Wisky is boring on offense but they are extremely efficient. More importantly they win. It's acceptable to be boring if you win regularly. If you look boring and you are not making appearances in the top half of the conference in four years then some criticism is due. This is not Monson type of criticism. This is not fire Tubby criticism. This is wishing Tubby would show some flexibility and creativity and perhaps hire someone who understands offense on his roster of assistants.

bga1, we argued a few times about this. I am with you. I agree with what you say but I don't start my suggestions until the end of the season. You know a lot about basketball but I don't think you know more than Tubby. We were unlucky during the last 2 years. I don't say 4 years of bad performance. It would be unfair. Lets see what happens this year. Tubby has a limitted offensive plans, I agree but once his defessive plans get executed, it is fun to watch.

By the way, Wisky is only efficient only in Madison. They can never win big in March because refs don't give a damn about Bo's antics at that level.

Ok, I dislike wisconsin and Bo Ryan, but lets make sure we're on the same page when you say "they can never win big in March"

2001-02 NCAA Second Round (8 Seed)
2002-03 NCAA Sweet Sixteen (5 Seed)
2003-04 NCAA Second Round (6 Seed)
2004-05 NCAA Elite Eight (6 Seed)
2005-06 NCAA First Round (9 Seed)
2006-07 NCAA Second Round (2 Seed)
2007-08 NCAA Sweet Sixteen (3 Seed)
2008-09 NCAA Second Round (12 Seed)
2009-10 NCAA Second Round (4 Seed)
2010-11 NCAA Sweet Sixteen (4 Seed)

So that's 1 first round loss, 5 second round losses, 3 sweet sixteens, and 1 elite eight. "Never win big in March" seems a bit strong. Their offense is boring but very effective, they usually have 5 guys on the floor that can knock down 3s at a good percentage.

Good and fair post Real Truth.

Tubby has 10 million more times about basketball than I do. I am a fan- nothing else. I am very hopeful for this year. I make suggestions all year long because I'm simply a fan and I am under no delusion that anyone is going to do what I want done. One thing I will do is root hard for Tubby and the Gophers every game. If he has a top 5 in the Big Ten season and has things moving in the right direction then there will be a whole lot less whining from me about who he puts on the court or how many 3's we give up. Consistent success legitmizes the method. Tubby has had a lot of success in the past but coaches get old and stuck - even some of the great ones. Happened to Keady and a lot of others. I am hoping that's not the case with Tubby.

I do have a lot of respect for you, SS, bleed and a few others on this board who know so much about the game. I also agree with the age reasoning. When I was in WL, I complained so much about Keady. I never liked the time that he and his late wife were throwing the players under the bus. I see that for the 1st time when Tubby did that recently here also. That's why I think if he can't get it done this year, he will retire. Lets hope that he will get it done this year.

My bad, I still hate the style though.

You and Friend of Tubby both went to Purdue and were gigantic fans of Tubby?

Yes, unlike many others, I did like FOT. He was the stat-man. I worked and graduated from Purdue. Because of my dislike for Indiana, I never became a diehard fan of Purdue. I know, it sounds crazy. I also graduated from Belmont and MTSU. As always, Belmont is doing really well. I worked at Vandy for a while so I do cheer for them also. My list of favorite schools and programs is:1. Gophers 2. Belmont 3. Purdue 4. MTSU 5. Vandy.

Tubby has a little bit of an absent minded professor thing going on. That's not a good thing.

Facts, Tubby has forgotten more national championships than you have won! (sarcasm)

It is very clear that many people who call themselves Gopher fans are waiting for Tubby to make a mistake. This is what people in Lexington wish for Tubby and Pitino. I am not sure why they have so much hate for these men. They are paying $5 million a year to a coach that is doing the same as what Tubby and Rick did, "winning". Don't get fooled by those a-holes. Don't go to their website and dig dirt on Tubby. Be a loyal fan. Tubby got unlucky for the last 2 years here. Can you imagine what would have happened if he had his full roster during the last 2 seasons. I bet that wouldn't have been enough for Gopher Lady and the crowd that she has collected.

Sheesh, The-Real-Synchophant. The dude is getting paid over $2MM a year and has delivered mediocre results, yet no one is allowed to question whether he is the right fit? Prediction: Chip gets buried here this year the same way Bostick did in his first year. Tubby simply doesn't like players who create on their own

It’s clear that Smith sees things he likes and things he doesn’t with many of the reserves. A coach’s job is arranging those pros and cons in the most constructive way – in a way that players can play off each others’ strengths.

In his own words on his players – weaving in one breath both the highs and lows -- it’s apparent that he’s been subbing because he’s looking for that second-unit group that he can fully trust, and he hasn’t found the winning formula yet.

“Chip played well, he’s the one that kept us close in the first half, he was very instrumental in making shots and doing things,” Smith said. “But like every other player you try to see him do as many things as you can. At certain times of the game, you’ve got to have better defense or free-throw shooting. There was something I was looking for at the time.

“So I needed guys like Austin, although struggled tonight shooting the ball, 1-for-7, and he turned it over, but he’s our best lockdown defender and I thought he did a good job in the second half.”

Right on Brother!

Dang it. Thought this was going to be a thread about some promotion where fans got free chips at the game. Lord knows I could down 19 bags myself.

Of course, Austin shot 3/7 including 2/5 from deep... who cares about silly little details, though.

Also- "and turned it over" Box score shows had zero turnovers

3 assists, 1 blk, 1 s

Andre was 1-7 and turned the ball over twice. Shame on Tubby for mixing up A. Hollins and A. Hollins.

It's not as simple as a name mix-up.. look closer.

Granted, most press conference comments are blah blah nothings that gives media something to talk about... but sometimes, you just wonder.

He mixed up the stats with the wrong player. I get it.

Whatever keeps you busy JB.

Ignore the stats. He said he liked that a guy played good defense so he kept him in there even though he was struggling shooting (although he wasn't struggling shooting the ball and hit two treys). I'm not saying it's a big deal - but it's not simply an 'ooops, he called player A by player B's name'.

Like I said, I get it. I also don't think it's a coincidence that he quoted Dre Hollins' stats.

I don't think you do get it. He was not calling Andre our best lockdown defender, so their for he was indeed talking about Austin and really f'd it up.

Clearly he doesn't.

I continue to love this kids swagger. I'm more than willing to put up with his negatives to get him on the floor more. He's fantastic in transition, has moxie and some creativity within his game that we don't have enough of.

Yes! And I contend the main reason why he tried to shoot so much, esp early in the year, was out of necessity. Playing on the "second team" someone had to try to score.

+1

I completely understand that Hollins was playing great in the second half, but this is where Tubby drives me crazy. A kid plays aggresively like that and gives you a 7 point spurt and then he's 20 minutes on the pine. Switch up the line up and get him in back in there!

Agreed. Tubby is generally risk averse and Chip is an aggressive risk taker. That's why he spends way too much time on the pine and players like Mav (who played very well today) get too much court time. Chip should get 24-28 minutes a game.

Has Tubby ever went wit a starting five of

PG-Welch
SG-Chip
SF-Austin Hollins
PF-Rodney
C-Ralph

??

No. Before Coleman moved into the starting lineup Mav was the PG and Welch the SG. I don't think Chip could play with such aggressiveness if he started.
