This kind of reminds me of Notre Dame's head coaching search back in 2005, when it seemed about like they couldn't give the job away, and especially for freaking Notre Dame. You'd think they'd have coaches beating down their doors, but not so much, at least back then. I remember them being repeatedly spurned by their top targets, most notably Urban Meyer, who'd been on Notre Dame's staff but decided that he'd rather go to Florida. They were also rejected by Steve Mariucci and Bobby Petrino, and there were several other high profile guys whom I can't remember who publicly said 'No' to Notre before they finally landed Charlie Weiss, and that didn't work out so well for them either.
At the time I was wondering if that was some sort of payback for the way they'd given Tyrone Willingham the shaft, and coaches saw that and were like "Ya know what? If this is how you treat your coaches, then forget you!".
