Couldn’t happen soon enough. What a jerk. This time he won’t have to slip out of town without talking to his players and assistants, they already know.

IIRC football literally built that school, d as so they’re on a whole another level than the U.

True. UVa just redid the athlete's village with one donor paying a large chunk. If that person wants to keep the coach I imagine they can.

Quick peek at his bio shows mostly offensive coaching roles but I highly doubt he will end up going the position coach role. He won't have trouble finding a head coaching gig if he wants one....question will be if he wants one or if he would rather enjoy PSU's money while doing something else like TV or whatever.

I’d be sitting on that 49M or whatever it is. Wonder if he gets one big check?
 

With Fleck and Franklin reportedly being pretty close, I wonder if that could help pull some talent from Happy Valley?

Nebraska's coach, Rhule - played for Paterno at Penn State, had three years with the AD at another school and they are close. Nebraska may be playing to "win one for the coach" Friday night.
 


It was rumored Adidas influenced the decision and was paying the buyout. When asked, they deferred questions to the university. The university denied it.

Why would Adidas defer a question like that to the school? If they didn’t have anything to do with it wouldn’t they just come out and say that?

What am I missing?

or they are distracted. I like Matt Rhule and think he is a good coach. However, he has no track record of sustaining a program. He's never been in a position longer than 4 years. He's turned some programs around, but would he just sustain at Franklin's level or better? This is why the firing is so head scratching. If the AD is walking from Franklin who has five, 11-win seasons in eleven seasons, coming off a final 4 appearance when the playoffs changed allowing for him to be successful without beating tOSU and Michigan. The AD either has Rhule committed or he panicked.

I really have trouble believing that one.


I can’t imagine going to the board at adidas and saying that you threw $49 million away so some school can hire a new coach and potentially get worse…

Or he feared they would finish 5-1 and make him look bad pulling the plug then.

I think that is a lot of it. Cut bait, take calls, and evaluate internal coaches. AD was looking at 0-6 in BIG in three weeks potentially.

Franklin was a CEO coach so it will be interesting to see what the OC and DC do with him out of the building. Now playing freshmen QB.

Don't like their chances in the next 3 games and the last 3 could be a challenge also. 2-7 conference record or worse potentially.
 

Sometimes it’s just time. Things get stale, predictable. Change is exciting in sports and hope springs eternal, sells tickets and stories and PR. JJ McCarthy. Luke Fickell, Paul Chryst, Jim Leonhard. Sometimes reality comes at you fast, regret sets in. Sometimes you’ll hit the motherlode, like Indiana

Chryst was a good football coach and even a better offensive coordinator. Leonhard would have been a pretty good hire. You have to wonder if they burnt that bridge.

I heard this as well. How can this be when they’re a Nike school?
