Former Players Reaction to Tubby being fired

Dame ‏@VIPJohnson34 @AmeliaRayno that exactly what caused problems with the last couple teams the players couldn't handle old school style compared to my sr yr

Isn't DJ a little young to be doing the "back in my day" routine? :)

Holy Man asks a good question - does that say more about the coach or the players? At the end of the day, though, it comes down to whether an approach works or not. It was clear to me the players were not confident and calm out there. They seemed confused at times. Bob Knight was as hard nosed as they come, but Keith Smart knew just what to do and had his own and his coach's confidence that he'd knock down that shot. I keep going back to Smith yelling at Dre last night for doing what he HAD to do to win the game - shoot the ball. I can't help but come to the conclusion that Tubby couldn't get out of his team's way at times.

Agree. This is one area I saw GopherPlaya's comments. It isn't about yelling and being tough. Coach K yells. A lot. But his teams still play with confidence and purpose. Whatever Tubby was doing as an old school way, was not relating well to the players in the same way guys like Coach K, Frank Martin, etc. do.

Frank struggled with his players a bit this year. I saw that on a viral youtube. Made Tubby seem like a softy.

Good to see Devoe add a grown up comment to the mix.

Agreed. I don't think Devoe particularily cared for Tubby, but a very mature thing to see about his dismissal. I am happy for Devoe that that was his response. Makes me think he has grown up a lot and hopefully continues to succeed!

Good lord man. Give it a rest. He is gone so stop writting crap. Practice for the next coach. Don't compare people. Tubby has been a winner in every place that he has been. Your beloved FS had his chance to make it big in NBA when he had KG. Why would you clawns think that he could do better than Tubby here is driving me crazy. The foundation of this program is wrong. Stop listening to the kids who may or may have not liked a coach. How many CEOs do you who are loved by all the employees? Like Monson, Tubby will be a winner in another program and you losers on the GH will be crying about the new coach and why MN didn't make the dance for the next 5 years at least.

Not really true. Glen Taylor and Mchale definitely hurt those chances... Did you see Monson's team in the NIT this year? Or Tubby's team under achieve this year?
Not every employee needs to like its CEO, but if he doesn't produce results, he's going to be scrutinized. If the CEO doesn't get along with board members, executives, and fails to create a successful culture, then he's fired.

Just using your "practical" comparison for reference.

Devoe Joseph ‏@DevoeJoseph grateful for everything i learned under Coach Smith n his staff it made me a better player in the end i wish him n the uofm goodluck

I also found this tweet interesting. Devoe seemed to enjoy Tubby.

How about being fired from Pistons? We can always make excuses. Like I said, we'll see who will be here next. NT thinks that a Jay from VU will come here? Is that a joke? When a place is being run with stone-aged facility, there is a little chance to land a big-name coach. We will be here for the next few years and post negative posts like you all did for Tubby. Lets see if the MN players that are the targets chose to come here. If not, the next coach will have the same problem as did Tubby and Monson.

Some on here viewed Devoe as a punk, but I never saw him that way. Maybe didn't have his act completely together yet, but not a punk.

You can't really blame Glen Taylor, he gave out a TON of money. He is the reason the players' salaries got restructured and he had no issue with spending a ton of money. The loss of first round picks hurt, but Flip failed at MN and made Detroit and Washington worse when he was there. He was not a good NBA basketball coach.

You can't scorn us in Minnesota without being a punk! He was the key to the program and only became a punk when he made a really bad decision to leave. We are a bit fickle here.

Refreshing comment. Maybe he realized he wasn't as good as he thought and/or grew up a little. Gained some respect for Devoe today.

When Trevor Mbakwe is saying he didn't relate well to some of the players I think it makes sense.

I said all along I trusted Teague and Ellis to make the right decision, whichever way it went. They made that decision. Now I am looking forward to our next hire and supporting him the way I have Tubby for 6 years. Unlike some fans here, I am not a Tubby fan/basher, I am not a Norwood Teague fan. I am a fan of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers and will cheer for and support anyone who gives or has given their time and effort to this school. Tubby Smith will always be a Gopher to me and I am glad I am not entrusted to make basketball hiring and firing decisions. However, Tubby Smith is no longer the coach here and while I will always respect and root for him and I think he did improve this program from where it was formerly, there is a new coach coming, some new freshman, etc. that I cannot wait to cheer for and support as they work to make the University of Minnesota great! I am sad to see Tubby go as well, but I am also excited to see the direction that Minnesota goes. My fandom isnt rooted solely in Tubby Smith, it is rooted in the maroon and gold.

Sure Bob. He won over 500 games in the NBA and has an overall winning record. You can't blame Flip for the Pistons attempting to re-build after years of success. That's the eb and flow of the NBA. I would say the Pistons are one of the least talented team to make an NBA Finals in the last 20 years. And how can you blame him for Washington's woeful front office?
Last thought- Glen Taylor deserves alot of blame for following through with the Joe Smith deal and he also deserves alot of blame for keeping Mchale as GM for so long. Then again it's his money so he can do what he'd like.

Good comment. Sums up my persepctive and I suspect many others as well. Thanks.

Pistons decided to rebuild because of Flip. He couldn't get them over the edge and the Pistons never played in the NBA Finals with Flip. They won it with Larry Brown.

Washington, he absolutely deserves some blame. He did a dreadful job there and was run out of town. They haven't done much since, but that's partially on the front office trying to make Flip happy (trading the #5 pick for Mike Miller and Foye (veterans)). Washington was bad when Flip arrived, but worse when he left even though they added John Wall (who absolutely did not develop under Flip).

McHale and Taylor also brough Flip a ton of talent. He had a similar amount of talent as Doc Rivers when he was able to get a ring with KG 1 year removed from Flip.

Flip made a name because of KG. His "success" with the Wolves got him a job with a built in good team in Detroit, and they got worse. He parlayed that into a job in Washington, that was a disaster.

Let me guess you thought McHale was a good GM and coach?

Thank you. Dream of unproven college coach is something that people on this board have had for a while. You don't what you had until the next coach gets here. Dream of beating number one team in the country will be here for many many years.

Brandon is definitely not Gopherplaya he said he shaved Tubby's mustache.

So....

Wally > Pierce
Sprewell > Ray Allen
Candy Man > Perkins
Sam I Am > Rondo

Makes total sense.

I hope you all really do not think I am Brandon Smith nor Damian johnson. As you can see like I said before former players and people that are close to the program as myself. We all know what really goes on behind closed doors. I for one am happy Tubby has been relieved of his duties, as coach of the Gopher mens basketball team. I would agree Brandon may have went about letting his frustrations with tubby out the wrong way. At the same time I have talked to numerous players who have describe the way they feel about tubby in the same context. Players can not come out against tubby and say what they would like. They have to play the politics game. Think about this 6 players transferred in 4 years during his tenure, That just does not add up to the causal fan it definitely would make me scratch my head.

Beside that I am happy he is gone I know alot of other people who are happy he is gone. I think that was the best decision the University could have made and I applaud them for having the BALLS! to do so. I think the program needed a breath of fresh air and Tubby was just not the right fit at all. I am excited to see who will be coming next year maybe Flip, Smart , or Stevens I can not wait to find out.

GO Gophers!

I disagree with you Bob. Hopefully the U does as well, and I'll be a very happy Gopher fan if they hire Flip.

Welcome back. I still don't think they all hate him like Brandon Smith does. I think Trevor for one doesn't HATE him. I don't think Damien HATES him either. They may not have loved playing for him, I just take issue with the word hate. I can't imagine they ALL truly elite be him to be the devil and a horrendous human being.

Either way, the decision has been made and I am excited to see who we hire as well. I am also excited to see current players reactions, recruiting, and what other dominos may fall. Never a dull moment with Gopher basketball.

but Flip failed at MN and made Detroit and Washington worse when he was there. He was not a good NBA basketball coach.

Flip's last year: 59 wins - Conference Finals

Year after Flip: 34 wins

Yep, it was Flip's fault.

The Twolves have risen to meteoric heights with Flip out of the picture.
