Gopher-centric Portal Short List

I have to admit that I don't understand the collective desire and angst over the plans of a guy who has topped out at 10.6 pts per game and a Player Efficiency Rating of 15.3 (about average) in his career so far. What I think must be driving this is that so many people here watched that NCAA tournament game against Memphis where he scored 23 points. The thing is that was one of only two games where he scored over 20 points that season. Tyson had fifteen 20+ point games this past season.
I certainly hope we land him just for his familiarity with Niko's systems on both ends of the court but he's not a guy that I'm spending a big chunk of NIL on.

He would be a good addition to our roster, though.

I agree to some level. But having a player who knows the system is big. And I think he'd be a nice fit next to Asuma. I know UNC isn't the UNC of old right now, but they don't pursue duds.

He was a sophomore just starting to hit his peak at CSU. Then it didn't work at UNC. If he can average 12-14 PPG that's better than Langston Reynolds, while also being able to actually make 3's and shoot FT's.

The only issue I have with the current roster configuration is with the general lack of strength and athleticism on defense. We’re filling up the roster with nice length and shooting ability, but we could use some quick, athletic guards to round out the class. Evans is really neither quick or strong, but would be a decent facilitator.

Asuma would definitely have to be the guy to step into that Reynolds role if we round out the class with Evans.

His game is nothing like Reynolds though. He’s skinny, avoids contact, and is known as a decent team defender, but not a stopper. Asuma and Nolan Groves would have to take the Reynolds role.

I think you’re underestimating Groves’s defensive prowess. Someone shared a video on here of his performance against Duke. I think you’ll feel relieved watching that.

It changed my perception a lil bit

For sure. I think Asuma and Groves are 100% the guys that will need to step into that role.

He's waiting for that top tier to sign in hopes a blue blood misses out and he gets an opportunity again is my guess....

But I been wrong many a time before

My concern is that we're leaning heavily on faith here with our first three commits as they're all freshmen who have shown next to nothing in college so far. Then, our most coveted remaining portal player is someone who has been only average at best in his first three years. OK, he knows the system. Tyson, Reynolds, Durkin, and Asuma didn't "know the system" but they adapted well enough to it.

You said he's not someone who you feel is worth a big chunk of compensation. I agree but, if we have a decent sized chunk of compensation remaining, it would be nice if they would find someone who looks like he's worth it.

Reynolds was the PG. Evans would be the PG. They might not be the same type of PG but it is a 1 to 1 replacement.

He played 13 minutes in that game and had three fouls, one rebound, and missed both of his shots. Shinholster had some really nice defensive moments this season. Maybe somebody should put together a video compilation of those and someone could watch it and say that he should have been defensive player of the year.

It's been 48 hours since his Iowa visit and we're assuming he's really signing somewhere he hasn't visited at all?

Reynolds wasn't supposed to be the PG though, that was out of injury necessity. He also rarely guarded the opposing PG (took the opposing team best wing, which Evans will certainly not do.)

Reynolds is a tough, jacked, rugged defender who couldn't shoot.

Evans is a skinny spot up sniper. Their games are nothing alike

Agree

Completely with both Slim Tubby and TwistingMyMelon

If Groves plays more than a few minutes a game we are not having much of a year.

You have no idea what kind of year we are having cause you have no idea what this team may look like on the floor next fall. Just like you had no idea what the finished product was going to be this past year. Wait until they are assembled and Niko has had a chance to see how it all fits together. There are so many guys who can play that just get buried on benches because of any number of reasons. I’ll defer until 8-10 games in to see where we are at. Niko’s offense gets people open shots and layups. The defensive plan seems solid. I’m looking forward to next fall!

Disagree! How do you come up with this?
I was wondering if he meant Grove. If Groves ends up playing a lot of minutes that would mean he was probably healthy. If that’s the case we could see a potential superstar open up the floor for everybody. Of course it might not, but sky is the limit in that scenario. Edit: I was thinking of Winters Grady and the injury history. But hey, point might still stand!

The Shinholster domino will now probably fall, one way or the other.

Other than Kai, do we have one more vacancy?

You’re too connected to traditional 1-5 roles. Reynolds and Asuma were both combo guards. Asuma’s skillset and size are much closer to Reynolds than Evans’ are.
Sure his skillset is. But Asuma isn't replacing Reynolds. He's still in the same role he was last year.

I'm just an idiot who never learns. The classic MN fan who thinks Championship next year. Only to get that sweet sweet taste of disappointment.
I suffer the same optimism. This state is starving for a championship and we are fiending
