Gopher-centric Portal Short List

You’re too connected to traditional 1-5 roles. Reynolds and Asuma were both combo guards. Asuma’s skillset and size are much closer to Reynolds than Evans’ are.

You're too concerned about replacing a 'Reynolds role'. They're not trying to, and don't need to find a replica for him. He was just a one year player that had his strengths and flaws.

If Groves ends up playing a lot of minutes that would mean he was probably healthy. If that’s the case we could see a potential superstar open up the floor for everybody.

I've spent countless numbers of hours over the last decade pouring over player records on College Basketball at Sports Reference. If you haven't done that, you might be surprised by how many Top 100 players coming out of high school didn't do much in college. Groves wasn't even Top 100. He was rated as the #48 shooting guard by 247. He could end up being very good. He could also end up being mediocre. He hasn't done much so far and I don't think the fact that he averaged 34 points per game as a senior at Orono HS is going to give you a clear answer to that question.

Reynolds was the PG. Evans would be the PG. They might not be the same type of PG but it is a 1 to 1 replacement.

Nothing but his play will give a clear answer to that question.

Shinholster needs to get on, get off or get left.
I hope he stays. He showed some defensive grit all season. His shot looked good, just didn’t go in much last year. Biggest thing was he got better as the season went on. Not saying he’ll be a starter, but he can and should be a great bench piece next season.

Like I said in my edit. I was thinking of Winters Grady. Groves could still be very good or mediocre like you said, but college recruitment has always been hit or miss. Just thought it was silly to write off a player so early.

It is more likely Shinholster is waiting to see if the Gopher coaches will have space (and money) for him at this point.

If they do, he will probably stay.

If not, then to the portal he goes.

I'm sure the Gophers are still kicking the tires on a few guys in the portal.

Isaac Bruns.

Given that we were losing a lot of points between Tyson and Reynolds, I thought of him about a month ago as a potential top transfer prospect but then I saw that he was hurt (I assumed he was anyway since he didn't play after mid-January). I figured that Niko would want to avoid that like the plague but Winters Grady was also injured so I guess he's a little flexible on that. Bruns certainly is a proven scorer.

He could use a red shirt to get stronger and work on his shooting.

He seemed to lose confidence in his shot as the season wore on. He kept playing hard, especially on the defensive end. I hope he stays for another year anyway. I don't see the point of replacing him with different player who is further down on the rotation.

In terms of next season's roster, given a choice I'd want Bruns over Shinholster. But if Niko is high on Shinholster's impact beyond 2026-27, I get it.

Of course, I have no idea if Niko is interested in Bruns.

I don't disagree with either of you. There's something to say for having a big guard with some meat on his bones who can muscle his way around and drive to the basket with some authority. Reynolds got us a lot of big baskets that way. Maybe Groves will be that guy. Based on his freshman season, Groves is a worse free throw shooter than Reynolds, and that's saying something.

The “Reynolds role” was a guard who has the size and ability to consistently attack the rim and play lock down individual defense. You 100% need big physical guards in this league.

Evans is not that guy, never has been, it’s not his game. Asuma has the size and tools coming into his junior year to make another leap.

South Dakota G Isaac Bruns has heard from the Gophers since entering the transfer portal."

I suffer the same optimism. This state is starving for a championship and we are fiending
Not including Gopher Hockey here. But I have never seen. One of my teams even in a championship, let alone win one.

Well, sure! But Bruns would cost a lot more. Who knows what we have left.

Evans doesn’t need to be that guy. They can make up the ‘Reynolds Role’ with a bigger and more athletic roster, which is exactly what Niko is doing.

Any word on Matas Deniusas? It feels like we’d be in great shape if we added a versatile, scoring big to the depth chart. I wouldn’t hate another reasonably good ball handler that can defend, either. Niko may have lots of toys to play with!

I mean, we got two, maybe three open roster spots. In all honestly, we need more.

It sure is nice to be signing transfers from some major college basketball powers instead of the MAC or WAC, etc! Places like Michigan and NC have so much talent, it is easy for a good young player to get put on the back burner. Come on over to The U and we will throw you into the flame.

I think Groves is going to play a lot & be a fan favorite!

Groves is exactly the type of player for this role, but you're right that Asuma can also help fill this role.

Groves is an inch taller than Reynolds, played guard most of his life, attacks the rim & plays great defense.

Asuma also can fill that role. He's only an inch shorter than Reynolds, can also handle the ball and attack the basket.

Both players can help fill the Reynolds role, which might end up being better.

So would the ideal next commits be Matas and Bruns? Bruns seems to have a lot of interest.
