FootballScoop: Hoke, Calhoun, Edsall and Chryst tell U they are NOT interested in job

IMO, Kirby Smart would be the best hire on that list. Maybe one of the best hires they could make. I am a big fan of his.

Again, these are just names that have been mentioned once upon a time and have not allegedly told Minnesota they are not interested.

With that said, now that the Vanderbilt job is open I can't see Smart taking a Big 10 job. He is an SEC guy and will get his shot this year I feel. At least if he wants it.

I know, I was just pointing out I like Smart. I don't think we hire him. He seems pretty loyal to Saban.

I doubt Maturi issues a "final stages" letter and then has all of his leading candidates say "no thanks" ... if that's what happened we really are in trouble. I doubt it though.

I agree with others, I think Maturi has his guy and should be finalizing things. Can't wait to see who it is.

The more I read about Golden as well, I think he would be a GREAT hire. Sure, his overall record at Temple isn't a winning one, but ...

He has been steadily improving each year with his recruits.

I was keen on Smart when we were all pretending we were a search firm. However, when I called him he had the audacity to ask me who I was, so I hung up on him.

Wait! Maybe he does. I thought for a second it might be Mike Riley since there was lots of speculation around Mike Belotti.

Riley was one of Crazy Joe's 5 to ponder. I would be very content with him at the helm.

If it's Larry freaking Fedora, I'm going to puke.

Same. His two CFL Gold Cups are what finally swayed me.

He's signed with the Beavs through 2019 or something, though. Would not be cheap to get him.

And as for Mike Riley...he's a great coach, but he is almost 60 years old and would be mega-expensive. Who wants to start over when they're approaching retirement age?

If this is real news - which I doubt - I think it's good news. An announcement could be coming very soon, and we all might just be pleased.

And leave the town he grew up in... It is one name out there that I cannot think of a reason for him to leave.

Tubby Smith?

If we are going to play this game with Crazy Joe (and why not?), here are the five names he gave us while back, and their current states:

Fedora (Mississippi), Riley (Oregon), Calhoun (Colorado), Schiano (New Jersey) and Hoke (California).

The only two on that list who meet his parameters are Fedora (Mullen) and Riley (Belotti).

Tedford Cal? This is kind of a fun game.

It doesn't mean the coach said no. This sort of leak this late in the process often means that the hiring university passed on these coaches, but the leak is a soft landing that allows a coach to save face. It's far more common than you realize.

I agree. Also, it would be pure stupidity for anyone at the U to leak that Hoke or anyone else is out of the picture. Say for argument's sake that Maturi is negotiating salary with Mullen's agent. You want to at least create the illusion that there's some competition for the job.

Someone posted the other day that maybe Maturi is "leaking" some of these rumors to individuals on his staff, and then seeing what tweets come out on the blogosphere. Good way to identify the "deep throat". Judging by the number of rumors out there, though, if this was the case Maturi's staff may be more of a sieve than the hockey team's goalie (this past w/e excepted).

PA SHOW PAGE

They are going to do a bracket for the Gopher coaching job and then have voting on the site. They want names. They are putting Paul Chryst as the #1 see and Horton as the #16 seed. email little Nelson with names to be included in the poll.

Problem is they want to have it up by Wednesday. Will we have a coach by then?

PA thinks Chryst is the #1 target from the people he talks to.

Tubby Smith?

Mike Riley does not equal Tubby Smith. Tubby Smith did not grow up in Lexington. Mike Riley is not under tremendous pressure and on the verge of being fired, looking for a soft landing. Sorry the situations are not even close.

Spare me. If it's Trestman or Chryst I'm taking at least a year off from Gopher football. If it's Fedora I'll just be extremely unimpressed. I'd rather have Horton then any of these 3.

This is just getting ridiculous.

We have one report saying that Cryst isn't interested, then we have PA saying the people he talks to says he is the top candidate. I guess both can be true.

I love PA, but I think this shows just how much he follows college football.

I am like an addict. I just want to sit back and wait for the coach to be hired, but I can't help myself. I am constantly surfing the web looking for the latest rumors. Why do I do this to myself?

IF

IF the Scoop rumors are true, my money is on Golden being the pick. Golden was not on the list of non-candidates so he is still under consideration. He apparently said he would have interest in Vanderbilt. Nobody who can get or has a real coaching job is interested in Vanderbilt. It is the Siberia of the SEC and probably college football in general. You stay at Temple rather than go to Vandy. A statement like that by Golden can only mean that he is trying to drive up his bargaining power with some other school by playing hard to get.

Did you read the question I was answering? I didn't say the situations were close.

OK. I did misread it. So are you implying that Tubby will take another job and leave MN even though he's approaching 60? I still don't see the comparison to Riley.

Should I go ahead and shoot them a text message that Mike Leach just left the athletic offices on campus.

If true, we've lost three very good tier 2 candidates. But the same source says Mullen is still out there and he may be the best of that bunch, though Edsall may be headed for a BCS bowl (this will change when TCU joins the conference!).

I'd still rather have a tier 1 coach - maybe there is one.
