It would depend on the terms of the contracts, but WMU is going to hire a new coach who will want his own staff, so there isn't likely to be much of a problem even if the coaches have contracts that last another year (and don't automatically terminate when the HC leaves).

These posts should last until they are fired. I love the Fleck hire. I expect it to work out. Damage control over damage you helped create is not something to brag about. Remember Defense wins games. Sawvel deserves serious consideration, but Fleck has to hire "his guy." That might be Sawvel, it might not.

Of course he can. It's standard operating position for the AD to let the entire staff go when the head coach is fired. There's usually one or two coaches left for the transition (as is the case here), and they're typically not coordinators. Firing most of the staff doesn't mean some wouldn't be allowed back.

I keep reading that Sawvel is unlikely to return in part because more of the suspended/expelled guys were defensive players. Maybe it's just me, but I can't believe that would matter, as if Jay Johnson would be looked at more favorably, for example, because there were fewer offensive players. And I know Sawvel had some comments immediately following the announcement of the suspensions, but if the new $18 million face of the program wanted Sawvel back because it would help the program move forward, I'd bet he could make it happen.

I'd think that if Coyle even allowed Fleck to bring Sawvel back he would be brought in as a position coach rather than DC to send a message that you can't disrespect the boss. More realistically, I'd guess is that Fleck will bring in all new people, and that shortly after signing day Sherels and O'Brien will either get jobs at some other school or transition out of coaching into the Athletic Department or receive "offers they couldn't refuse" in the private sector. I'll be surprised if there is a coach that was on the staff as of the Bowl game that is around for the start of the season next year.

I would have no issue being wrong and having most or all of the defensive staff come back, but I really doubt it.

As far as Fleck's staff and a buyout, most assistant coaches' contracts are year to year, so I'd be surprised if there is any buyout, especially once Fleck left. Usually that act would allow the assistants to leave at will. Also, I'm not sure I've heard of an assistant coach that had to pay a buyout to move on. I think most are one way buyouts if there is one (other than head coach).

Maybe. ML7 ran more than avg to avoid and we didn't throw many long balls that would have required more protection time, but it is a fair point. On the other hand I was not impressed with our run blocking at all.

O-line play was much better this past season, but it wasn't great. And like Limey at PSU, too many times when we need a first down, the o-Line got beat. I'd say no reason to fire him based o. Last year, but no screaming reason to keep him either. WMU's o-line looked better v. Whisky than ours did, overall.

What is the fascination with retaining anyone from the previous staff? It's not like we were #1 in defense. I'm sure there are many qualified guys to be hired. Heck, nobody here knew who claeys or sawvel were 6yrs ago. Let Fleck decide who he wants in the boat.

Wow, what is the deal here? I was not the biggest hire PJ supporter, but his WMU total defense was ranked 26 in the nation. Gophs were ranked 21. Big difference is WMU's total offense was ranked in the top 20....Gophs in the bottom 20.

Gophs will be fine on both side of the ball in 2017. Relax everyone.

With MAC level players. Gophs have better players, facilities, resources.

Played 3 B1G teams and held them close to WMU's season average for points scored. Sky is not falling, folks.
 

Sawvel is good as gone, new DC is Robb Smith.
 

The biggest argument for retaining Sherels is that, he's our best instate recruiter, with very good relationships with the high school coaches.

Interesting hire. But 76th in SEC might not be too bad. Will have to check that one out.

I some cases that's true. And in some cases you have a bigger budget to attract better people, even if you like the ones you have.

Served as OC and TE coach this year, but I assume he would be OL/OC here.

Fleck said the #1 thing is recruiting and he must believe these guys are going be both better coaches and recruiters at this level.
