GAME #27: Gophers (17-9, 6-7) v. Illinois (14-12, 3-10) [BTN, 2/19, 8:00PM]

We still have some entertaining games left.

All is not lost.

Four games remain, then they have the BTT.

Might just have to work to make a run in the BTT to get a NCAA bid instead, but all is not lost.
It's a big step backwards, but if they still find a way to get two wins, they could be okay.

I can't wait till we get rid of all Tubby players.

Pathetic game tonight and about the last thing I expected. Seeing a number of Illinois games I went into this game thinking there is no way we can lose this at home and even though they shot the 3 a lot better than usual we still shouldn't have lost this game. Horrible effort in a game that was really needed and I don't know if I could pick any player that played well for the Gophers tonight. Need to find at least 2 wins out of @Ohio State, Iowa, @Michigan, and Penn State and right now that seems hard to do.

We're young. Young teams have games like this one. We only have 8 upperclassmen in our rotation and we do play a single freshman.

I'm thinking we will have to win out if we want to make the tourney...

We basically let Illinois come into the barn and dictate how the game was going to be played. They got a lot of open shots and we didn't. They got most of the loose balls. They made smarter plays. This one hurts.
Basketball's a game of momentum. The Gophs had plenty early and Illinois couldn't but a hoop. Stupid turnovers, stupid fouls and stupid shot selection gave Illinois the window they needed. They seized control, they played harder and they played smarter. Someone needs to let Malik Smith know that he can get an open look at a 28-footer any time, maybe that's not the shot you want with 25 seconds on the shot clock.

The only thing giving me hope is that as BAD as we've been against teams we should overwhelm, is how good we've been against teams who should be dominate us. If we can jump up and beat a good team, we'll be in good shape.

Have to beat OSU or Iowa now, maybe both. It's that simple. Impossible? No.

Austin made a few shots but was giving up offensive boards and making boneheaded mistakes. And Malik was awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwful.

No doubt, but this
When nobody can hit a shot, plus Li'l Dre gives you nothing, plus you have a ton of stupid turnovers, plus you give up open threes then decide to change it up and start giving up layups, plus don't hustle, well, you'll have a tough time winning a game. My only hope is that we play up to our competition in one of the next three and get a shock win. But I can't say I'm confident after this absolutely atrocious performance
had nothing to do with the seniors

Sure we lost tonight, its basketball I can handle it. The thing that gets me is the pouty/pissy attitude that Mathieu has after every foul or when something doesn't go his way. Good God quit doing it, it brings the whole team down when you act that way.

Started with Elliot, he was so down after missing 2 free throws, shaking his head and what not, team never recovered from that. You miss, ok, move on, don't beat yourself up, brings down the whole team, and doesn't make you better

Austin Hollins is Absolutely Terrible

I've held off on posting this for some time because I've seen him play so well in the past. He is awful and I think I'm being kind. If he was an underclassman, I might understand it. He has been a three year starter and a four year player, there are no more excuses. He passes the ball without looking or knowing where defenders are. His inbounds turnover tonight was completely unacceptable. He seems like a really likable human being, but he might be the worst player in our rotation (players that are playing, not sitting) right now. It's why McNeil is getting so much playing time. He is playing pretty well for a true freshman. Right now, we need Squirrel Morris here. There is no way he can be worse than Austin Hollins. He is not our only problem, but I expected a lot more from him given his past play and what should be his senior leadership.

I very much doubt we'll see another game this bad from them. Even if we do, we're sure as hell not gonna see a worse one.

I can't wait till we get rid of all Tubby players.

Can't agree with this anymore. I am smiling at the fact that in two years the only guys left from this team will be King and McNeil (ironically the two guys with a pulse tonight). Tubby did bring some ok talent in here but my god he didn't bring in any competitors.

I doubt I'll be able to do it, but I would really like to avoid this site for 3 days as this place is gonna be a dumpster fire. Terrible game no doubt, but not worth some of the idiocy and overreaction that will no doubt be spewed from some of you.

Enjoy the process fellas, this was a flawed team from day one. Illinois is flawed too, but they decided to play d all game and we decided not to... Next game.

Doing the same thing...sitting in the MPS Hilton and flying to Maui early tomorrow morning...I'll check this on Saturday! We are what we are...nothing can change for this year, but I like the direction of the program. Aloha!

The thing that pisses me off the most is how pitino kept saying we can't take this team lightly, they are good, we can't just mark a W on our schedule, we need our crowd to show up, this is a very important game. Well the crowd showed up just like he wanted, but he and the team did exactly what they said they shouldn't, they were not prepared at all

Wow glad I missed the second half. Seeing the score was a huge bummer though. Almost felt embarrassed as a fan.

you can tell 18-21 year olds not to look past a game over and over. They still will.

Just because he says all the right things doesn't mean he has it all figured out yet. This is the 1st game this year I can clearly say Tubby's team would have won that Richie's team didn't.

Eliot hasn't been the same player as earlier in the year. He's been beating himself up for the past month or so.

Well that was depressing...I guess they just didn't want to show up. We just put ourselves squarely on the bubble if not on the outside looking in. I don't understand how you can play that bad. What makes it even worse was that it was Illionis that we lost to. ILLINOIS!! 3-10 in the Big Ten (Now 4-10). What doesn't help is that Anas was present to see up fall flat on our faces. After all the crap that people where saying about G-Tech sucking it up and how he would see how the barn really is, he didn't see much. I had a feeling that this game would come after how this team has played for the last month. I was just hoping it would happen against a ranked team so it wouldn't matter that much.
