Glen Mason

9-10 wins is a stretch for a Mason squad in 2008. Yes the schedule was favorable that year, but the talent on that squad would have been a lot lower then the 2003 squad. 2003 was the only time Mason ever won 9 or 10 games, so its a little cavalier on your part to assume year would have been Mason's coaching highlight at Minnesota. But yes schedule is the main factor in allowing teams to have a break out year. Kirk Ferentz's breakout year considered with Iowa's turn for a easy big ten schedule. I would assume the same thing for Alvarez in 1993, although I could be wrong.

Listing other non-LB Mason defensive recruits shows how poor at reading comprehension you are.

LOL. Maybe its your reading comprehension that needs work. OP said Mason didn't recruit defense (not just linebackers) and mentioned only Triplett (a LB) going to NFL when there were more than ten Mason defensive players who were signed by NFL. Actually, there were other LBs such as Campbell and Van De Steeg was an undersized DE or pro LB prospect.

Nope, it's just fine, thanks. He said one LB recruited by Mason was sent to the NFL. Actually, that's not even correct, as Triplett has never played an NFL game. So, the answer to the question "How many games have Mason-recruited LBs played in the NFL?" is still "Zero." You listing all of Mason's defensive recruits (very few of whom actually ever played in the NFL, by the way) doesn't change that fact. Mason was better at turning low-level prospects into legitimate players than perhaps any coach I've ever seen. The problem is that he was taking (for the most part) 3s and turning them into 7s or 8s. Brewster is taking 5s and 6s and trying to turn them into 7s and 8s, and preferably into 9s or 10s. His oldest HS recruits (other than the leftovers he signed over two weeks in Jan 2007) are now juniors, mostly redshirt sophs actually. The evidence is mounting that he can't do that, but we really truly can't say, as he hasn't been given the full opportunity to do so.

Anyone who think Brewster is as good a coach as Mason is has lost all credibility. Brewster defenders blow my mind.

Brewster has put up comparable numbers of Big Ten wins to Mason. If you're going to ignore Mason's first year where he had only one Big Ten win, it's unfair to include Brewster's first year.

I'm not defending Brewster, simply showing you that "Mase" isn't the coach you seem to think he was. For a coach who produced such a great rushing attack, that attack sure failed him when he needed it most. You don't blow large leads when you can run the ball!

No it isn't, it's perfectly fair. Mason took over a program in MUCH WORSE shape than Brewster did. The Wacker era was one of the worst in our history and the Mason era was one of the best in the last 50 years, Mason had a HUGE re-building job when he arrived. Brewster did not come here to rebuild, he took over a solid program at the time and has made it significantly worse.

DMB you may be the only person alive that does not realize that Brewster came into a massive rebuilding job. Just look at the record trend of Mason's last teams. Along with the defensive starters kicked off the team during the off season. As well as the recruiting rankings for Mason's final years.

Thank you for more evidence of Mase's coaching ineptitude.

Inept? Mason didn't play Minnesota nice with the fans, blew several games that his successor and predecessor wouldn't have been in (Michigan for sure) and probably had to go after the Texas Tech debacle. But inept? He won at Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan and was named the national coach of the year.
Anyone who thinks that will EVER happen to Brewster here (won't be this year and he won't be around next year) or anyplace else is sucking on a serious Schnoodler Kool-Aid float.
Keep hating on Mason, but don't revise history.

You can't look at the records, say, "Wacker was worse than Mason, therefore Mason inherited a worse team than Brewster." It's not as simple as that.

Look at the number of Wacker recruits who played under Mason and went to the NFL, and then look at the number of Mason recruits who played under Brewster and went to the NFL, and get back to me. Sure, Mason does get some credit for that, but even the greatest coach in the universe can't account for that kind of disparity.

Could you show me the Tyrone Carter that Brewster inherited? Lamanzer Williams? Tutu Atwell? Parc Williams? Brew inherited a freshman QB. Mase inherited a senior QB.

Brewster is in year 4 and showing no signs of being able to coach...

Lets compare both 3rd years...not even close...

If you think that the difference between 5-3 and 3-5 in conference record isn't even close then you truly have settled for being a fan of an average team.

Answer this question honestly. Are you saying that the program after the '96 season(when Mason took over) was in as good as shape as it was after the 2006 season(when Brewster took over)? And are you typing all this with a straight face?

Mase: 5-3 without playing 6-2 Michigan and 6-2 Michigan State/beat two teams that finished .500 or above in the BT
Brew: 3-5 without playing 1-7 Indiana and 1-7 Michigan/beat three teams that finished .500 or above in the BT

In '99 the Gophers lost to Wisconsin & Ohio State by 3 points each...& then beat #2 Penn State *AT* Penn State...

Where's Brewsters signature win? When was he ever close...

A 3 point loss to a 6-6 Ohio State team.

name one big time recruit from MN that Mason got. Name one coach from a big time MN hs program that respected Mason. You can hate Brewster but making Mason into a hero is stupid.

What's Brewster doing with his 4 Star QB Recruit?

Riiiiiiight...

Now please name one Brewster Signature Win...

Matter of fact...name one loss that even showed we're headed in the right direction...

Don't worry...I'll wait...

He doesn't have one. That's why he's dead man walking.

Why is Mase in the corporate world?

Cuz he couldn't Minnesota over the hump...

His time was up but hiring someone with no coaching experience was flat out *DUMB*...

This debate is starting to sound like an argument over which Lee sister is prettier, Home or Ug?

"Brewster is taking 5s and 6s and trying to turn them into 7s and 8s, and preferably into 9s or 10s." LMAO. THERE ARE NO FUTURE 9S AND 10S FOR BREWSTER. HIS RECRUITING CLASSES WERE OVERRATED AND HE CAN'T DEVELOP THEM LIKE MASON COULD. KEEP DRINKING THE KOOL-AID. JUST LIKE BREW IS PUTTING US IN THE ROSEBOWL TOO. WHEN HE TOOK THE JOB, HE SAID HE DIDN'T NEED TO REBUILD JUST RELOAD AND TALKED ROSE BOWL THE FIRST YEAR WHILE COACHING THE TEAM TO ONE WIN. BREWSTER'S BEST TALENT IS TALKING BS AND SNOWBALLING MATURI AND HIS INITIAL RECRUITING CLASS. THE GUY IS JUST NOT DIVISION ONE HEAD COACH MATERIAL. WHY BURN ANOTHER YEAR ON THIS DISASTER? THERE ARE MUCH BETTER COACHES AVAILABLE SUCH AS LEACH, BOISE ST OR HOUSTON COACHES.

The way HE LEFT the program??? He was freaking fired. He didn't leave anything. I understand why you'd be upset that the players Mase left around didn't thrive in the freaking spread the next year. How in the hell is that Mason's fault?

If I was Mase, I'd keep my sh$t-eating grin every single week as his tenure he continues to be validated by every embarassing low Brewster takes us to. He should be smiling. And the thing is, Mason is a smart guy which makes him a good analyst. Who would want to listen to Brew yapping all afternoon about how tremendous everyone is. Ughh...
