I see Doogie felt it necessary to rip Brewster again in the Red Star this morning. Way to go Doogie. I guess the first 2 or three blogs saying the same thing were not enough. You actually reported on the Gophers bad November and bad offenee without once, not even a little mention of MN losing Decker and how that affected the offense and the team. No mention at all of 40 years of losing and how Brewster has only had three years to change things. No mention of the utterly terrible talent left by Mason when Brewster took over. No mention of the Gophers 2009 schedule. One of the hardest in the country. No mention that our end of the year schedule included road games at PSU, at OSU and at Iowa. No mention of the fact that the Gophers actually beat 3 bowl teams this year. No mention of the fact that Brewsters three recruiting classes, (the 07 class does not count) have all been way over what Mase was ever able to accomplish and that those players were all sophs, red-shirted freshmen or freshmen this past season.

Do these facts make a case for Brewster being a good coach? No. But anyone trying to fairly judge Brewster this season should mention them as contributing factors. His blog was blatently unfair and served the purpose in which it was written. The purpose that he denies. That the jury is in on Brewster and he is not the man for the job. Oh, and now he can strut around his KFAN buddies by joining the boys in their hatred of Brewster.

I would actually argue that this was his most fair and honest piece to date.

I had no problem with it.

I decided to read one of these articles. I have to admit I was sadly disappointed in the lack of dots. Usually that is where the information you are requesting lies. You just have to know how to read braille.

mingg -- I heard my good friend, PA, go hard at Brewster this morning, and not at times back up his statements. We can have a civil conversation: I don't claim to have all the answers, but I am asked to take a stance with those blogs, and I did.

Your points: Anyone hired would've done a better job recruiting than Mason ... how those players are coached up, or not coached up, is the issue ... Brewster overcompensated in the recruiting area with some of his assistants and failed to get guys who are solid position coaches.
On the 2009 schedule, it's all subjective and cyclical, but who was a world-beater on there? Good teams, but maybe only one great team in Ohio State ... the Penn State game might've been winnable by the way if Brewster didn't act foolishly on the stadium walkthrough the day before, having the players chant "This is our "bleepin" house ... Joe Pa did them a favor by allowing them access to the stadium and the disrespect favor got back to the Nittany Lions.
Many examples of sophomores and redshirt fr. contributing to teams across the country ... Brewster felt the pressure heading into this season, so don't be mistaken that he put the best players on the field ... if many of those guys could've helped, they would've played.
Why do we completely dismiss the '07 class? So Theret should never be brought up in any regard?
Decker's injury hurt them, but we can't fall back on him being the only reason they finished among the worst offenses in the county, can we?

I don't know what has come over me this week, because I am normally a complete homer and absolutely love Coach Brewster, but he really is gonna have to start delivering this next season. Sooner or later he has to win a rivalry game. 0-6 against Iowa and Wisconsin really sucks. Without putting a # of the amount of wins, there is no doubt that Brewster cannot go another season not beating either Wisconsin or Iowa.

The promise of the future has to eventually become the reality of the present.

Anyone agree?

mingg -- Oh, this would be subjective as well, but Mason left more talent than you believe ... Mason left 5 win talent and Brewster turned that into 1 win ... coaching was a reason in '07 why they lost a handful of games by 7 points or less.
Do you really believe that Bruininks, after seeing the brand new beautiful stadium constructed, will continue to tolerate at times unwatchable and losing football?

Your points: Anyone hired would've done a better job recruiting than Mason ... how those players are coached up, or not coached up, is the issue

Get a grip bud, Brewster didn't coach up any talent on this year's team? Triplett, Campbell, Tow-Arnett, Decker, Wilhite, Small, Brown, Cooper, Theret, etc... So, what players were coached up and more specifically, what players weren't coached up in your OPINION since that is what your are on here for, correct?

Now, I'll wait for your inevitable reply by saying "...well that was a little over the top..." or "... maybe a bit of hyperbole..."

So, why again do you think Brewster deserves another year, cuz your writing and opinions sure don't gel with what you state on this topic?

Go Gophers!
SK Gopher

Doogie,
I am not going to take a side here as I believe you do a good job... my question to you is about PA. He is was absolutely pimping the O-coordinator this fall and had Jack Brewer on a couple times talking about the team. Then the whole KFAN deal happened and nobody from football was allowed on KFAN. Once this happened, why did PA go to an absolute Brewster hater? Just cuz the guy wont let you interview anybody from his team?

Who would disagree with any of this?

"Answer: A Brewster win in a trophy game (0-9), a bowl game (0-2), a November conference game (0-9), or a win against a ranked opponent (0-8) would be a good start. I would also would like to see better use of timeouts, less mass confusion with the offensive hand signals, and not leading the conference in penalties for a third straight year."

This is the basic point to the whole article.

So You Don't Have to Click on Strib Website

I've also added some dots (...) to make it more appropriate to the board. This may have taken things out of context. I view that as a tribute to Doogie's KFAN days!

"Rose Bowl TV analyst Kirk Herbstreit, as Ohio State pondered whether to go for it on 4th-and-1 from Oregon's 14-yard line in the first half, stated "If the Buckeyes are playing Indiana or Minnesota, they kick the field goal. I say this because (Jim) Tressel has such high respect for the Ducks offense.".......Those 15 extra bowl practices, which head coach Tim Brewster cited almost as often as he uses the word "tremendous" leading into the New Year's Eve debacle versus Iowa State, worked out well....Entering the game, the Cyclones were 99th nationally in total defense (414 yards per game) and 112th in sacks (1.17 per game). Yet, the Gophers scored a grand total of 13 points. .......I have received this question in a few different forums since the Gophers' loss: What would a successful 2010 Gophers season be to you?....Answer: A Brewster win...better use of timeouts, less mass confusion with the offensive hand signals, and not leading the conference in penalties...... In looking at their schedule, they play nine bowl-eligible teams from this season. Even with three of their four toughest conference opponents at home, it seems like five wins maximum.........Athletic director Joel Maturi, as nice an administrator as we have in this town, will have to defend the decision publicly...... Brewster deserves any sort of extension with two years remaining on his deal...."

All in all, I'd say it's a "fair and balanced" column alright!

First off, I have no idea why I am defending Doogie so much....but what is not fair?

This is reality folks.

We just lost to Iowa State in the Insight Bowl only scoring 13 points.

IOWA STATE.............13 points.

Don't forget too quickly.

It's an interesting question ... I think it's too easy to say that is all of it, but there might be some lingering feelings ... in fairness, I'm not sure PA has ever had a healthy opinion of Brewster.
Speaking of PA, I also heard him today say he has from a great source that Fisch is going to Washington with Mike S. as an assistant (QB or WR) ... PA has some good sources, so will be curious if this proves to be true.

Warning: This is advanced use case of dots in a forum post. The dialect used is only known by those who are proficient in emotes. Sometimes I am sadden that these dots are lost on the casual GopherHoler.

Someone have an e-hug for me to make me feel better?

IOWA STATE.............13 points.

Don't forget too quickly.

While we are on THAT subject, let's not forget the 9 offensive points scored against SDSU or the zero offensive points against Iowa the two games before that, either. This isn't just one game we are talking about.

Good article, Doogie and good posts on this thread. I totally see eye to eye with you and just to let you know there are many, many other fans that feel the same way.

Nebraska 7 points, correct? Your point?

Unsure of what you meant by this, but Nebraska went into their bowl game with a 9-4 record, nationally ranked, and beat a Top 20 in their bowl 33-0.

So not really sure how Nebraska got into the discusion.

When Daniels, Massey, E. J. Jones, and Dominic Jones were dismissed they lost a good chunk of the defense that was returning. Not sure Mason could have won 5 games without those players.

They scored 7 points again ISU. I get that our offense isn't the greatest, we all know that already.

Who's opinion is it that Mason left Brewster 5 win talent? Yours? Please give us your expert breakdown on all of the talent that Mason left. There was nothing there after graduation especially after Mason phoned it in the last two years in his recruiting. Throw in DJ, Massey, Daniels, and EJ getting kicked off the team (in addition to McField) and you have an absolute disaster on your hands. Lets take a quick look. The 2005 class produced a grand total of one part-time starter on this years team (Tripplet). On most solid teams the redshirt senior class should contribute MANY more starting spots. Not to mention that class was ranked 10th in the Big 10. The 2006 class (which would be seniors or RS juniors) produced a grand total of two full time starters on offense (Weber and Alford), one part-time starter on offense (Burris), two defensive starters (Campbell and Brown), and one special teams starter (Ellestad). That is a VERY weak class especially if its a class that should dominate starting positions. Oh yeah, and this class was ranked 9th in the Big 10 (that ranking was done before EJ and McField were kicked off the team; Sherrer, McWhirter, and Becker left the team; and Jamar Howard never made it into school - the top ranked recruit that year). Therefore, that class is easiest the worst class in the Big 10 for 2006. On top of that, the 2004 class was 9th ranked in the Big 10 and produced a grand total of 4 starters on that 2007 team (WVDS, Hightower, D. Barber, and Simmons). OK, so based on this, Doogie please tell us all of the talent that was left behind by Mason? since you like to base your arguments on facts, maybe it would be best if you just listed every commit from 2004 through 2006 and told us how they impacted the team.

This has been already discussed, but this would be devastating for Brewster if we have to have another coordinator next year.

This schedule is probably what he based this off of.

2007 Football Schedule and Results
DATE OPPONENT RESULT/TIME RECORD/TICKETS
September 1 Bowling Green L 32-31 0-1 (0-0)
September 8 Miami (OH) W 41-35 1-1 (0-0)

September 22 Purdue L 45-31 1-3 (0-1)
September 29 Ohio State L 30-7 1-4 (0-2)
October 6 at Indiana L 40-20 1-5 (0-3)
October 13 at Northwestern L 49-48 1-6 (0-4)
October 20 North Dakota State L 27-21 1-7 (0-4)

This has been already discussed, but this would be devastating for Brewster if we have to have another coordinator next year.

I'm probably in the minority here RaT and the numbers are certainly on your side BUT I can't help but thinking that it wouldn't be all bad.

The guy was, by all accounts, Brewster's third maybe even fourth choice. IF, and a big "if" at that, a new coordinator would keep the "Pro Style" Offense but dump the complicated "line read" system. That system seems to be the major reason for the continuing confusion of the Offense.

If JF stays, I hope he makes some changes for simplicity's sake.

I realize he was using the 2007 schedule. However, the 2004-2006 classes would be all of the "talent" left behind by Mason for 2007. I just want a detailed, factual breakdown by him of all the guys in these three classes that Doogie seems to think were enough talent to win at least 5 games.

You know I kinda got that impression that maybe Brewster always knew from the onset what Fisch intentions and ultimate goals where. That was probably his hesitation on on a hiring.

He needs more guys like Cosgrove who are content at their postion and have no aspirations for lateral positions or the NFL.

Didn't that roster include Matt Spaeth, Eric Decker, Ernie Wheelright, Dom Barber, and Willie Vandesteeg.

5 future NFL'ers.

Clearly you had no idea that Iowa State went into Nebraska and beat Nebraska 9-7. He was referring to the number of points that Nebraska scored AT HOME AGAINST IOWA STATE you MORON!!
