I'm excluding all head coaches from the SEC.
I think there are a couple of SEC guys who might jump to Minnesota if the situation/pay was right.
Mississippi State head coach
Chris Jans grew up 3 hours from the Twin Cities and has won everywhere he's been, including some of the lower levels where he has won BIG, including a national JUCO title. Was part of the Wichita State staff when they were rolling, including a Final Four and a 35-0 team heading into the NCAA Tourney. He has the baggage from the Bowling Green situation, which could eliminate him at Minnesota. But, he seems to have resurrected his career. And, jumping from Mississippi State to Minnesota would follow the path taken by Murray Warmath. He coaches a hard-nosed, tough brand of ball. He played college hoops in the Midwest and has coached in the Midwest.
South Carolina head coach
Lamont Paris has Midwest and Big Ten roots, including a long stint as Bo Ryan's assistant at Wisconsin. Has successful head coaching experience at two levels and he has put South Carolina back on the map in a short time.
Again, no idea if either would want the job, but I wouldn't eliminate either, given their Midwest roots. And, I'd be fine with either, honestly.
We'd have to outbid a couple of SEC programs, of course, so maybe it is unrealistic. I suppose it also depends on how each guy likes warm weather or cares if it gets cold. But, the south isn't for everyone, either.
