Gopher Ranking Thread- Gophers ARE NOW RANKED #25 CFN Poll

Do we achieve any Top 25 ranking at some point?

I think having four losses to end the season probably has us ranked, especially if we win our bowl game. Three losses and it’s not a question, five and we maybe get a couple of votes with a bowl win.

MN wasn't ranked at the end of 2022 or 2021 with 9 wins and 4 losses, so I'm guessing they'd need to win out to get ranked in the end. They probably get to the edge of being ranked with wins vs IL and Rutgers, and for sure if they win the next three, but one more loss drops them out for the season IMO.

it will take 3 in a row to get ranked. 3/4 to finish the year may also be enough.

but they're not even getting votes right now and haven't beaten a team who's above .500
It’s nice that it’s even a possibility, albeit remote, at this point

Probably not. Our 3 losses aren’t exactly great, we’re not a big brand or SEC school (see undefeated Indiana outside the top 10…), and our remaining schedule is tough.

I bet we’re getting a few votes if we win the next two at 7-3, ranked if we beat Penn State at 8-3. Maybe ranked if we finish the season at 9-4 with a bowl win, but nothing less than that.

Indiana not being in the Top Ten is a joke. I don't expect us to be ranked this year, but I would love to be surprised! It's been a lot of fun after an abysmal start.
what do you mean? AP logic makes perfect sense. only ranked ahead of them are...
2 GA who lost to Bama but they beat Texas and Clemson
3 PSU who beat... well they haven't lost...
4 OSU who only lost to 1 Oregon by 1! plus they beat Nebraska who is so back. wait Indiana beat them too and by 49? Well OSU beat Iowa so there!
6 Texas only lost to 2 GA and has beaten Oklahoma (so what if they have lost 4 games, they're Oklahoma!)
7 Tennessee who beat Bama! So what if they lost to Arkansas? That's a good loss because it shows how tough the SEC is every week. You have to have some good losses on the schedule to show conference depth
8 ND beat Texas A&M who is in the top ten and so we can ignore one game and we choose to ignore NIU because even though they're now 4-4 and 1-3 in the MAC, they were pretty inspired that day
10 Texas A&M who only lost to ND and again, you gotta have those good losses.
11 Iowa State. Remember that beating Iowa thing, well they did that too!
12 Clemson so what if they got embarrassed by Georgia. That team is really good we think and Clemson has beaten Florida State. Wait what do you mean they're 1-7? well dabo is still their coach and he'll be mean to us if we don't rank them good

In reality, let's hope the first CFP rankings make a little more logical sense. I get Indiana hasn't played anyone, but there's no logical reason to have any 1 loss team ahead of those without a loss (yes even Army).

I was a little heavy handed, and hyperbolic. Rather than calling it a "joke," let me convey that I think Indiana should be top ten considering Notre Dame has dropped a game to Northern Illinois and Indiana is unbeaten.

we'd have to beat Penn St, in addition to the next 2. Probably jump into the top 20 then.
If we win the next 3 (Ill, Rutgers, PSU) that would almost certainly get us into the top 25 I would think. But that is probably the only scenario that gets us there during the season. After that the only hope of getting ranked would be a ranking in the final top 25 after the bowl game.

Pitt might have a better argument for that.

I 👃another win Saturday and I think we demolish Rutgers and go into the game with Penn State ranked 24/25 or just outside, and we beat them anyway to be 8-3 for Whisky, where we’re definitely ranked.
It’s a mortal 🔒
Had we the opportunity to play the full Michigan game and won -- odds better than 50% -- we would be ranked right now.

Or had 1 of 2 missed FGs vs UNC not drifted wide right. Hindsight says the Gophs are two special teams plays away from being a top 15 team. The margin of error is thin.

I disagree it was not at all heavy handed. It is purely name recognition and the media’s “theoretical” idea of who’s good with zero real basis on merit . I get it if they say they haven’t beaten anyone, but neither have OSU, PSU, Clemson or Iowa State

Honestly I think if they win the next two they might be ranked. At least really close.

tbh, if you add one more gopher win they're borderline ranked. if you add two more, they're in the top 25 but don't think they're in the top 15. we'd still have no wins over ranked teams and even Indiana at 8-0 has barely cracked the top 15

None currently ranked but Michigan and USC were both ranked at the time and still marquis teams. Indiana has yet to play a team the quality of those two or Iowa.

sure and USC went from 11 to unranked losing to us. Have to remember that the gophers will never get the media hype/benefit of the doubt when looking at rankings. we had to get to 8-0 in 2019 before we were in the top 15 (and it took being 6-0 to even get ranked at all). 2014 we were 6-1 with a win over Michigan and weren't even ranked. 2013 8-2 and unranked. ditto for 2016. We were coming off a bad year last year and picked by pretty much everyone to be between 12-17 in the conference. that's a big perception jump for the AP to consider ranking you because of the intertia of where they started the year

If we win the next three games, there is no way we don’t get ranked.

There’s maybe a 5% chance of that happening.

How do you figure two special teams plays? The special teams executed the onside kick perfectly in the Michigan game and recovered the ball well into Michigan territory with 1:36 to play.

The still camera shot directly down the line clearly showed Kingsbury was at least six inches behind the line when the ball had already gone.

The odds they tie and go to OT are overwhelming. The odds of scoring a TD and winning were better than good. We had scored three fourth quarter TDs and recovered the onside kick.

That was not a ST failure. On the contrary it was a huge success.

Blocked punt that led to a TD or a missed FG. Take your pick.

If we manage to win out, maybe, since it would include a win over at the time #24 Illinois and a (probably) top 5 Penn State. Even more likely if our games vs Rutgers and Wisconsin are blowout wins.

If we lose any down the stretch, I don't think we get ranked in any poll. If our games vs Rutgers and/or Wisconsin are close wins, I don't think we get ranked.

If we manage to get ranked, it will likely be 24th at the highest IMO. If we play a bowl game vs a ranked opponent and win will go up a few spots. If our bowl opponent is unranked and we blow them out, we might go up a few places too. If we lose our bowl game, or play a close game against an unranked opponents we'll likely drop out of the top 25.

If we win out we will absolutely be ranked, i’d say 18-20

Win the next 3 and maybe. That kind of year.

C'est le Minnesota il me semble.
