Gopher Women's Hockey 2022-23 Season

Minnesota has several big games coming up. First is two games at Bemidji State ranked #31 in the USCHO ranking.

Then Minnesota plays two games at high ranked UMD.

Then Minnesota hosts two games against high ranked Ohio State.

Then Minnesota hosts two games against high ranked Wisconsin.

Minnesota Gophers are ranked #4 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll. I should probably reference this poll one even though NCAA links to the other USCHO ranking.

The USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the five NCAA women's hockey conferences who are eligible for the NCAA Women's National Collegiate Ice Hockey Championships, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey.

Here's the thing we're good enough to sweep UMD and Wisconsin, the only question is are we gonna play like it come game time.

Gophers earlier this season swept UMD, had a win and a tie against Ohio State, had a tie and a loss against Wisconsin, and swept Bemidji State

5-1-2.

The stakes are high at this time. A championship in reach

Gophers are routing Bemidji State 5-0 in the 2nd. Much better everything by the Gophers, particularly puck handling.

2 goals so far Zumwinkle plus an assist.

Now a Gopher Peyton Hemp was just sent to the penalty box for an elbow.

Gophers win 7-0.

Goaltender Skylar Vetter earns another shutout.

Grace Zumwinkle and Taylor Heise are first in the nation to score 20 goals this season. Both reached that mark after both scored 2 goals against Bemidji State.

And the Gophers swept Bemidji State who put up a valiant battle in today's 2nd game.

Bemidji State goaltender Hogenson faced 94 shots from the Gophers over the weekend. She saved 45 of them in Friday’s 7-0 loss, and another 38 on Saturday.

#3/#4 Minnesota swept.

Unfortunately, #1/#1 Ohio State also swept.

And #2/#2 Yale won (1 game), sweeping both games against Quinnipiac this season.

BUT, #6/#3 Quinnipiac lost to Yale.

And #4/#5 Colgate split with Cornell.

So that's Ohio State, Yale, and Minnesota as the clear BIG THREE.

UMD is close behind. Wisconsin has stumbled the last month and next in line.

BIG SHOWDOWN against Ohio State in Minnesota February 3-4. BIG GAMES.

Ohio State and Yale received first place votes. Minnesota is next.

How the hell are you supposed to watch when they keep changing camera angles every 10 seconds?

UMD is really good.

Gophers defeated the Bulldogs today.

Abbey Murphy with 2 goals.

Skaja scored her 8th of the season.

Good game for goaltender Skylar Vetter. Stats against UMD today:

Great game today. Both teams played very well. Great passing and puck handling. The refs did a good job and let them play. Gophers pick up a big win over a tough team on the road. Let's do it again tomorrow. Go Gophers.

Gophers take the lead 4-2.

Now Vetter getting pelted with shots on the power play for UMD.

1674947741005.png

Gophers defense falters as UMD is allowed to hack, hack at the puck by the net until it goes in.

2 minutes to play, UMD down 1.

UMD at the end is swarming with an extra attacker, empty net.

Gophers win!

Followed by a scuffle!

Big sweep against UMD. Next weekend is huge. A home sweep against OSU would really put us in the driver's seat for a conference title, and even 4 or 5 out of 6 would have us sitting pretty.
