Gopher Fans are crazy to call for Tubby’s head after just 4+ seasons

Question for everyone: If Joe wasn't the ad at the time....would Royce would still be a gopher, would Trevor have been done playing out his eligibility a year ago and would we have had a better record the past two years?

Gene Keady was 68 when he left the Purdue program; Tubby is 60. Keady made the NCAA tourney when he was 65. Tubby has got some coaching left in him. Besides Purdue had their guy in Matt Painter and the uncertainty of the future for the Boilmakers was non-existent. If we had a Matt Painter-type assistant here at the U, I think a lot of us would agree that it would a completely different situation than what we currently have.
Even if this were the case, let me remind you that Purdue was terrible in those last Keady years.

The point is that he did raise the level of mediocrity. The team was 9-22 when he took over, right? His first year the team was 20-13. His salary is in the middle of the B1G. You can't deny injuries and transfers. I know I'm beating a dead horse but it's fact. He's the ONLY gopher's coach (Legitimately) to make back-to-back NCAA tourney's? How is that not raising the level of mediocrity? I get it, right now it's disappointing but you can't fire him after year five. Tom Crean was 8-46 in the B1G before this year. I suppose he should've been fired last year as well.

Crean had monster recruiting classes coming in as his teams struggled on the court. Fans could see that 4 and 5 star players were on their way. Smith, on the other hand, has an extremely underwhelming class coming in next season and nothing signed for 2013.

One of the most disappointing things that has happened over the past two years is the migration of the low expectations crowd from the football board over to the basketball board. It's so pathetic to read these posts excusing poor performance based on history. I guess schools like UConn, Wisconsin, and Baylor should have just closed up shop because Minnesota was a superior program to all 3 historically. I guess Minnesota should be expected to compete for national titles in football with regularity because history shows that very few programs have won 6 of them.

Tubby is 6-21 in his last 27 Big Ten games and 2-10 in his last 12 Big Ten home games.
Tubby's best conference record after 5 years will be WORSE than Bo Ryan's worst conference record in his tenure at Wisconsin.
Tubby was not brought in to Minnesota to go .500 in the conference, much less perform similar to Dan Monson, he was brought in to compete fore conference championships. Thank god, the administration hasn't taken the view of basketball that many have of football or we would have hired a coach for 800K- 1 mil who "understands Minnesota".

I cannot stand the idea that Minnesota should somehow accept not being a Big Ten contender in revenue sports and the "fans" who are willing to accept/justify poor performance are certainly part of the problem.

I agree 100% Honestly, this is the most well-crafted, on-point and concise response I have ever read. This right here sums everything Tubby Smith has ever done at Minnesota perfectly: "Tubby's best conference record after 5 years will be WORSE than Bo Ryan's worst conference record in his tenure at Wisconsin."

Here is what really bugs me. Those on here that support Tubby to the extent that they are willing to rip the programs potential to protect their dear Tubby. I refuse to accept that MN cannot have a good basketball program. It's ridiculous. Those that have resorted to that as an excuse for Tubby should be ashamed.

Agreed it's an insult to his past success and ability. It's the same parroted one sided crap we heard throughout the 2009 and 2010 football seasons and now the same people are bantering about Jerry Kill being the next Barry Alvarez. Intelligent discourse is out the window, it's all positive or you're demeaning the coach's humanity.

By no means am I ripping the program. I'm as big as fan as anyone else on here. The program has very little history and that's just a fact. Those who want Tubby to fail are hurting the program as well. And those who believe that 100+ years of subpar basketball at best should be turned around in 4+ seasons should be ashamed, too.

When all is said and done if Tubby loses Washington, Vaughn, and Jones he will be a failure and nothing is going to change that. If you can't keep the top kids from Minnesota home you aren't going to be successfull here, that is a given. I don't expect him to get all three but if he loses all three he won't be successfull.

To compare Tubby's 5 years here to the history of the program is simply wrong. We have finished in the top half of the conference many times. Basketball in MN is so much better than it was in the 70's. I played in the Lake Conference for 4 years and never saw one Div 1 player.
When Tubby was hired I never saw one person say..."yeah, I think Tubby can get us on the bubble every year for the big dance"! Tubby supporters like myself were talking competing for the title. The only thing that has changed is losses. The program was the same then but now that Tubby is failing, the same people are running down the program.

So your saying that Tubby should get as good of classes as Crean are you kidding me? Compare our history, facilities,,etc..

Did I miss the part where BigGopherFan either directly stated or inferred Tubby's classes should be as good as Crean's? No where in his comments did he even remotely come close to saying that, he was simply responding to why Indiana fans have given Crean a break from being below typical Indiana standards.
Above average or underwhelming for Tubby is signing an average of a four star per class, which is roughly equal to Wisconsin and Baylor.

The Mountain West is a real conference. Monson does not coach in a real conference. He coaches in the Big West.

I'd be willing to bet that Monson's team this year would be 6th or better in the Big Ten and would beat the Gophers. They are very good and I would not be the least bit surprised, depending on draw and seed, if they get a couple of NCAA wins this year. Not starting a Monson argument, Tubby is a better coach overall (not in some aspects, but overall) but it's not fair minded to say that Monson hasn't done well there or that they don't play real basketball.
