shots on goal 25 to 18.

Taylor Heise! What a goal.

I just knew when she got in space in front of the goaltender and fired. Phenomenal work manufacturing that score.

Great goaltending by both sides. Wisconsin goalie has been pelted with over 40 shots on goal.

Loud "oh!'"s from this crowd as Gophers nearly scored again and again.

Double overtime shootout coming up!

Wisconsin scores. Bummer. Gophers played great hockey tonight.

Top three scorers for the Gophers and barely got off one clean shot during the SO. Quit deking and just shoot it.

Women’s hockey: Badgers beat Gophers in shootout, 3-2

Britta Curl, the seventh player to shoot, ended the marathon game at Ridder Arena with the only shootout goal

....In front of a sellout crowd of 3,539 at Ridder Arena. After six players missed in the shootout, Badgers winger Britta Curl beat Skylar Vetter through the 5 hole to immediately end the game.

The victory helped the Buckeyes pull into a first-place tie with Minnesota (23-4-3 overall, 20-2-3 WCHA) after Ohio State beat St. Thomas, 6-1, in Columbus. The Badgers (22-8-1, 18-6-1) improved to 1-1-1 against the Gophers.

Vetter finished regulation with 31 saves, three in the shootout. Cami Kronish had 42 saves for Wisconsin....."

This team is great entertainment. Catch them if you can. Tickets are cheap.

I felt it was great to see so many kids and young adults there. Many kids in their team colors. I thought I saw athletes from other Gopher sports there.

UW could play spoiler role in series with Minnesota

At No. 3/3 Minnesota, 6 p.m. Friday and 7:30 p.m. Saturday: Minnesota leads the race for the WCHA title by two points, but with second-place Ohio State set to play seventh-place St. Thomas this week, the Gophers will probably have to win both games to maintain their hold on first place.

The Badgers, meanwhile, have something to prove after the five-game losing streak they experienced during the toughest part of their schedule. Wisconsin won the series in November, scoring a 3-3 tie in Game 1 on Nov. 19 and a 4-1 victory in Game 2 the next day. The game Friday can be seen on Big Ten Network+ or the Bally Sports North Extra.

The game Saturday will be on the Big Ten Network.

UW could play spoiler role in series with Minnesota

Some good news is the Gophers play St Thomas next weekend in the final series of the season. Ohio State plays Wisconsin next weekend where Wisconsin can play the spoiler again.

And Gophers need to beat Wisconsin on Saturday.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The No. 8 Wisconsin women's hockey team battled to a 2-2 tie against No. 3 Minnesota on Friday night at Ridder Arena.

Katie Kotlowski and Jesse Compher each potted goals for the Badgers (21-8-2, 17-6-2 WCHA) in the tie against the Gophers (23-4-3, 20-2-3 WCHA).

Kotlowski got the Badgers on the board just over eight minutes into the first period with her first of the season, before the Gophers answered to tie things up.

Wisconsin regained the lead in the second after Compher tipped in a Chayla Edwards shot from the blue line.

The Golden Gophers tied the game up early in the third period but neither team was able to break the deadlock in regulation or in the extra frame.

Britta Curl scored the lone goal in the three-round shootout to give the Badgers the extra point in the WCHA standings.

Cami Kronish made 40 saves in the tie against the Golden Gophers.

Three Notes of the Game:
- It marked Kotlowski's fifth career goal and her first goal since scoring against the Minnesota State Mavericks on Oct. 30, 2021.
- Lacey Eden recorded her 50th career point on Kotlowski's goal.
- UW ended the game with 25 blocked shots, including 7 by freshman Vivian Jungels.

Straight from the Rink
Senior Cami Kronish
On stopping 40 shots against the Gophers:

"It was a crazy game. It was a long game, there were plenty of shots and it was definitely tiring at points. You just have to stay focused because at the end of the day, all that matters is winning… I'm glad we came out with the win."

On getting the extra point in the standings:
"It's absolutely huge for us, especially against such a talented team. We knew that we could do it and we knew that we hadn't played our best hockey yet, and I think this game was a great example of what we can do when we're at the top of our game."

Redshirt Junior Katie Kotlowski
On getting her first goal of the season:

"It was a great faceoff by Kirsten Simms and pass from Lacey Eden. Any shot is a good shot and just getting that through was really good and just exciting to get that goal to put us on the board."

Up Next:
The Badgers and Golden Gophers wrap up their Border Battle on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Ridder Arena. Fans can view the game live on Big Ten Network or online via the Fox Sports App.

Gophers women's hockey ties 2-2 with Wisconsin to open weekend series; Badgers win shootout

Britta Curl's shootout goal, the only score of the session, gave the Badgers the extra point in the WCHA standings.

Suddenly, the Gophers have company at the top of the WCHA standings.

That was the highest attendance single game in Ridder Arena history, apparently. Fans who attended received top entertainment too.

They play again tonight. The game tonight will be on Big Ten Network or tickets may be available. The standing room only tickets are really good.

Next weekend the Gophers will play at Mendota Height, Minnesota at Saint Thomas Ice Arena against St Thomas. Tickets are only $5.

Really need three points tonight. Girls looked great in the 3rd, but we struggled in the second. Still guaranty a share of the title if we win out, but if we drop a point tonight we are at the mercy of hoping for OSU to slip up.

Great hockey game. Gophers had lots of chances. Good offense and passing. Need to play more consistent defense. Anything can happen in UW-UM series. Every game from now on is big. Go Gophers.

No surprise who was Wisconsin's star of the game -- goaltender Cami Kronish. She made a whopping 42 saves.

I think I made a mistake. I thought Vetter had a decent chance to stop this goal, but let's look at the replay:

1676137299228.png

It deflected off the defender/player, suddenly changing the trajectory to the upper corner. By then it was too late. Maybe a bit of a screen on that too. Nothing more a goaltender can do.

Great job in the net for both goaltenders that night!

1676137392196.png

Phenomenal solo goal by Taylor Heise shorthanded. A double move on that excellent Wisconsin goaltender to craft the goal.

Horrible second period so far, nothing on the major power play and now Wisconsin has tied the game after another failed clearing attempt.

Gophers defense mishaps twice. Puck went to a Wisconsin player near the goal alone with time and put it in by the pipe. Then let the skater with the puck to the net go to the center clear and shot it in. Can't give shooters those choice looks.

Controversial calls. Gopher got tripped and flew on the ice but called on the Gopher as a dive. Place was booing loud. That was so bad. Bad call. Horrible call. Then the embellishment dive by Wisconsin did get called cross checking on Gophers. That one I am not so sure about. Wisconsin tripped players many times and not called.

Defense gave these Wisconsin shooters too much time alone facing the net to place the shots. And they did.

Wisconsin also looked better at placing shots in general, except of course Taylor Heise.

They have some work to do entering the tournaments.

What a meltdown. We were 5 points up in the conference with 5 games to go, and the three tough ones at home. Then we lost all 3 (one of them in the shootout), lost 5-1 to OSU, and gave up 4 unanswered after building a 2 goal lead tonight. Way too many defensive blunders, this team needs to find its focus before tournament time. After where we were sitting following the win against OSU, pretty frustrating to be having to cheer for Wisconsin next weekend to hope we can back into the title.

D-E-F-E-N-S-E. The scouting report says that the Gophers love to skate and score. But, if you can get physical with them and disrupt their offense, you can beat them because they don't get set on defense.

Here Wisconsin breaks away down the ice. It doesn't look that bad - yet.

1676209693946.png

Both defenders converge on the player with the puck.

1676209758958.png

A cardinal sin. The other shooter skates to the center -- not forced to the side -- with no pressure to select puck placement against the exposed goalie.

1676209901370.png

Wisconsin played a good defense in front of the net. Minnesota skaters would skate in front of Wisconsin net with timed plays for strong attacks into that zone. In contrast, Wisconsin seemed to sometimes park in front of the net uncontested. It didn't feel like Minnesota had made that zone a challenge enough. (This may be a power play, I don't remember).

1676209389222.png

1676209490191.png

Badger takes the pass in front of the net and flips it for the score. It's not terrible defense but no sense of owning that zone by the Gophers.
1676209548440.png

Too many seconds without pressure too often for Wisconsin shooters to place the puck. They sniped to the pipes and net corners.

In contrast, Minnesota shooters usually shot easier saves.
