GAME #22: Gophers (15-6, 4-4) v. Northwestern (11-11, 4-5) [BTN, 2/1, 1:00PM)

Mav is decent at spot up 3's, but I don't remember him even attempting one all year.

Oto hasn't done anything this game. Would like to see the effort he brought against Wisconsin.

That's all he should be doing. If he's not shooting spot up 3's he should be keeping the ball moving.

Its all he would be doing if we had a starting PG that could stay in the game.... Pitino has relegated Mav to the 3rd string PG... Guess what, we need that 3rd string PG right now.

give me mo at pg over mav

Mav might be a nice kid but cannot play in the big ten...at least we know McNeil has passed him in pecking order and we should not see him again after Dre gets back. I swear I am watching the Tubby offense when Mav is running the point

Have Malik play point. Anyone other then Mav.

Technically 4th string if you count Dre H. being out. Pitino would rather have 3 guys playing instead of Mav right now but he has to play him a few minutes.

That big Olaf guy is getting so frustrated about big Mo haha.

I thought mo was too far underneath for that to go

NU plays a short bench and just played Wed night. If the Gophers keep pressuring them NU is going to wear down IMO.

Only caught the second half of the first half and it looked really good. I can only imagine the frustration of the first 9 minutes though. Let's have a good second half.

Malik, little Dre and Austin have a combined 6 points and we're 1-9 from 3. You'd like to think it can only get better.

It would be nice if for once our opponent shot a reasonable 3 point percentage.

yep. Can't win games when your opponent shoots the lights out. Unfortunately, this is becoming a theme. Pitino should consider scrapping the ball the doubling (with this current squad), as, like Tubby before him, it does little beyond let your opponent work the ball around easier, which too often results in a decent look from 3.

How do you not attack Crawford when he was in with 2 fouls? He was in for a good 5-6 minutes and, not once, did we deliberately attack him. He will either back off or there's a good chance he'll pick up his 3rd. Crazy that they didn't recognize that.

Why were we acting like there was 5 seconds left on that last possession? We had plenty of time, yet shot way too early.

I get Smith is like most outside shooters, very streaky. But his first half was out of hand. You can't be shooting seven 3-pointers when you're not knocking them down, especially when most of them were not wide open shots.

Great to see Walker playing well. No one else is though. One of the guards needs to step up in the 2nd half.

How to keep opponents from shooting 50% from 3.

I understand it's what Pitino wants to do, but it reminds me of Brew running the spread his 1st year. Trying to jam a square peg in a round hole. Pitino's been more willing to adapt to personnel, but not on this. I'd like to see it used more selectively instead of 100% of the time.

This is a terrible analogy. The ONLY thing that worked for Brew in the first year was Dunbar's spread. The Brew offense got much, much worse in the following years when he scrapped it.

Did you enjoy the second half of the second half of the first half better? Or the first half of the second half of the first half?

3pts

NW 6-13
MN 1-9

Everything else pretty even.

No, Gophers destroying NU on points in the paint. Unfortunately, 3-pointers are worth more. Until teams stop hitting 3s against the Gophers, I'd like to see Pitino spread the D and make sure the outside shot is contested. Note how NU doesn't allow good looks from 3 by us.

Malik wanted to get off a shot before mav got his hands on the ball.

I don't feel good about this game, not without Dre and not without Smith or DeAndre being able to score points, and Austin with no offensive confidence. DeAndre needs to keep driving, and eventually I'd think NU would lose energy and begin to relent inside against the drive. Or at least foul instead of block the shot. But, it's always the game that you should win but that other team plays their ass off (e.g., Nebraska, Arkansas) that come up to bite you. NU is ahead in this game because they're playing harder. Gophers need to pick up the energy after coming out very flat.

How many games in a row have the announcers said, "Quiet first half for Austin Hollins"?

manic Little Dre strikes again. Calm down man.

EE does a great job of fundamentals on about everything but offensive interior post moves. That said, sometimes he (and Mo) shift their hips too hard on the top screens, and they each pick up about one offensive foul a game by doing that (probably deserve more than that). Nice to see Mathieu with the pull-up J, but he's been dribbling into trouble the past two games and that's becoming a bad habit. Dribble in, dish out immediately. He's too short and gets too nervous when he gets trapped by bigger defenders.
