Gopher Ranking Thread- Gophers ARE NOW RANKED #25 CFN Poll

Do we achieve any Top 25 ranking at some point?

Of course the Gophers helped some teams get or stay under .500.
Sure. More is just that the resume will not look all that impressive to getting them ranked. Same as beating Rutgers this weekend won’t do much of anything to boost us further. Maybe we sneak in at say 24 or 25 if others around us lose but it’s a challenge for teams like MN to get big boosts without some splashy wins

Well sure, it's subjective but for example Oregon beat Ohio State ... a top 5 team.
Purdue 35 to zero
Illinois 38 to 9...certainly more convincing than we beat them.
and Michigan at Michigan 38 to 17. (we lost at Michigan to kick start our run)
That's their last 4.
For me to say the Gophers 4 game win streak is more impressive would be clouded in bias.

Other teams that have 4 game win streaks.

1.) W. Michigan - interesting PJ connection - but we are better than them.
2.) Georgia - OK - you may have me here, but then again they barely beat a not so good Florida team.

Still, you are probably correct that MN is not the best 4 win in a row team --> but we are easily the 2nd best.

So the correct statement is "outside of Georgia, we are easily the best 4 win in a row team in the nation."

CFN does a good job! Rank all 130 every week so you can see how all the teams move week to week. They have Iowa at 19 one spot below Iowa State which makes a lot of sense and probably why they can justify the Gophs at 25. They also have South Carolina in the teens and are not bothered by their three loses. They just put teams where they think they should be.

CBS Sports also ranks all 130+ every week which is why these are my two favorites.

Why do we even use the AP? Just seems like a bunch of lazy people hanging onto their preseason rankings and old biases.

This works for me

This works for me
Why don't we add some more qualifiers....just to be sure we are the best...since we are eliminating anybody with more than four straight wins...we could just say best team from Minnesota in the Big Ten with a four game winning streak are the Gophers. Then we'd be all alone riding high with no possible arguments.

Maybe just enjoy this a bit and not try to be so precise or intellectual about it.

They will be ranked if they beat Rutgers by 2 touchdowns. Win by 3 on a last second field goal on national TV may get you votes in AP and a few more in the coaches, but not enough to get them in top 25 unless everyone in front of them falls apart. Go on NBC and show people you are in a different class than Rutgers and people will rank you.

I didn’t know he mixes FCS and FBS in his model, has South Dakota State at #48, ahead of 8 B1G schools. Stetson dead last at #263, I watched them play St. Thomas, it was the worst football I have ever seen played.
Stetson did beat powerhouse Ave Maria University earlier this year. Not sure what happened after that.

If gophers finish 9-3 they have an outside shot at playoff.
9-3 Minnesota would go before 10-2 Penn state or 10-2 Indiana.
Why would a 9-3 MN go before a 10-2 Penn State? Not being snarky here....is our strength of schedule better than theirs?

Because Minnesota would have a head to head win over Penn state and Penn state would have 0 wins over teams who finished ranked

The poll is tied at 48, I’m posting for one more Yes vote, so we got that good mojo as we invade Jersey

Does it really bother you that much that people are looking for positive angles? Fans should be riding high right now....team is on a 4 game Big Ten win streak with a great chance to push it to 5 this weekend.

Playing way beyond the expectations of the "be realistic" hedge betting portions of the fanbase too

No 3 loss team has an outside shot at the playoff. There aren't enough at large spots available.

It is mathematically possible that there are fewer than 11 teams with 2 or fewer losses. So this is just flat out incorrect

It would take a lot of chaos over the remainder of the season to get to a point where a 3 loss team has a legit shot of making the playoff but it isn't impossible.

To be clear, I don't expect us to be anywhere near the playoff discussions even if we win out but what some guy says is possible although I wouldn't be shocked to see a 2 loss Penn State still ahead of us even with a head to head win against them given that their only other loss would be Ohio State.

In past years I would agree with you. Especially if that team had a difficult schedule. But there are so many 0, 1, or 2 loss teams right now with only 3 or 4 games left. Add in the fact ND is taking a bid.

That's a lot of teams for a 3 loss team to leapfrog.

Why so negative? Why does it bother you others are being positive? Dream a little. :)

You aren't the one taking on gunfire. Excluding people with a winstreak greater than four is a bit too precise for me. I am enjoying the ride and certainly anticipating celebrating destinations 5, 6 and 7 along the route.
