Sid was great because he always seemingly to me anyway, found a way to plug Trestmann.

Iā€™m a little embarrassed to admit it, but I always secretly thought Dungy might do it, if he wanted to coach again and got tired of the booth. I think he would have excelled as a college coach as well.

I bet if Sid was your friend, heā€™d give you the shirt off his back, if you asked. No wonder, he was so good at what he did.

I secretly hoped for Tony too. Donā€™t know how well you know him but he is an incredible human being.

Sure Iā€™ll go through my thought process.

First off, the thread was specific to Doc Rivers a not all NBA coaches, right?

2 - We have a coach for next season, who is not going to be fired short of a cataclysmic scandal at this point. If he sux again, Iā€™m all for his dismissal, as is everyone else in the watchful waiting ā›ŗļø, so far as I can tell. For me the anti-sucking criteria is: no Weakling Wednesday participation and the requisite 8-9 BT wins needed to achieve it.

3. The OP stated that Doc has a connection to the U - apparently being Jim Brewerā€™s nephew - pretty remote IMO. Woodson who was an NBA coach, with the Hawks and then the Knicks, after he was fired Ny the Knicks, he spent the next 7 years as an NBA coach - likely wasnā€™t getting another chance at that gig. He is a native of Indianapolis and was a star Hoosier player and an alumnus of Indiana - much di than having an uncle sho played at the U 50 years ago.

Shrewsberry was an NBA assistant for the Celtics and all the rest of his time was as a college assistant coach, including his last job at Purdue, before getting the gig at PSU - his first as a HC.

Docā€™s salary at the Sixers was $8M at Philly and won an NBA championship as an HC, none of the coaches you mentioned have that pedigree.

Former Gopher J.B. Bickerstaff was mentioned as a possibility on here by posters, but all his coaching experience has been in the NBA and heā€™s the head of the Cavs now and was signed to an extension thr the 26-27 season. His dad is NBA legend Bernie Bickerstaff who won 419 games in the Association and us best known for helming the Sonics; couldnā€™t find his specific numbers.

Hoiberg hasnā€™t impressed at Nebraska IMO. Itā€™s quite possible thatā€™s the best gig The Mayor could land.

I personally am unaware of a coach who has had recent success professionally ā€œleveling downā€ to college; they go down for good ala Saban and can pick a great spot. If Doc wanted to coach college, why would he go to the U?

As posited previously, heā€™ll likely be a serious candidate for Milwaukee or Phoenix; Giannis/KD > Payne.

Well, there's Eric Musselman. I've heard some around here wishing we went after him a few years ago.

I believe the majority of coaches (football and basketball) are better suited for either the NBA or college, but not both. There are rare exceptions. But a failed NBA coach could be great in college; a great NBA coach could crash and burn quickly in college.

I'd have no problem looking at fired NBA coach, but Coyle would have to determine if he can evaluate talent on his own and has the will and ability to recruit and manage 17-year-olds.

With the portal madness, Iā€™d much rather be in the pro ranks.

Iā€™d think Larry Brown is the only one who had measurable success in both levels.

If you've read any of my posts out here, you'd know I want Ben to succeed. That doesn't preclude me or others from throwing out a clearly stated "huge longshoot what if" scenario. Based on your response, it certainly touched a nerve, though.

I hope Doc winds up at TNT/TBS. He's a really good TV commentator. If he could take the reps that Grant Hill gets it would be a WIN-WIN.

The guy is 31-30 coaching a team with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard on the roster, two players on the NBA 75th anniversary all-time team. But Iā€™m sure he would regularly compete for Big Ten titles with high school and portal guys.

FWIW -

They started the season 2-8, with Giannis not at 100% and Middleton out with an injury; both are back now and theyā€™re on an 8-2 tear through their last ten, with Giannis leading the Association in scoring @ 32.7, playing at an MVP level.

Saw them beat the Hawks yesterday and Middleton is healthy again, with A.J. green shooting 47% from trey land.

I can definitely see them making the Eastern Conference Finals if the Celtics are in the other side of the draw.

I donā€™t think doc is RedAuerbach, but heā€™s not a career bum either based on on -
1928-1128 for a ,587 winning %. Bucks are his 5 team and heā€™s never had a losing season. More than respectable IMO.

They were 32-14 last year when Adrian Griffin was fired, and Doc pulled that squad to a 17-19 record the rest of the way and went one and done in the playoffs. Never been impressed by the guy.
