Drake is not a dime a dozen - this kid has a high ceiling. Could very well go down as the best QB we have had since Weber. Must I remind you that we are talking about a freshman here.

How do you quantify high ceiling?

How many "high ceiling" guys don't work out in college?

I hear what you're saying but I think last year's offense would have been one of our worst if not for good QB play. We did very little to help him out. Our receivers weren't great, we couldn't run the ball, and our offensive line struggled.

You're not wrong, at times, he was certainly part of the problem. But, IMO, more times than not, he was about the only person doing anything.

Did Drake play like a RS Freshman? At times. Did he overcome some significant obstacles and keep the team moving forward, as you noted? He absolutely did. There are no guarantees of what will happen, but the biggest things holding Drake back are the offensive philosophy, the offensive line play, and a lack of difference-makers in the receiving core. None of that has anything to do with his talent.

I think the most interesting thing in the data is that there are a few young QBs in the B1G that got headlines all year, and Drake is right there, according to PFF.

Of course, PFF suggests Athan was a better QB this year, so there's that. I would like to see Drake with a pair of receivers like Rutgers had this year.

No guarantees with Drake or any other player for that matter. But for a redshirt freshman he played really well last year and if he keeps developing he has a very high ceiling.

Could easily go down as one of the greatest QBs in Minnesota history (not a really high bar) and it is not crazy to think he has a chance to develop into one of the better college QBs by the time he is done.

The biggest thing that I look to is the fact that he didn't make a lot of freshman mistakes last year in spite of his lack of experience. Tons of room for growth, but if he puts in the work he could do some great things here.

I was making a qualitative statement - it's a gut feeling. Do you not think the kid has high potential?

About as good of a freshman campaign as we could have reasonably asked for given the situation.

Agreed 1000%

I have grown to learn that most MN sports fans are overly pessimistic, are never satisfied, and will always assume the worst. Such is the case with Drake and JJ.

Regardless of total offensive production, Drake did one important thing multiple times that many QBs seldom do. He led the team on important 4th quarter drives to put them in a position to win (Rutgers, Purdue, MSU, Northwestern*). It's hard to teach "clutch".

And somewhat like Brosmer, Drake often went through his progressions. Nice to have a QB that doesn't only consider one option.

I'd take Morgan and Max over Weber but I agree that Drake could end up the best Gopher QB of all time.
