Chip once again showed in the first half why I think he needs more PT. I was disappointed he was so far on the bench in the second half, although he did get a bit of PT in what would be considered crunch time.

The kid can score. Erratic at times?, yes, but he can score and things happen when he's out there. Sometimes bad things, but things nonetheless! I say FREE CHIP!

We're 0-0.

Go Gophers!!

Chip and most of the guys on the bench will get playing time based on who has the hot hand. I've always been a Chip fan so I'm glad he impressed tonight.

Chip had the hot hand and didn't get playing time.

Oh, and Ingram was a mild surprise for me tonight. He has some size and strength and isn't afraid to mix it up a bit. He almost broke the backboard on one play, but he'll be needed this year.

+1

I completely understand that Hollins was playing great in the second half, but this is where Tubby drives me crazy. A kid plays aggresively like that and gives you a 7 point spurt and then he's 20 minutes on the pine. Switch up the line up and get him in back in there!

I wouldn't read too much into it. Chip will get his opportunity to prove his worth.

I really can't think of a better time to allow a kid to prove his worth than when he goes in for 5-6 minutes and lights it up for 7 points and steal. This team desperately needs perimeter players to step up and show that they can score 15 -20 points on a given night. Armelin looked ready to do that tonight, but got very few minutes following his nice first half run. Oh well...........

Armelin also looked pretty bad in the prior exhibition game and got quite a bit of playing time. I trust Tubby will play his best players.

This was by far, the strangest move of the night. Chip was the most productive player in the 1st half - in like 6 minutes he had 7 points, went 3-4 from FG range, and had one steal. I had to ask Tubby this at the post-game presser and his answer was something like: He saved us in the 1st half, played well, needs to see other guys play, realized he didn't have a PG in there, then he said he needed to put guys like Austin in for scoring, FT shooting and D....but then said even though he didn't really shoot well. It was the most random answer, and didn't make sense to me. If you really want to see a full rotation of players, why leave Trevor in for 31 minutes? I'm assuming it's because that's what you needed to win - but Chip had the hot hand and provided that spark, why wouldn't you keep him in to win?

If Tubby was playing his best players - Chip should have gotten a lot more PT from what he showed in that short time. He only got 3 minutes in the 2nd half.

Meanwhile Ralph played awful and got 26 minutes or so. Tubby has "slots" that he appears to have guys fitting in and he has difficulty with changing it to fit the game and performances on the court. Armelin plays behind Hollins. Hollins played well-especially on defense. Tonight - based on how guys played I could have seen a lineup like Welch or Hollins, Hollins, Armelin, Williams and Mbakwe. Tubby refuses to develop perimeter scorers by cutting them loose occasionally. I saw Armelin not take a shot he should have taken in the second half (a rarity for Chip) and you could just tell he didn't shoot it so he wouldn't get pulled.

Tubby has a little bit of an absent minded professor thing going on. That's not a good thing.

Playing time is probably based on practice preformance. There are a lot of Gopher players out there and only Trevor is playing very well right now.

So why is that Bleed? Why do you think Tubby didnt play the hot hand?

Are people worried about chips feelings? Is that it? Austin Hollins played over chip to start the second half and sparked a huge 15-2 run. Damn you tubby for that, damn you!

Like Bleed said. We're 0-0. Bring on Bucknell & the games that actually matter.

Worried? No.

Confused by the substituions/choices the coach has made for the past few years? Yes.

I like Chip, he is aggressive and takes shots, and has some fire in him. Probably my favorite gopher.

It is very clear that many people who call themselves Gopher fans are waiting for Tubby to make a mistake. This is what people in Lexington wish for Tubby and Pitino. I am not sure why they have so much hate for these men. They are paying $5 million a year to a coach that is doing the same as what Tubby and Rick did, "winning". Don't get fooled by those a-holes. Don't go to their website and dig dirt on Tubby. Be a loyal fan. Tubby got unlucky for the last 2 years here. Can you imagine what would have happened if he had his full roster during the last 2 seasons. I bet that wouldn't have been enough for Gopher Lady and the crowd that she has collected. If you call youeself a Gopher fan, be loyal and stop killing the spirit of your coach and players. This is young team that is being evaluated after two meaningless games. Lets have this kind of posts after the season. For now, lets support this team. Chip will get his time. Has this ever come to your mind that Tubby kept Trevor in because he wanted him to do many in-game FTs to be ready for big games. See, I just speculated. Stop these speculations.

I have 3 wishes this year:

1. Gophers do really well in March
2. Texas Tech do really well in March
3. UK gets eliminated in the 1st round in March

No, I am not here because I hate UK. I am here because I love the Gophers and admire the man who coaches them.

Go Gophers

He didn't last year.

Are you kidding? He got plenty of playing time, hell everyone got a lot of playing time because we only had about 8 guys on the roster. Chip's biggest problem is consistency. Once he becomes more consistent he'll get more minutes on a regular basis. How easily people forget his horrible performance against Bemidji. And don't take me as a Chip hater, I love the guy, he is easily one of the best guys at taking it to the hoop, something we don't have a lot of.

I really think this is ridiculous.

Chip didn't get nearly the playing time that Austin received last year when the roster was depleted and it puzzled me. Austin was passive and tentative offensively while Chip was willing to take risks. Neither Austin nor Chip played well against BSU. I wasn't at the game last night but Austin got the major minutes even thought Chip reportedly had a very nice run in the first half. Chip isn't a great player and he isn't a hidden gem, but he plays aggressively. That should have merited more playing time, especially last year.

Austin Hollins plays defense. Chip does not. Tubby will play a defender over a scorer any day of the week. I don't think Tubby has it out for Chip, he just doesn't believe he can defend. I hope he works on he defensive positioning and earns himself minutes.

This is becoming some sort of an urban myth. Chip plays defense. He's not perfect, but I think we can name a lot of other Gophers that are not perfect on defense. Meanwhile, if you go to the games you walk out listening to conversations all over the sidewalk about how terrible the Tubby offense looks. And then for all the emphasis on defense - just how good is ours really. Is it really a stifling defense? A great coach gets good offensive players to perform on defense.

The team needs offensive players, other than Mbwake there aren't any stars on this team, if Tubby doesn't shift his playing time based on performance on a given night it is going to be a long season.

Did you ever walk after the games in Madison or AA? Michigan scored only 47 points against a devision II team. Wisky teams are not great in offense, are they?

Well, let's start with Austin. I LOVED his defensive game last night. The guy is a very smart player who knows how this game is played. He's not the quickest guy on the court but knows how to play defense against quick players. So it's not a mystery why he was out there as many minutes as he was out there.

All that said, I'll be mad if we don't see Chip on the court a lot this year. Theoretically there's no reason that can't be arranged regardless of how many minutes another player X is out there. Last night at the game, one of my season ticket mates asked the rhetorical question, who's the next Gopher featured on the face of one of our game tickets who won't be on the roster by the end of the season? I haven't checked - is Chip on one of the tickets?

Wisky is boring on offense but they are extremely efficient. More importantly they win. It's acceptable to be boring if you win regularly. If you look boring and you are not making appearances in the top half of the conference in four years then some criticism is due. This is not Monson type of criticism. This is not fire Tubby criticism. This is wishing Tubby would show some flexibility and creativity and perhaps hire someone who understands offense on his roster of assistants.

Hollins played great. He was responsible for shutting down #5 in the second half.

Define "a lot". I think can be a great spark plug off the bench when our offense stalls. Something like 5-10 minutes per game. He is very capable of throwing up a lot of shots. He's also very capable of hucking up shots early in the shot clock, turning the ball over, and losing his man on defense.
