De'Vondre Campbell will not enter the 2015 NFL draft

Pretty sure I make more money than a players on the practice squad. So that's not tough to do. On the other hand, I'll likely never make more than the league minimum for the active roster out here in the real world.

Practice squad players make $6,300 per week. A 17 week season would net that person $107,000 for 17 weeks worth of regular season work. Are you able to say the same thing? More than $107,000 in less than five months? I highly doubt it, though it would be interesting what you have to say once you remove your foot from your mouth.

LOL - If it's that easy to make more money than I make, then I must be lazy.

This play still kills me. He literally runs out of the way of Mauk:

Nah. He's covering the RB. If he hadn't, Mauk could've thrown to the RB (who would've been wide open). There was no way at that point for Campbell to know whether Mauk was going to keep it. He was using basic defensive principles - work your way from the outside of the field in.

Color me one who has not been very impressed with him. He needs to get a nasty streak, and is often not aggressive enough to be a linebacker at the next level IMO. That being said, of course I hope he gets all that squared up and develops nicely for a breakout senior season.

He also poorly wraps up on quite a few tackles.

It's becoming an epidemic in all levels of football. I can't believe how many times I see a player just try to put a shoulder on a player and not wrap up. Now, a lot of the guys are trying to lay down a "kill shot" that looks good on their highlight reel, but I've seen it more often the past 2 years then ever before.

I could see Campbell impressing scouts at the Combine based on the the "measurables." I'm not saying he's going to be a star, but if a team thinks he fits their system, I could see some team picking him up as a late-round draft, or more likely an un-drafted free agent, and trying to develop him on the practice squad.

Unlike a lot of posters on here, De'Vondre is one of my favorite players and I believe he had a very good year and will be even better next year but I got a kick out of tweet. Why he even considered declaring and needed to announce this is beyond me.

The Buccaneers front office just went into panic mode. They didn't even consider a plan B. Mariota, maybe? Or do they just play it safe and settle for Leonard Williams or Randy Gregory? They can't possibly draft Jameis, can they? Who knows. It's wide open now.

I heard the Bucs are going to go Old School and draft Bo Jackson. Again.

As others have pointed out, Campbell is not physical. We all see it - does anyone think NFL scouts don't? Unless his approach/mindset takes a 180 degree turn, he'll never play in the NFL.

If he plays like he did during the Big Ten season this year, I don't even want him starting next year. In fact, I don't even want him playing LB. I'd rather he be a situational pass rusher (ridiculously bad angles and all) - that's it.

He is the best LB on our roster.

By best do you just mean most experienced? By mid season next year I would expect both Jack Lynn and Cody Poock will be considered better than campbell. But maybe that's just me. Poock looked real good until he got hurt and Kill has been very very high on him.

Does he actually have a shot? He was brutal in the Mizzou game and was average at best all season.

That's a good point UU. Derrick Wells was also guilty of that a few times this year.

Always tough to predict who will make it in the NFL and who won't. You look at a guy like Marcus Sherels and nothing about him in college said he would have a shot in the pros but he has had a very nice career. So as to whether or not Campbell will make it there really is no way to know but he would have been crazy to declare for the draft after this season because I highly doubt he would have been drafted.

No. Campbell is a better open field tackler, better in outside run support and forcing the guy back inwards, better in pursuit, better pass rusher and is better in coverage than those two IMO. The guy had 75 tackles this year, nearly 20 more than Lynn. And I believe he will make a bigger jump in improvement than Lynn too. Some of you don't realize how much better he got from two years ago to this year, and the guy still has nowhere to go but up. If Poock is healthy, I'll expect him to be about the same as Lynn next year as he was starting over him before the injury but I don't expect either to be as good as Campbell.

I regret starting this thread.

We've been watching two different players. I'm with you on pursuit, coverage and pass rushing. Tackling, run support, holding the edge, are all weaknesses of his. There's a reason he lost a lot of playing time to the true Freshman Jonathan Celestin. In fact, I believe Celestin replaced Campbell as the starter for a game or two when he was particularly bad and Kill wanted to send him a message?

Maybe it was just bad timing after he had such a poor bowl game performance. And I don't remember him doing much in the winsconsin game either. So he was basically a dud for the two biggest games of the year...

Watch a 3rd down in the NFL. You'll see several guys on both sides of the ball come in as specialists. Just as there area 3rd down RB's and pass-catching TE's for passing downs, there are also 3rd down LB's now who specialize in covering TE's and RB's. I could see Campbell doing well in this role at the NFL level. The NFL is all about raw athletic ability and measurables, which Campbell has.

Didn't Celestin actually get the start against Wisconsin?

Campbell definitely had a rough bowl game, but he is a freak specimen. He's basically MarQueis Gray playing LB. He has a ways to go at LB, but with his ability, I'd bet he'd get a chance at the NFL level, at least as an undrafted FA. Some team will think they can take that size/athletic ability and turn him into a player, even if it takes some time on the practice squad.

This is a fantastic comparison imo.

Idk. I was at the game and haven't had the nutz to re-watch my recording yet. I only remember campbell making one tackle so you are probably right.

I mean I'm not saying he may not be NFL material because he is a freak of nature and could put up some ridiculous combine numbers and get picked up somewhere. I'm just saying I don't think he is even our best linebacker left on the roster. But in that statement I'm taking potential into consideration too I guess.

He's an impressive athlete for sure. While I wasn't all that impressed with him this year, we need to remember it was his first year playing at 240 pounds. It takes some getting used to playing physical and using leverage in the run game. Before this year Campbell was a situational player because he was so light. If he's serious about the NFL he'll work his butt off this offseason to become a more well-rounded LB and if he puts his trust in our coaches I think they can develop him into an NFL player.

I didn't say run support or tackling period. I said outside run support and open field tackling. I agree that Lynn is better at inside run support and holding the edge. He has shown a couple flashes of ability breakdown one on one in the open field, square up and make the tackle. I don't know if you have replay access to the games but two times that stand out are at 13:26 in the third against Wisconsin this year. He was pretty much completely one on one with Gordon in the flats and no player was within 5 yards of either of them and he forced him 3 yards back for a loss. At 11:55 in the first against Wisconsin is another good example. Pretty much the exact same play as before except it was against James White, arguably the best player laterally in the Big Ten that year. In the third quarter against Mizzou it was third and 7 I believe, Mauk took running off on the outside and Campbell was able to accelerate across the field and stop him one yard shot. Those are plays that I just don't know if Lynn would be able to make.

Probably. I don't remember this attitude about Campbell before the last two games. I wonder if Wilson would be getting similar types of comments if he had ended his career with his performance against OSU. That mistake right there by Wilson is just as bad if not worse than anything Campbell has done this year IMO. Prime culprit for the 86 yarder.
