Bad news on the rumor mill.

Buried in the Engel thread:

just one mention on twitter

#GingerStacheMan ‏@Domino_WWBD 8h

ICYMI: #Gophers WR Derrick Engel tore his ACL in practice last night. Season is over. No joke, my source is legit. Awful break for the team

Never heard of the guy

I haven't either. Hard to tell if he's blowing smoke.

Didn't Engel have an ankle sprain? I find it hard to believe the coaches would be pushing him hard in practice to put him in a situation where he would tear his ACL. I guess we will see if this is just blowing smoke.

He first reported this about 12 hours ago. This would be roughly 3 hours after practice. I find it hard to believe he would be able to get an MRI that quickly. This is not the NFL where they have immediate access to medical equipment. I could be wrong though. Maybe I'm in denial.

Who do we have to replace him? Victor Kiese, Logan Hutton, KJ Maye, Isaac Fruechte? Is Jamel Harbison available? Is it time for Eric Carter or KJ Maye to shine?

Carpe diem. This is the game of a lifetime. Someone needs to step out of the shadows. Play as this is literally your last game ever!

Win this game, and it will be talked about for years. This is the pivotal moment in Jerry Kill's turn around of the program, the signature win if I may say. This will top the Nebraska win if we can pull it off.

The @Domino_WWBD (What Would Bud [Grant] Do - clever name) reported last night that it "happened yesterday", meaning Sunday.

The Gophers dont have practice on mondays

Well, I guess we'll find out if it's true or not in a few hours when Kill has his press conference. If true, this sucks. It'd be terrible news for the team and for Engel, a senior who has played so well and was about to play a huge rivalry game.

I will hold off until I hear it from the coaching staff.

Hopefully we get the ball to Donovahn Jones even more if this is true.

We so need Rashad Canty to commit with his YAC ability.

We are going to see a heavy dose of Donovan Jones the next two games. Hopefully he can be sure handed.

If this was earlier in the year, I would panic. But, after seeing Wolitarsky & Jones have done in the last few weeks, there is still some apprehension, but the panic level is down.

uggggggg.

If this is true, you can tear an ACL while wearing sweat pants running a simple practice pattern. I wouldn't assume this is because the team was going all out in practice. In fact, I would guess that would be highly unlikely.

This is pretty much the last thing the team needs heading into these last two games. Total bummer (if true).

Also... there has been a lot of talk about Karma lately. I find this strange this should happen right at the time when a new thread crops up about AJ Barker - full of a lot of posts describing how little we need him.

disclaimer: before people start ripping on this comment with "we don't need a quitter" or "we wouldn't want a guy of that character anyway" - I get that. I'm referring to his ability, not his personality or character.

I once tore my MCL just kneeling down to pick up something. I just had recent back surgery and was over compensating and didn't know it. It created an imbalance and started the strain. So, yes you don't have to do anything strenuous. I believe the effect is cumulative and not tied to a singular rigorous activity. The ligament just finally reached its limits. If I recall, it took about seven months for me to fully recover. You have to do all sorts of strengthening exercises to get back to normal.

If this is true, I feel bad for Engel.

Link to someone credible who can confirm this so called 'report'?

Won't believe it until I see that.

We still don't have a credible source. But the silence is not a good sign. If it was false, someone would have come out and called BS. The silence means they are hiding something.

Really sucks if true for Engle and the Gophers. Kid was having a really good year.

FWIW, I know Ginger Stache Man, there would be no reason for him to lie about this.

Man, I'm with you e, but as crazy and improbable as it seems, I fear it's true. My first instinct was denial, then my heart sank, then my optimist side kicked in and I thought how fortunate this happened Sunday, so we have the whole week to make adjustments. It would have been tougher if it happened in pregame this Saturday.
