Obviously overall public opinion about this team is pretty low right now, but there is still time to show improvement and get some wins along the way. How many wins do you think the Gophers will have the rest of the way in conference?

Love the moniker - favorite MN public course?

I voted 0. We just aren't good. Maybe we beat Nebraska at home, but given who they've lost to and they've beaten Creighton away from home, if they show up, I have a hard time believing that we will beat them. That's our best shot IMO

I'm a big fan of Giants Ridge. We have a group of six guys that play the two Giants Ridge courses, the Wilderness at Fortune Bay, and rotate in a couple other courses over four days each summer. It's a great golf trip. In fact, we just made our hotel reservations at the casino yesterday. But if I have one round left in Minnesota at a course I can play (public), it would be Quarry at Giants Ridge.

My buddy got married at the quarry. Great scenery!

For sure! Awesome patio overlooking the lake/18th hole. There isn't a ton to do up there (restaurants/bars/activities) so it isn't a destination like the Brainerd courses. But the views are awesome and the courses are always in great shape. Some people prefer The Wilderness. I don't but it is also right up there.

Unrelated -- I got a chance to play Olympic Hills this year in Eden Prairie (private). That's a fantastic golf course too if you get a chance to get on it. Tough!

My grandfather was one of the many men who removed the high grade iron ore from the pit to help ensure the US could win WWII. He and hundreds of other locals provided their dump trucks to drive the ore out of the pit and to the trains that brought them to Duluth. I go up every summer, not to play the course, but to look at the blessings we all receive because people like my grandfather gave of themselves for this country. I hope the next time you drive to the Ridge, you remember the great men and women of the Range who worked tirelessly for our freedom.

Great courses, I make the same trip with a group of guys every year as well.

If I ever go back I might remember you mentioned something. My grandfather was also deployed in WWII.

Posted this elsewhere but seemed relevant in here.

Per an article I found Northwestern went winless in 2000-01 and 1991-92. Prior to that it was University of Chicago who did it 7 times in 10 years in the 30s and 40s

Rutgers in 2015-16 was in the verge starting 0-17 with only 1 game left. Senior day against the 2-15 gophers (who had beat them by 22 earlier in the year).

This Rutgers team was horrible. Lost 14 of 17 games in conference by double digits. Including a 107-57 loss at home to Purdue and 5 total conference games by 30+.

They pounded the gophers 75-52 on senior night to avoid a winless conference season. The Gophers started Murphy (3/21 that day!!), Buggs, Sharp, Gilbert and Konate. Lukashiwich, Diedhou and Haugh played off the bench.

The answer is one. There will be only one conference win.

I went with 3 conference wins. Trying this optimism thing out for once.
I chose 3 as well. That’s about 4 or 5 less than I was projecting prior to the season.

Wisconsin is one of the teams I think we can beat. They don’t exactly blow people out, but on the other side of that they rarely beat themselves. If the Badgers blow us out, that’s not a good sign.

The Quarry is my favorite of those two there as well. I do like Dakota Ridge an awful lot too.

HUH? How long did you live on the Range?

0-20. 1960s & 70s. Loved the summers. Hated the cold. Moved down to the tropics in the early 80s. Go back in the summers to recharge.

Excluding perhaps Grand Rapids, the Range has become the Gary, Indiana of the north.

Not even close, but it has certainly lost some great characters over the years. I mean, what other region can boast of having Communist Party candidates for the President of the US? Good ole Gus Hall. Today there is more economic depression, but the folks still work hard to survive.

I went with 2 wins. I could see 1-3. 0 seems similarly likely to 4.

Yeah well you have been away to long then. It has become a sheet hole from one end to the other.

I gave them a chance to win 2-4 assuming our freshman will get better with experience. However, as a team unless they can improve on free throws, rebounding, and turnovers, they might not win any.

I go up every summer. I ride various sections of the Mesabi Trail on my bike and kayak on the lakes. It's absolutely wonderful. The Range has always had its poor and its drunks & druggies. That's nothing new. There are a lot of good people living there, but if you want them to kowtow to you, you're likely to get an a$$ full of buckshot instead.

I was born and raised there. My dad worked in the PI Pit then later became an Engineer for one of the mining companies. The Poor, the Drunks and the Druggies are far worse now than 40-50 years ago.
