ESPN: Grand Valley State suspends OC Morris Berger for wanting meal with Adolf Hitler

Didn't you throw a fit about people standing at a game?

Yes. Any gentelment worth spit would defend the right of women in their seventies not to have to stand for four hours straight in order to see the band perform at half time. Who could say otherwise? Only a pig.

His bad decisions and poor leadership are a matter of record, and it has been studied. A lot. Certainly enough for even an offensive coordinator to know it doesn't represent good leadership. You make it sound like nobody has gotten around to that yet.

I have to admit I am a bit tired of talking about Hitler today. I may have to move on to go read some more of Talon's misspellings.

“The first principle of a free society is an untrammeled flow of words in an open forum."
(Adlai E. Stevenson, 1900-1965, American Lawyer, Politician)”
― Adlai E. Stevenson

Gone are the days when Democrats believed such thoughts, I guess.

"A few bigots"? He won the election and was thereby Chancelor of Germany, fair and square. This nonsense that he was not hugely popular in Germany by promoting views that were in no material way different than the views of the Democratic Party of America in the late 1930's is dangerous and false. Hitler's greatest acheivement was he made racism into a bad thing, something that it was not in the world in the late 1930's. It was the "good" thing. For example, in this country, you could not sell Ford automobiles unless you sold the Ford company newspaper which regularly featured anti Semetic articles on the front page. Charles Lindburg (sp?) refused to fight against the Nazis' in WWII.

PS I am not Jewish, but I do know my history.

In a storm, any port will do. IIRC Economic conditions and other factors that were carryovers from WWI helped Hitler rise to power.

As of 1998, The Germans I spoke with were not proud at all of WWII. They seemed very remorseful. What I found refreshing is they didn't hide from it. They acknowledged that it was an ugly chapter in their history. I got the impression that most all were committed to it (the Holocaust) never happening again. I pray that it stays that way for eternity.

Angela Merkel

If the coach wanted to choose a leader from Germany or Austria, he should have chosen Chancellor Merkel.

The current difference between humans and AI is that we can feel. We have feelings, emotion, etc. We can understand nuances. I could go on and on.

If one represents an organization, they have to be smart enough to know how to communicate effectively. The OC/ coach in question failed miserably.

I would have chosen Churchill. His whole life was one of fun and fury. As a terrible student, he blew up the school water well. One of his first speeches caused a riot. His comments were the constant cause of humor and ill will.

I am not sure if I have ever heard a single joke about Hitler, so give me a moment...

A senior Nazi visits a factory and asks the manager whether he still has Social Democrats among his workforce.
"Yes, 80 percent," comes the reply.
"Do you also have members of the Catholic Center Party?"
"Yes, 20 percent," the manager responds.
"Don't you have any National Socialists?"
"Yes we're all Nazis now!"

I stumbled upon an American - German who fell in love with Hitler after hearing one of his speeches, who claimed to have come up with the phrase "Sieg Heil", modeled after a Harvard Football chant. His name was Ernst Hanfstaengl. Not sure if that is true or not. But, the OSS had a dossier on Hitler that states it is true.

I think it’s ridiculous that a coach can’t answer honestly without being suspended. Clearly he acknowledged it wouldn’t go over well, he knew people would take it the wrong way, and then what did people do? Took it the wrong way. Can’t speak of Hitler in any way, except negatively. This is pathetic. Say goodbye to free speech
Holy smokes

Replying to Schnauzer, who is tired of talking about Hitler today....

Yep, we have beaten this one to death, and then some. Beating-Dead-Horse-GIF.gif

As a public institution if they terminate this guy they will lose the lawsuit which will follow. Nothing he said is grounds for dismisal in that he clearly is not endorsing Hitler in any way. Indeed, he does exactly the opposite.

As mentioned above, if they fire him they will lose because emotions are not the same as logic.

Not every victory is a victory. We just agree to disagree.

Regarding Logic, if you know that something you say is offensive and you say it anyway, then you can expect negative (most would say just) responses.

Used by Stevenson in his campaign against Eisenhower so it is correctly attributed to him in that context. He did say it. Why is WTF needed by you in this, or any, regard?
I'm not sure who "Adlie" Stevenson was, but if he even did say it (doubtful), he didn't invent the phrase. You don't get to repeat an existing phrase and attribute it to yourself. That's not how it works.

Wrong. Michigan, like most states, is an at-will state, meaning he can be fired for any reason or no reason at all, assuming the reason is outside of a protected basis (gender, religion, nationality, etc.). Do you ever get tired of being wrong in virtually every post you make?

Are you sure that quote isn't from Adlie Louis Stevenson?

After reading this thread and careful thought, I do not want to have lunch (or even meet) Hitler.

Is there anyone here that would?

After the Beer Hall Putsch, Hitler fled to a friends home, where they talked him out of suicide. I would love to have been there at that moment. I would have handed him the rope to hang himself.

Although, there’s a lot of people that I don’t want to eat with, but I do. As much as I’d like to say that if I were invited to a lunch with Hitler, that I wouldn’t go, I’m really not sure. Like, I wouldn’t seek it out, but not sure if I wouldn’t be really curious should the opportunity present itself.

Then there’s the situation of you being at lunch and your friend is dining with Hitler and they invite you to eat with him. Even if you decline, your friend insists that you sit down with him. I’m not sure what I do there.

He was just being dramatic. Have you seen that guy's facebook? All vague angsty posts...

Ok, so I’m enjoying a meal at the bar and the only open seat is next to me and Hitler sits down and eats. I’m kind of dining with him, but not intentionally. I think I’d finish my meal and leave quickly.

After further thought, if one were to see Hitler, I’d think that they’d have to call law enforcement, right?

If the answer is "no", so what? He did, so what? Again are we restricted to not meeting people you do not like or even "everyone" does not like?

Another one of your endless pronounements over who is worthy to express an opinion. Always personal, always the snark you profess to hate. Let's see what they do with their "case" against him.

Would you? I think it’s an interesting question, given the opportunity would you dine with Hitler?

I can only think of a relatively small number of people I would want to dine with. Hitler I understand and would not have any need to learn more from him. But, that is me. I can not imagine wanting to control who dines with whom. Why would I care? I shun no one, I just don't seek them out.

Say Hitler is at a Gopher Game, drunk, and standing in the way of your view. Would you talk to him to ask him to sit down or avoid it because he is Hitler?

Get the police, have him arrested, hope they hang him. Same as with any of the sub humans who stand for the whole game without ever sitting down. Rude, ignorant bastards.

After reading this thread, I have to listen to the Boomtown Rats classic song, "I never loved Eva Braun."

Bob Geldof was a hell of a song-writer before he decided saving the world was more fun than making music.
